@@saram3156 I'm a retired investment manager. When my son was in high school he played sax. He was pretty good, and he got to the point he needed a better instrument. What his teacher recommended was pricey, and he said something about it being an investment. I said no, we're not buying a sax to be an investment. We're buying one to have a good sound. Same with clothing. It's not an investment unless you're buying it specifically expecting it to go up in price, AND you're going to sell it.

The earrings principle is equally true of eyeglasses, if you wear them. I spend BONKERS amounts on frames and lenses, because I wear them constantly -- I have to, because I can't see without them, and I only take them off at night. You can buy cheaper ones, but they break or fall apart, and a great pair of high-end frames are both jewelry and a medical necessity.

I can see without mine but due to a botched LASIK procedure will get a wicked headache if I don’t wear them (paid $4K to receive an astigmatism 🤬) I look for frames that fit my face, are light, and give me the best field of view possible. Often, I will wear the frame for several years, and get sunglasses even less frequently but it is worth it.

Yes! My last pair of glasses cost almost several times more than the most expensive item in my wardrobe, but at the time they were the lightest frames on earth, super strong, and have no screws in the construction. I am about to get a new statement pair for fun and will have them update these as well because they continue to stand the test of time despite the fact that I am quite hard on them.

As a person who does go to black tie events at least a couple times a year, it’s a place I’ve had to be thoughtful about how I spend money. If I can impart any wisdom in this area, it’s that formal separates are amazing. If you have to go to black tie events, you will get so much more life out a well-tailored floor length skirt in a timeless fabric like satin, taffeta, or tulle than a whole dress. It will pair nicely with a beautiful sweater, a sequined top, or even a crisp white dress shirt a la Caroline Herrera. A stylish and well-made skirt is not going to ride the tides of trendiness the ways full gown will. Last fall I wore my gold satin skirt with a satin camisole, gold cummerbund, and ivory blazer. Later that winter I wore that same skirt with a dolman sleeve sweater in olive for a Christmas event. Nobody that saw both knew or cared that the skirt was the same. People remember the meal, not the ingredients!

Feeling this bigly about outerwear. I live in a cold climate, but was also broke, so for years I wore a $60 coat until it fell apart. I replaced it with a $900 coat and I was astonished at how much that one item improved my life. Imagine not feeling constantly uncomfortable when outside in inclement weather!

@@Squishbiscuits Depends on where in Canada -- if you're going to Vancouver or anywhere in the Lower Mainland it's rainy and cold, but not freezing. Toronto and surroundings are cold, but it's NYC cold, aka good wool coat cold, not arctic parka. The Prairies and Quebec are both REALLY cold, and you need a parka/balaclava/snow boots.

Ditto bras, nice socks...dryers are really rough on fabric. I also don't wash delicates with things like jeans with zippers.

I feel like the one point I want to make is while good quality goods are usually expensive, expensive goods are not always good quality. The most important thing is to do your research on the brand and the item that you need before you buy. I also think there is a big jump in a lot of categories before you get to the really good quality - there isn't a huge difference between a $50 pair and a $200 pair of shoes, but there is a huge difference between a $50 pair and a $700 pair of shows. The threshold is genuinely pretty high before you get to the kind of quality that it's worth spending a lot, in my opinion.

I believe there’s another category of thing that justifies breaking your excellent guidelines: something that will allow you to participate in an activity, without which its lack might be enough to push you into sitting it out. And finding a swimsuit that allows you to leave the body drama behind for a day might - perhaps! - be enough reason to bend these sensible guidelines.

This is also one where your body makes a big difference. If you're straight sized and can wear and fit in to just about anything, then it really doesn't make sense to spend money. But if you're like me and plus size and super busty, getting something that fits is a struggle. And often involves underwire lol. And is usually pretty expensive. But I've gotten away with my single expensive fancy suit made for curvy girls for the last 5 summers. The best investment ever!

Yeah I find I'm much more likely to go swimming, hiking & to the gym now that I finally have clothes that cover everything I want with support, whilst also drying quickly. Bonus: UPF modest swimwear also makes excellent warm weather hiking gear - it made packing for my rainforest adventures a breeze!

