This was a bit surreal seeing you react to a home news story. The current theory here in NZ is that he has some outside help maybe people dropping him supplies. The crazy thing is that this is not the first time he has gone bush with the kids he did it when they were even younger for a period of months. You asked how the one doing the filming knew it was them. This has been a very high profile news story in NZ and also probably even more so in the area they are in, so he was aware of who it was likely to be.
