America was dealing with more important issues in the autumn of 1974. The fallout from the Watergate scandal, ending the Vietnam War, Some parents were worried about their kids joining cults and many drivers at the time had a difficult time trying to get gas for their cars and heating their homes because of the gas shortages due to the energy crisis. I doubt Hong Kong. Phooey's "racism" was not on the priority list of things to worry about. Here is a little common sense for you. Do you really think that Iwao Takamoto who happened to be the creative consultant for the cartoon would work on it if he thought the show was racist to the Asian community? Get real, Takamoto was a Japanese-American who grew in a Japanese Internment Camp during World War II. If putting people in the camps because of their ethnicity was not racist, I don't know what is.

so sub consciously influencing black children see themselves as a inferior servant class wasn't something America was concerned with. Thanks for enlightening me on the relative importance of black culture . Since something terrible happened to Japanese people I shouldn't care about what happened to my own. Their experience was clearly far worse and black people need to put Japanese tragedy ahead of their own. You are so insightful

The only thing offensive about Hong Kong Phooey was his ability to move through each drawer of the file cabinet!😂 I wanted to do that!😂Every time I see a file cabinet at work, I think of that! 😂

True. It doesn't have to be racist. Sometimes it can be sexist, homophobic, ableist, or any combination of those. People saying it's gotta be racist aren't seeing the big picture. Thanks for pointing this out.

I respect your opinion, though in my personal opinion, I’ve always found Hong Kong Phooey to be a truly great character, and a joy to watch over the years. I can safely say that the great minds at Hanna-Barbera didn’t have the intention for the character to appear offensively. I’ve always thought that Scatman Crothers brought life to the character in a way that no one else could, and not in a way that was racist.

In this case, if you look for racism in cartoons, you'll find it. Even though it's not there. Racism usually means that there is some level of malice. These cartoons are innocent and fun for kids. They should not have to think about issues like that yet. They will soon enough.

Yes but we have to acknowledge that some times these things were done with malice. And the subtle subconscious messages were very dangerous and often effective.

@@9KreatorUniverse Hong Kong Phooey is a 47-year-old cartoon Also, you're overanalyzing it. Even if it was racist, which I doubt, there is not much we can do, and we should not try to pull the DVD's out of commission on Amazon I liked the cartoon, and I don't like it when people try to decide what I can watch and what I can't. I don't like it when other people impose their views on me. I like to make those decisions for myself.

Why is Hong Kong Phooey racist? Is it because Scatman Crothers voiced him and not an Asian-American actor? If that's the case, wouldn't that be the very definition of racism? Scatman Crothers could not voice the character simply because he was black and not of Asian decent.

Hong Kong Phooey is black not Asian. Just because a character does martial arts doesn't automatically mean they are Asian, as there are plenty of non-Asians who also do martial arts.

I was looking for old Scooby-Doo rip-offs, as I grew up with a lot of them; Speed Buggy, Funky Phantom, The Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan (surprisingly not all that racist, but some aspects haven't aged the best). And then I discovered this show... Rickety Rocket... As soon as I saw his face I was thinking "oh, HELL NO!" The sad part is the fact that I could see myself watching this as a kid and enjoying it, completely oblivious to the stereotypes that is in it. This conversation made me laugh though! It almost seems like you got war style flashbacks just by hearing its name! Take care!

Two men of TODAY applying standards and views of TODAY to shows from over 40 years ago. What makes them think it’s remotely appropriate for them to cast judgement like that? Do they think THEY know better than (black) actors like Scatman, Johnny Brown, and Al Fann? Were these actors just racist themselves? Were they unfamiliar with what racism is? Maybe THEY never experienced racism and don’t see it when it’s right in front of them... could that be it? Or, do you agree that you cannot use opinions of today to judge things from the past?

Two men who grew up watching these shows and being influenced by them. I had an opinion when I was 8, 28, and 48. They have evolved over time. And yes I think its okay to judge them by todays standards. if we didn't we could never talk about anything. Racism was bad 40 years ago just as it is today and for those messages and images to be targeted as children is particularly vile. You're going to really hate my take on the Dukes of Hazzard.

People liked him , and he sounds like he was a decent person. Don't be so critical of people. No one person is responsible for an entire population of people who share that person's ethnicity.