This is a fair consideration! I'm straight sized and maybe swim a couple times per year, so even fast fashion swim suits tend to last many years. So it doesn't make much sense for me to spend tones of money. But, I do spend money like this on bras (and bralettes) as that changes my confidence and silhouettes in clothing.

But I also don't like to hang out with things I wear inside the bed outside if my bed, so...Now, lounge wear I might tempted to invest in a few nicer pieces, if my budget allows ( but I also feel good in the cheap h&m things I have...)

I bought an "heirloom quality" bedframe for the price of a small used car because in less than 10 years I had gone through two ikea wooden frames and one standard metal frame. I'll never have to buy another bed for as long as I live, and it doesn't squeak. Ever. Worth every penny.

Oh, perfect timing. I have been just explaining to my husband my rules and reasoning for starting no/low buy until end of the year. We are not having money issues, so he is curious why I would do it. He sees it as punishment. But for me it goes deeper. I noticed that I am getting faster and faster when deciding to buy something. Before, I would take weeks, even months, to decide to acquire an investment piece. Now, it is matter of days, or worst case, hours. My habits are changing and I am not ready to accept them.

I'm South Asian, so it may be slightly different, but for my wedding I bought a two-piece skirt & tunic (lehengha suit) with a dupatta (veil) that I can now reuse as a scarf in different outfits (along with both pieces matched with different items of clothing). It was expensive at the time but my bridal kameez & dupatta are neutral enough (in my preferred metallic) to be rewearable multiple times (at other weddings)!

I have a chronic health condition and my weight fluctuates from a 2 to an 8. This makes life very hard for me because I essentially have a “sick” wardrobe and a “well-ish” wardrobe. You can imagine, I suppose, how much I like spending money on my sick wardrobe, so I mostly buy cheaper, fast fashion items that I won’t feel bad about giving to goodwill when/if I find remission again. My greatest wish is that I could count on being able to fit into my clothes from year to year, mostly because it would mean I was healthy, but also because I love my clothes and it breaks my heart to get sick and have that loss on top of all the other losses. I never know if I’ll be able to get them out again. Once, it was almost a decade.

I'm sorry you're going through that. Whilst I may not understand your condition, I would rather invest in a capsule with some key pieces for each size than feel bad that I'm not at a certain weight. Like you said, it's enough stress as it is without worrying about fitting into your clothes too! I know it's not the same but I have many wrap type clothes (dress/ top/ coat), elasticated waistbands & scarves to help me through fluctuations. I also like sleeveless mid-layers because I tend to put weight on disproportionately in my arms.

So sorry about that, i hope you’re able to stay in remission. I have a chronic illness that has caused severe weight fluctuations for me as well, especially in the past 7 years. I have come to love flowy clothing a lot for that reason. I inherited a few vintage linen pants that were baggy even at my heaviest, I just adjust with the drawstring and they looked great when my weight dropped too. The same goes for kaftans, crocheted tops, kimonos, maxi skirts, oversized shirts, etc. Stretchy clothes like leggings or athleisure can accommodate quite a bit of fluctuation but not quite as much as I’ve needed, but those tend to wear out quickly anyways so by the time I had to purchase in a new size it didn’t feel like as much of a blow. Jeans are the worst, I think. I mostly had to phase them out, they’re too uncomfortable when I’m flaring anyways. I just have one pair that I bought at my heaviest but I can wear baggy like boyfriend jeans because of the fit when I’m down several sizes, though definitely not past a certain point.

Yes! I finally bought a truly waterproof jacket in lockdown, so that the weather would NEVER stop me leaving the house if I wanted to. Now, it's lasted into motherhood for me, and means I can head out with my baby every day in comfort, even if it's pouring with rain. Critical for my mental wellbeing!

I grew up solely on thrifted clothing, except for shoes. For this reason I have always balked at the prices of brand new clothes. Even now when I can afford to buy new clothing I still choose to buy mainly from the thrift store, for several reasons: the thrill of the find, the lower cost, the impact on the environment, I can pay for several pieces of clothing for the price of one brand new item, and the fact that I usually find extremely high quality and unique items for a fraction of their price if bought new. One thing I learned to do is to thrift formal gowns whenever I find a good quality piece with a classic silhouette. Although I didn’t need these items when I bought them, and they do take up space in my closet (though I only have 4 of them), I know I won’t find myself struggling to find a gown when the occasion arrives and I can avoid both the feeling of “I have nothing to wear to this event” and the urge (or need) to spend hundreds on an item that I’ll only wear for a couple of hours. I have also had friends or family borrow them, which means they get more use.

