I originally thought PC Music was trying to satirize pop by exaggerating its artificial and generic nature and repetitive, shallow lyrical themes. The more I listen, the less I'm sure. There were several moments during this where shit took a turn I wasn't expecting at all. There aren't many acts out there with this particular sound that I know of. This is like that mass-produced club dreck we all know and at least passively dislike deconstructed and put back together wrong in the best way. Something about the minimalism of it makes it both inhuman but also strangely intimate, particularly in the context of the abundance of softer sounds that arguably tend more towards ambient than punchy. There's a beat at times, others not. The lyrical themes are very approachable and basic vague references to relationship drama that are not unfamiliar, but are refreshingly innocent. I have no idea whether PC Music intended to poke fun at pop/club music, or only take a separate approach to it, but I think the result falls in the latter camp and ends up being much better than the original style in the weirdest fucking way.

Sorry to kind of necro this, but you’re definitely right. A lot of PC music-especially things A.G and Hannah write together like this-seems to be about somehow creating an emotional connection out of a bunch of cold bright plastic parts and meaningless diary entry lyrics. When SOPHIE was making CGI waterslide songs she wasn’t technically under PC music but the song Just Like We Never Said Goodbye is really intensely this-it’s had every bit of life sucked out of it but, to me at least, it’s really... powerful in a way I don’t quite understand.

Maybe you overthink this too much. Music is (most of the time) produced to be enjoyed. Producers just do what comes to their minds, and since they're artists, it can get weird at parts. As the audience, you either like it or not. That's the whole point of any genre of music, if you ask me. When it comes to pc music, I think it's funny how many people seem to question their taste in music, because they oddly enjoy it. Don't be embarrassed, don't look for an excuse or a deeper meaning, just go on and be proud about your favourite music, no matter how strange it is :)

I think there were elements of satire earlier on. QT, the live shows, and the first compilation album. Now the PC artists have evolved past the irony and demonstrated that they’re quality producers capable of making great music. (GFOTY is the last artist on the label making vaguely satirical stuff.)

A. G. Cook has said multiple times that he truly loves pop music and considering at all the things he has made, the artists he has produced for etc. I have absolutely no doubts about it. The presence of some satirical & ironic elements in some of the tracks does not really imply that they were made for ironic or satirical reasons - after all they are after all great songs with their own quirks and passion put into them. I don't think satire was ever a goal of PC Music (they would be dead long ago, if that was the case), but it may have been one of the artistic means they used as a part of their music.
