She barely moves a muscle. She doesn't rise, she doesn't gesture. She just sits there and delivers the song. It's so restrained. It makes the occasional tilt of her head more meaningful and very line land exactly as it should.

I watched this live and it was genuinely the greatest performance of a song I have seen on stage. Im so glad to find a recording again and realise it's as good as it is in my memory.

Hannah Waddingham...One of the most outstanding singing and acting talents of today - and added to that - a beautiful and kind person!

Amazing how many years I’ve been repeating this video, and now she’s EMMY AWARD WINNER Hannah Waddingham

I was lucky enough to been seated in the second row of the Shubert Theatre in 1973, watching tears streaming down Glynis Johns' face. I've seen Sally Ann Howes, Catherine Zeta Jones and Juliet Stevenson play Desiree too. While no one will ever top the great Glynis, for whom Send in the Clowns was written, I would pay a whole lot of money to see HW in a full production.

Hannah Waddingham, exquisite here as she is in everything she does. A wonderful actress and singer.

This is the perfect combination of the 'Angry' Judy Dench portrayal and the pitch perfect Sally Anne Howes rendition.

Honesty cannot watch this without crying. Each time. It’s so well done. Hannah Waddingham conveys the emotions Desiree is going through so perfectly. What I would give to have seen this in person.

Sondheim himself said “you moved me greatly” after hearing her sing this song

This Lady is Magical. I heard a snippet of her singing "The best is yet to come" and I almost died. She has a Gift only given to a few.

Superb rendition. Even the notoriously awkward "next year" conclusion (the accenting of which Sondheim often apologises for) is expertly judged. Bravo, Hannah! Oh, how I wish this production were available on DVD!

I've got just one question: where has this come from? And is there more than this?
So, an actress who sings, not the usual actress who doesn't.
@BruceN8812 жыл бұрын
this version is a little too fast for me. I understand the movement through the song as though it were speech. I also understand that this song was written for a non-singer so those actresses that take their time and sing it are always judged. I just wanted to see a little more from her because I know she can do it. I'm not saying it is bad, I just wonder if a different direction could be taken.

I was fortunate enough to see this performance at the Meunir Chocolate Factory in London and this version of the song is without any doubt, the very best I have ever heard. She enters the character 100%; that of an older, now disilusioned women, who has loved and lost. Those who sing this song without understanding the character, fail, simply because they sing without knowledge. Supreme examples of this are Frank Sinatra who confessed he had no idea what it is about, Joni Mitchell who sings it as a dirge and Barbara Steisland who emotes too much.