Then I got pregnant and could no longer wear that pretty “bridal” dress to our “party” wedding which is actually this coming weekend. I got another white dress for $100 that can accommodate my growing bump that is pretty but just isn’t my dream dress at all. I am getting married in a few months and trying to take that approach when buying things. I decided that I do want a white dress (tried some other dresses first but I made me realise I do actually want white more than I initially thought) so I bought a simple white evening dress on sale and will glam it up with things I will wear again, such as a nice bag, jewellery, a shawl of jacket (getting married in October). With every item apart from the dress, which I do not think I will ever wear again (I will try to dye it after but am not sure it will work), I am only considering things that work with my everyday style and needs. It’s not that easy and I have been pulled into liking some things that are not “everyday me”, attracted to the shiny 😅

Love this concept, but I would argue you left out a major category, sleep & loungewear. Maybe it's just me, but being disabled, I LIVE in my comfy clothes. Thanks to your recommendation, I currently own 5 pairs of printfresh bottoms, 3 shorts, 2 pants (all but one bought secondhand.). I spend more of my life in those clothes than anything else in my wardrobe. The same goes for sleepwear, I need something that is going to be really soft, breathable & natural fiber, so it makes sense that I just spent $75 on a secondhand PF nightgown (still had the tags attached.) I would say that investing in comfy clothes is going to help slim down my wardrobe considerably.

I live where spring/summer/fall are really warm and humid. So I mostly buy linen, and 100% cotton with a soft hand feel. I’m done with clothes that are even a little bit scratchy. ✌🏻✌🏻

I have a semi-custom pair of sandals that I wear all the time, which were like $200, probably the most I've ever spent on something I wear, but they're leather and actually fit my hard-to-size feet, so they were absolutely worth it (had them for five years now, at least). One day I'm gonna save up for custom leather pumps, not even going to consider buying off the rack for high heels.

Quick story. I was driving home from somewhere, glanced over at a bridal shop, and saw the wedding dress of my dreams. It was a lot of money for my parents, but they bought it for me, and my husband's sister also wore it for her wedding a few years later. The total cost per wear? $30. Okay, my story is not relevant, since I got married in 1973, but I thought you might get a smile out of it.

@@crisfer22 $60 was the actual cost of the dress. I was happy that my sister-in-law chose to wear it for her wedding, but it was only worn twice that I know of. It was donated years later, so perhaps a third person was able to use it, or use parts of it, in some way.

Most people spend thousands on a car that we use on average a few minutes a day. But we somehow internalised that investing in good quality bedding and sheets (we spend around one third of our life in bed) or underwear we wear next to our skin all day is decadent. This is why I like thrifting for high quality pieces (I always go with specific “holes” in my wardrobe in mind). You can see how the item has worn over time and after washes. It is less expensive and therefore less of a crime if it doesn’t fit into my wardrobe the way I wanted (fantasy self) making it easier to remove the things that aren’t serving me well. Also, I have animals. It makes it easier for me to actually wear my garments if they weren’t hundreds of dollars. I love leggings. SIL got me a pair of Vuori for Christmas. They are lovely…but I never wear them.

I lucked out. My hair stylist cuts my hair once every 2-3 months and he does a fabulous job. He precision, dry cuts my curly hair for $57.00. It grows out beautifully. I love these principles. I have a lot of in between pieces that are decades old. They are almost art pieces. They go to the theatre, the opera, the symphony, the fine dining scene and the galleries with me. I have found a few of them in thrift stores but many of them were purchased on a payment plan. I have a favourite retailer who often buys a statement piece for me and discounts it. I buy one or two pieces per year but I haven’t purchased anything for about five years now. Everything is still wearable, elegant, and a bit edgy and classic. It works very well for me. Formal clothing doesn’t really suit the city I live in or the events I attend. Be prepared to hand wash or use a gentle cycle for lingerie, knits and delicates. Buy a good laundry detergent too. Your investment pieces will wear longer and better.

