Yes, and so many climate activists draw a false dichotomy between corporate responsibility and personal responsibility. They are by no means mutually exclusive. If we are to save ourselves and the other lives on this planet, we must view each of our options through both lenses before making any decision, whether as consumers or voters

The only way pressure will be put onto corporations to change is by not supporting them. But the argument here is that we should just continue to support them because they haven't changed yet? What kind of sense does that make? There is absolutely zero logical rationale in that excuse. BE the change you want to see.

Food is powerful & impowering. How often do we have a choice in front of us that is consequences for the most pressing issues that our species face: environmental collapse, antibiotic resistance, pandemic causing infectious diseases and the biggest driver of animal exploration and suffering caused by humans. Our food choices present us with an opportunity to take a stand against all of these issues and many more.

Hannah Einbinder: "It's super important to go vegan" Hannah Einbinder: "I no longer am vegan" So she thought it was important to be vegan for health, environmental, and/or ethical reasons, and now she is happy to delegate those decisions to major corporations. When did Hannah stop believing in personal responsibility? If Hannah thinks "it's super important to go vegan" and that "the pressure needs to be put on corporations who do a lot of the damage to our environment," if everyone abdicates responsibility and doesn't acknowledge the environmental damage they do by consuming meat and dairy, where does she think the pressure comes from?

People cheering for eating animals/essentially the exploitation of animals is wild. Also, you can say we should hold corporations/100 companies accountable for 71% of global emissions, but if you're taking the individual impact out of this equation, you're not really helping the problem. Consumers have a lot of impact on the choices of companies. The more meat you consume/buy, the more demand there will be. So that logic is completely flawed 🤔

🤷‍♂Well, sure. You keep reading and reading and reading about how _bad_ things are and how they keep getting worse, you're gonna deal with _depression._ How about, on the other hand, you start doing research into what the environmentally conscious of us can do to _help_ things, though? Consider an unlikely source. In 2005, a book called _The Undercover Economist_ was published. In it, the author, a man named Tim Harford, related _extensive_ information, including an anecdote in which he and his wife went to a symposium, and on their way inside, someone with a clipboard asked them how they traveled there. Tim asked why the man wanted to know. He explained that they were planning to offset the carbon footprint of all those at the symposium by planting the appropriate number of trees. So Tim said that they had traveled there by anthracite-powered steamer and then his wife elbowed him in the ribs. They had, in fact, gone to the symposium on their bikes. Bicycles are a very environmentally _friendly_ way to travel, while anthracite is about the most environmentally _unfriendly_ fuel source that humanity has ever _discovered._ So why had Tim said that they had traveled there by anthracite-powered steamer? Because being carbon-neutral _would_ be worthwhile if you could get _everyone_ on board with it. Until we manage that, the environmentally conscious are better advised to focus on being carbon _optimal._ Don't be content just to remove from the atmosphere an amount of carbon _equal_ to what you put into circulation. Strive to remove all the carbon from the atmosphere that you _can._

@@brandonmccall7803 these days our economy is so globalized and monopolized we dont have much of a choice of whether or not we "support" the the large corporations that are polluting the planet. its nearly impossible to do anything without the big polluters being involved, let alone organize a meaningful boycott... @@clarabirch123 she said she went vegan. Veganism is a moral philosophy against the commodification of animals. It’s not an environmental movement. @clarabirch123
@clarabirch123 7 ай бұрын
@@brandonmccall7803She mentioned the environment so I think that's why she went vegan. Going vegan is a good thing that individuals can choose to do, but if we're talking just about environmental impacts, imposing regulations to stop corporate pollution would have a much bigger impact than any one person changing their diet. I'm not trying to invalidate the impact of going vegan; this is just the argument Hannah provided, that corporate reponsibility has a bigger impact overall than individual choices, and some people choose to focus their energy on the former instead of the latter.
@brandonmccall7803

@@clarabirch123 she didn’t mention the environment, Colbert did. She said she went vegan after watching What the Health which is a documentary that focuses mainly on the health benefits of a plant based diet. No doubt corporations need to be held responsible for the harm they cause to the environment. But without our boycotting corporations that kill animals corporations are going to continue to destroy the environment. I believe it’s something like 80% of land resources are being used for animal agriculture. Many crops are grown to feed the 70 billion animals raised for livestock. That is also where a large amount of fresh water is going to, rainfall that livestock. Plus climate change is being effected by all of the methane in the air. But if we go back to what veganism is it’s not environmental or for health. Veganism is anti animal exploitation because we recognize animals as sentient beings that have the ability to experience pain and suffering. We believe animals are here with us, not for us.

Hannah's right, of course. Personal responsibility is a drop compared to what corporations create in environmental destruction. What we need are politicians who are courageous enough to stand up to corporate lobbyists and who have the integrity to refuse kick backs from corporations. That would bring about the change future generations need to live on this planet.

And how do you get what you propose without individual action? How do you expect others to do something if you can’t even do your own part? These corporations are powerful because of the demand for their products. Obviously individual action will not solve all the problems, but you can’t have systemic action without individual action.

@@vishalfenn6827 I thought I made myself clear when I said our personal habits are a mere drop in the bucket. I did not say we should do away with personal responsibility and leave it to politicians. Yes, more people should be ditching their cars for mass transit, assuming it exists in their area. Sure, shopping big box stores is adding to the problem, but when that's all that's available in your town, you have no real choice. We are, for the most part, at the mercy of our legislators being conscientious, thinking about future generations, but if they're kowtowing to lobbyists, and many of them are, our meager acts of recycling or what have you, are not going to make major impacts on our climate improvements. Big changes require big solutions, and that's beyond an individual lifestyle.

To be clear, there is no such thing as ‘former vegan’. Anyone who abandons a plant based diet was never vegan in the first place.

@@Tao_Tology Veganism is only about avoiding harming and exploiting animals so even if you have troubles, you still stick to that as much as possible. If you can't eat vegan for whatever reason, you can stil refuse to wear leather, for example. Hannah was talking about the environmental benefits of veganism (which are many, by the way) not the animals so it seems like she was plant based for the environment not vegan for the animals therefore not vegan in the first place. Another problem with her capitulation is that she's dodging personal responsibility. It's like saying you're going to continue to use single-use plastic because it's the government's responsibility to deal with the problem. Quite lame, really. @@weirdunclebob Moving on..... Someone really can follow/adopt/hold/etc veganism and then, at a later point in their life, .......not follow/adopt/hold/etc them. Again it is utter nonsense to say that the former state "never happened" (although it is 1000% in line with the stereotype 😏).

Her stance on unethical corporations versus personal responsibility is embarrassing, lazy, and illogical. Of course she gets an ovation, because why try to do what’s right if we can all do what’s easy and blame someone else. Sickening.
