in this case no, there is nothing special in the production, only a piano with a simple melody like Imagine by John Lennon/ Oasis and the orchestra part in the production is from other 2 producers not Finneas .. it’s the Billie voice everything. Even if she sings corny lyrics people will still cry the same. Trust me. It’s the way she sings ballads the real magic.

so a lil origin story here for the song, Finneas was the one who suggested writing a number for the film, at first Billie didn't want to write a song for the Barbie movie cause she didn't think they could top what they did for "No Time To Die" and then Finneas just sat down and started playing some melodies, and then the famous opening line came to her and then it was full speed ahead.

I think this song also does a wonderful job of summing up those feelings of worthlessness and uncertainty about being a teenager. I don’t know what I want to do, there’s so much I want to do but in the end, I don’t know if I’m doing a lot of it for the sake of other people or myself. I’m so insecure I hide so much of who I am from my friends (“Looked so alive, turns out I’m not real”), it’s like the real me isn’t real to them because I’m showing a completely different person to them, and it’s my fault because I’m the one hiding it. I don’t know what my talents are, and I’m uncertain about my future. Whenever I’m listening to this in order to relate it to myself, I substitute the line “don’t tell my boyfriend” with “don’t tell all my friends”. It suddenly becomes 100x more heart wrenching because I want to get out how I’m feeling so badly, yet I don’t want anyone around me to worry or feel stressed because of me. The lines that probably hit the most are “When did it end? All the enjoyment. I’m sad again, don’t tell my boyfriend”. I already explained the last one above, and the lines that precede it just make it even more meaningful. It’s like that nostalgia I have for when I was younger and not so insecure and afraid. I don’t know whether this is all just a phase or something more, but what I do know is that someday I’ll find who I am. Whether it’s tomorrow or years ahead, someday. And I still have hope, cause at the same time I love being a teenager. Being better at things I previously was absolute shit at before, being more self aware of my mistakes and being able to correct them, etc. It’s a love hate relationship. And to anyone out there feeling the same way, regardless of your age, background, color, gender or whatever (S.L.U.T reference teehee), I hope you’ll find something to continue living for. And I’m so glad to be alive in a time where Billie exists, and much more. Without music, I’d probably be dead by now. ❤

This is the most beautiful and heart breaking song I've heard in a very long time. And Billie Eilish is an incredible singer. As you pointed out, she knows when less is more. And, at 73, I'm not even the intended audience for Billie or this song. But man, she just has such superb control of her instrument! I bow before her!

I've been listening to this song all day on repeat. I've just been feeling very depressed lately and this just hit so many spots for me.. I ended up crying for like an hour straight while listening to it. Hannah, when you commented about how strongly that you feel music strongly, I could not relate more and made me tear up knowing that someone else that is out there like me. Thank you for sharing that about yourself.

This song really touched me and makes me cry every time I hear it. In Dec 99 at 23 , I was diagnosed with a genetic disorder that causes the kidneys, liver, ovaries and sometimes the heart to have valve defects, brain aneurysms to develop and intestines to develop diverticulitis. I had been an extremely healthy athlete and loved my job as a Pediatric Trauma RN. The disease had no treatment or cure. Over the next 10 years, I rapidly became sicker and sicker with my kidneys growing to over 10 lbs each with cystic tumors. I was having surgeries every 6 months and my quality of life just kept dropping and dropping despite changing to a less stressful job as a Neonatal ICU RN which just filled my days with joy. This song takes me back to how I felt before my diagnosis, happy and full of excitement for the future. Then as I became sicker, I lost my purpose as I became too I to work. It had known since I was 10 I wanted to be a Pediatruc/neonatal RN. The many friends I had before my illness took over my life moved on with their lives, having children and enjoying their jobs. I became sick in his perpetual limbo as my crashing kidney, liver and hart function slowed down once I was home unable to work. They moved on with lives and I became extremely isolated. COVID was absolutely horrible because I live in AL and had just been placed on the UNOS Kidney Transplant Registry. Only about 25% of the people here vaccinate and /would wear masks and follow protocols. So I myDrs confined me to my home and I was inky allowed out for Dr appt and hospital stays. I’m still on the list and had found a donor in my brother but the Drs found he has terminal brain cancer during his testing. So it was another tragedy on tragedy. It makes me feel like all my happiness and purpose in life had been stolen and I just ache for those days of when I was happy before it all happened. I know things will eventually work out but watching my beloved big brother deteriorate as Glioblastoma takes him away a bit more every day just breaks my heart. The Drs gave him 6-18 month prognosis. He’s 15 months in now and his tumor has already regrown (they removed most of it at his diagnosis which left him 80% blind). He’s been really zen about it all but it’s been really hard for me to accept. He’s just glad Mum and I will be there with him through it all and he knows we won’t let him die alone. So this song feels like it was written for me even though it was for a fictional character Barbie. It’s really shows Billie and Phineas talent to be able to make such a short, situation specific song feel like she’s she singing about my heartbreak. I guess that’s one of the amazing things about music and all the arts, they touch us all in so many ways.

Loved your reaction! I saw a video of her singing the track live and it truly was stunning. I think some people confuse singing lightly as she does as lacking power, but it takes so much control to sustain those notes and stay on key. She and her brother Finneas are musical geniuses in my opinion. ^_^

Loved your heartfelt reaction. This song gets to me like "The 30th" did. I don't know if you've seen Billie's take on "Fever" she did for a Peggy Lee tribute buy I think you would love it. I think Billie's voice was made for jazz and she killed that song.
