It's a nice story but she definitely did not run for over 20 hours every week for 6 months. I'm sure she did do it regularly, and it definitely helps with stamina and breath control, but that would end up being a minimum of several marathons A WEEK , and as someone that used to do the equivalent of one per week, it would utterly annihilate her joints not to mention risk triggering an ED relapse as the amount of food you'd need to eat to work out that much - as i said, I used to run like 50k per week and even keeping up the calories for that was hard. I definitely had much more power and control over my voice though!

I'm a Swiftie and have been for a long time. In my uneducated opinion, she forces her upper range too much because that's more "poppy." Devloping her lower range and leaning into it is where she really shines.
@littlelove13 Жыл бұрын
I half agree with you here. Of course I’m no vocal coach expert however I am an aspiring musical theatre performer and hope to one day be on the west end, so I have pretty good knowledge about how to keep my own voice healthy and supported, so here I am slightly projecting onto Taylor. Taylor’s lower register is indeed beautiful and her voice is more comfortable in lower tones, however I don’t believe she forces or pushes her upper range. If it was forced, you would be able to tell as it would strain her voice beyond repair due to how often she would be straining it. She has learned how to support her voice when hitting notes which perhaps aren’t where her voice comfortably sits, and she’s extended her range from there. Her upper vocal register is very strong, supported, and holds the passion and emotion that her more lower range songs with typically more emotional value have, so she’s not just singing a pop song but she’s taking each note in
@jenrenby Жыл бұрын

I’m so thrilled to see this reaction from you!! As a classically trained choral singer and life long Swiftie, it’s like you were reading my mind lol I think one reason I’ve always been a Swiftie is because I’ve related to her since day one and that has never stopped. I’m a soprano but my actual belting range is fairly limited. And I know I have a good voice - I have the experience and accolades to show for it - but people who don’t sing OR people who are gifted with a naturally effortless vocal range don’t understand that it takes so much time and focus to know how to do those things correctly in a way that sounds good and doesn’t hurt your voice. I also have a multitude of anxiety and depressive disorders that radically affect the way I sound when I know I’m being listened to. It causes shortness of breath and a lack of control in my vocal cords and it’s so difficult to sound the way you know you can when it feels like your body is suddenly attacking you. Nerves can have the most profound physical effects on the body. Taylor has an incredible range, but I think she has a natural alto register that fits her really well and with training she’s been able to find a chest voice that works for her. But let’s face it, the pop industry doesn’t exactly treasure those low beautiful notes the way they praise the high belting. So much of that has come from industry influence - Beyoncé, Mariah Cary, Celine Dion - all huge artists who are widely praised as being the greatest singers because they have an incredibly ability to reach notes many cannot. And because they are high they are powerful. I think part of why Taylor has always strained her voice is because of the pressure to keep up with other pop artists to always have those powerhouse style high notes and song climaxes that knock peoples socks off. But the fact is that it’s not realistic to expect that from someone who doesn’t have a natural voice that can do that. She has become what she is today because she has started leaning into her lower register more and she has discovered how she can healthily sing the high notes when she needs to. People forget that you don’t have to belt like Beyoncé or have whistle notes like Mariah to be a “good singer”. Those who know nothing about singing use that sort of artist as a standard - like they have developed a criteria. But that’s just not realistic. Nobody is claiming Taylor is the greatest vocalist to ever walk the earth lol, especially not Taylor herself. But disregarding someone because you don’t think they’d get the golden buzzer on Americas got talent is such a narrow way to look at the world of art and music.

Love this! Just want to note, maybe it has already been mentioned, but around 2011-2014 or so, Taylor had a progressing ED that made her feel faint on stage. She mentions this in her special Miss Americana. That is why, for a few years there, you can see her taking a lot of big breaths for belting notes that didn't need them or sounding/looking nervous or off. So glad she's recovered now and looking, feeling, and performing even more amazingly than before.

Your analysis was so thoughtful, and it’s wonderful to hear someone willing to go beyond just “yes, this moment was good” or “no, this was bad” and give balanced commentary on possible reasons why or how a performance might be better or worse in that moment. More than that, it’s always great seeing someone open and understanding of the fact that people grow. Too much of the criticism of Taylor’s vocal ability is based on years-old performances, from when she was still a teenager or in her early twenties, and comes from people unwilling to recognize the work she’s put in and the growth she’s experienced since those times. If those same critics would judge her ability now on the performances she’s giving now, I honestly believe we could finally put to bed the rampant idea that Taylor can’t sing live. Again, love this, really great video!