I agree with all of these, with the exception of the swimsuit. Inexpensive swimwear is so unflattering and depressing. For me it has to be super well constructed (likely with underwrie), of excellent fabric, in a timeless colour, and come in DRESS SIZES, not s/m/l. Those usually run $200+ and to me it's worth every penny, even if I only wear it on vacation.

Seconded! If you have hips, butt, chest, and not a traditional magazine bod, it matters to have sturdy well constructed swimwear that can handle it. I have really liked the "tap short" bottoms from Galamar. They are $$$, but great coverage and thick, flattering materials/cuts. I have also found a nice full coverage bottom from Patagonia too that is a bit less expensive.

Yes! For me the biggest version of this are my glasses! I wear them every day and they sit on my face. I get glasses much less frequently now than I used to but I spend much more on them. I go to a specialty shop where a trained professional (can we give it up for the trained stylists??) can help me find the right size and shape for my face and then adjust the frames (for free) whenever I need an adjustment.

yes! i just bought new underwear, and while i didnt go expensive i went with 100% cotton. materials affect us! and higher prices usually equate with better materials. like... most of us are wearing PLASTIC AND GASOLINE almost everyday 😭‼️myself included! Definitely add swimwear to this list! As a former swimwear buyer for a big box store, mom, and grandma who spends her summers at the pool and on the beach, we ladies with womanly bodies need the support and coverage of well-made, quality swimwear. This is true for even occasional swimmers. A quality garment will give you comfort and confidence, and if you hand wash it and line dry it, it will last. Also, when you try on your potential purchase, try on the next size up. Remember, these are mass produced items, and it’s how the suit fits you, that’s important. I’ve always done this, and it makes a big difference. Nobody knows what size I purchased, but EVERYONE sees how I look in it, or at least those who care to notice an old lady.

I always hear that high quality items will last longer, and I do believe that is true. At the same time, I’m scared to invest in expensive shoes and clothing because I’m worried about my ability to keep them “nice.” What if I scuff the expensive shoes, or spill olive oil on the fancy pants, or get pit stains on the nice top, or get a hole in the elegant sweater? I think along with buying the more expensive item you have to learn to take care of the more expensive item. So learn how to get the stains out of a silk shirt and learn how to remove scuff marks from the shoes and learn how to mend hole. Or at the very least learn who in your city/town provides those services.

I love this concept and I would expand it to include a specific category of fringe pieces. They are part of specialty "gear" pieces that, while not used often, are key pieces that should be invested in based on the technical aspect of their construction. These pieces are very much dependent on lifestyle and geography. Similar to winter coats I am thinking rain coats, waterproof shoes, wind shells, base layers, winter sneakers or boots (a la sorrel joan of artic boots). How well these items function are usually correlated to price. I invested in a pair of north face winter sneakers and I've had them for almost 20 years. I rarely wear them but when it's below zero they are a key shoe in my wardrobe. I know they will keep my feet just as warm as boots, have tread profile to prevent slips while aslo reflecting my sytle. A rain coat that is actually waterproof with features like a hood, sealed seams, and adjustable cuffs that will keep you dry and comfortable is another example.

I’m currently making a proper trench coat (with proper couture techniques) and am in the planning stages for a long classic wool overcoat. But i also thrifted some fabric for a fun summer dress, which will be quickly made with a serger!

Oh my goodness - thank you for mentioning haircuts! We all lived through the pandemic and most of us did not have access to a good stylist during those times. In my opinion - they should have been included in the pool of 'essential workers'! I now get my hair cut by one stylist that I feel lucky to have found. I schedule my haircuts for every other month, consider her fee money well spent, and tip her like the professional she is. She is able to give me a hair style that will actually last for the full two months without looking unkempt.

This is so interesting to me because I came to the opposite conclusion during the pandemic. My hair looks fine when I cut it, especially if I tweak it in the following days. The professional cut just wasn't that much better. I do however have sensory issues and going to a hair salon is an unpleasant experience that I only managed to force myself to ensure maybe twice a year. That probably changes the equation of worth a bit.