This is not Taylor Swift related but what you said about girls' voices changing and growing tired due to puberty - I wish someone had told me that when I was 15! I had a sore throat for about 9 months and no one could tell me what the issue was! I went to doctors and specialists and even talked to my singing teacher - it was so frustrating but nice to finally have an answer XD

Oh mine too! I don't think that's talked about near enough like it should.

I've never heard someone say that before. I was in choir and vocal lessons my whole childhood but then around age 13 my range changed so much and my voice got tired so quickly that I just gave up singing in any context except alone at home. I always assumed I must have hurt myself somehow.

14:38 taylor came out in her documentary, Miss Americana, that she struggled with an eating disorder and not eating, and that was very likely causing her to get breathy and need to like fully gear up for higher notes.

Brava Hannah!! Such wonderful and insightful vocal analysis. I'm not a taylor swift fan and as a singer myself, I often get frustrated when people try to critique her vocally because they either just sing praises because they don't want to upset her fans or they are just ruthless without being constructive. You've toed the line of being constructive but kind so wonderfully in this reaction video and you also are teaching new singers great techniques and habits that they can do. Absolutely great video!

What a lovely review, Hannah. It would be interesting to hear you compare one of her original recordings (say on Fearless) with her Taylor’s Version of the same song, especially since the time span is so vast. I’m a Born Again Swiftie too (and budding vocalist - at the age of 58). I had never heard any of her music before 2022. I LOVE HER!

Thank you for doing this! You were spot on when you said she wasn’t feeling her best. From around 2014-2016 she was struggling with an eating disorder unfortunately. She’s much healthier and happier now, which we all love to hear!

If you haven’t listened to Evermore, you definitely should! It’s my fav Taylor album with my favourite songs being ‘Ivy’ (all the sapphics love ivy) and ‘Cowboy like me’ :)

Cowboy like me is so amazing, I can't get sick of it

Ivy isn't a sapphic song and everyone enjoys it
@-itserinaye-65884 ай бұрын
just because YOU don’t think it’s a sapphic song doesn’t mean it isn’t to ME. the lover’s pronouns are never specified and the song deals with themes of forbidden love, adultery and not loving your partner that sounds like you were forced to marry, which is reminiscent of what many queer people experienced in the past. plus it’s also heavily theorised to be about emily dickinson and her love affair with her brothers wife, sue 🤘🤘
@Dancemoms2084 ай бұрын
@@-itserinaye-6588 that's not how it works you can apply whatever bits of the songs to fit you but that doesn't change the actual song. I'm literally sapphic that doesn't mean I'm gonna try change a song just because I want to.

I’m a more recent Swiftie, too. I listened to a handful of her songs when she first started making music, but so many people around me didn’t like her, so I just didn’t listen to her music. And then folklore/evermore came out and I was hooked. I’ve gone back and listened to all her music now. I feel weird calling myself a Swiftie because I’m not a Swiftie to the level of devotion as some other people, but I do really enjoy her music.

I really enjoyed this commentary. It was so nice to hear this technical analysis and understand her evolution as a vocalist, which is something we don't always get to see when it comes to singers in the public eye. It's also really enjoyable to hear yiu giving the exact same advice and explanations my own singing teacher has given to me over the last 18 months, and I can attest it really does make all the difference to remove all the tension in your body, and improve your placement.

i'd HIGHLY recommend the miss americana documentary to every "new" swiftie. that doc gave me such a better perspective on her live performances, especially from around 2012 to 2014. at the time, she was suffering from ED and, later, said she felt weak and like she would pass out on stage. that's another reason for why now, being healthy on top of being an adult with a developed voice, she KILLS IT on stage. she owns it. not only her music, but her voice and own body.

Love this reaction! I'm a huge Swiftie. Didn't read through all the comments, but yes, Paul Sidoti, her guitarist, has been with her since 2007! I've been obsessed with her low notes for years. I only had a small audience of about 30 and still had the jitters from adrenaline and nerves, but managed to enjoy myself. Taylor’s vocal evolution is amazing!! She was always good but she was inconsistent I guess when she was younger in her pitch and stuff but she’s so consistent now. I feel like she’s found where her voice shines and is comfortable and she sounds great. I don’t think her voice has incredible harmonics as other vocalists do but it’s still so good live and that’s awesome. I just saw her on the eras tour live and she was soooo good