I stopped cutting mine short because it took too much upkeep with my natural curls (wavy & curly hair tends to need a few weeks to 'settle' into a new cut). Agree on all fronts. Bed sheets and bathroom towels are 100% worth the splurge. Shampoos and personal hygiene products are worth the splurge for me for the same reason. Good socks are important. As with haircuts, it is important to take care of one’s hands and feet. If mani/pedis are in the budget, I get it. I am all in for day spas and mani pedis. My comfort in my skin and things that touch my skin are worth the splurge. Excellent advice. I have never regretted buying solid gold or silver jewelry and nearly always regret costume jewelry or plated jewelry. Lastly, splurge on a good car. Get something that is sturdy, well made, safe, and comfortable.

The fact that I got my prom dress for $100 was such a win for me, even at that age, because I knew I likely wouldn’t wear it even one more time, I could cut it short and make it more wearable but even then, it’s a formal dress; I have made plenty of moves in the wrong direction with my shopping and buying habits in the 6 years since then, but I have a limited amount of regret for those mistakes because I genuinely feel like I learned so much from them about what it feels like to make those decisions for myself and to watch my relationship with each thing play out, What stands the test of time? What are my natural inclinations and habits? What do I value in my closet and my space? I kind of feel that everyone has to go through a mildly unhinged phase of experimentation to figure themselves out, but if you’re lucky it will be done mostly theoretically with browsing and wish-listing rather than your actual money.

A hack I found was buy the “sample” or “defect” dresses- mine supposedly had a defect under like 20 layers of crinoline that I could not find after searching- and it was half price! Negative Underwear is so amazing! Their bras are my favorite, especially the sieve collection. I’ve never encountered such a mesh fabric on an under garment that actually doesn’t tear, it’s seriously like magic. And that’s not even mentioning the comfort! I also spend a bit for shower and bathing products. Nothing decompresses me as a shower or bath in the nicely scented wash or bubblebath. They don't have to be expensive, but sometimes I splurge on a treat shower gel I use once a week. It usually lasts for a few months this way.

Loved this, as always Something it made me think of was how my relationship to a "work coat" changed over time. I have a corporate job, and I used to live in a city where I commuted by public transport to the office every day. So I very much needed a good quality, smart coat (like a knee length wool trench or similar), and because of the rigours of public transport, by the end of the season it would be really worn out. I found that if I bought cheaper ones, they would be dead half-way through the season, so definitely worth buying the good quality one. So I had to have it in my budget to spend a chunky amount on a work coat every year. And because of the annual nature of the purchase, I could go for it with the statement and the trendy. Then I moved to a smaller city, and commuted by car. And so I've had the same 2 work coats (winter and summer) for 6 years. I probably could have gotten away with a much cheaper coat!

PLEASE if you have closed leather shoes, don’t wear the same pair everyday! The leather needs time to dry between wears, even if it feels dry, and damp/wet leather is pretty fragile. It’s stretchier and scratches/tears more easily, and uneven moisture levels cause cracking. Feet sweat ! And one reason leather shoes are so nice is they absorb and let through a lot of the sweat, so your feet stay dry. If you get the shoes wet, you should even wait 2 days ideally. (Don’t let them dry by a hot place, it really damages the leather. You can put news paper balls in the shoes to help the drying process, just take them out/replace them after 12 hours) This is the reason why it’s a good idea to have 3 pairs of everyday winter* shoes : a heavy rain/snow one, that is thick oiled leather or rubber or something waterproof and quite heavy duty (so if it’s pouring rain for 6 days straight it doesn’t take a significant hit) and two others that you can alternate between. Leather sandals/open shoes benefit from a bit of rest but they dry much faster and don’t absorb as much because of the open design, so having only one pair of open shoes is less of an issue. *of course it depends on the climate you live in : if you have dry winters maybe you need only two but more summer/rainy season (if you live in tropical regions) shoes instead. Bottom line : let your leather shoes dry. They will last sooooo much longer, especially if they are made from high quality, vegetable tanned leather.

Personally, I think if you only need 1 (or 2) of the item in question, you should feel okay with investing. Like 1 main pair of sunglasses, 1 main well-fitting swimsuit, 1 formal dress, 1 statement necklace, 1 purse, etc you save yourself from over shopping and you end up keeping these main pieces and getting a LOT of wear out of them. If you feel compelled by a second formal dress from a secondhand shop, yr budget (and closet) can still handle the purchase.

I made my wedding dress from a collection of vintage handkerchiefs, and I have been thinking SO MUCH about the historic practice of remaking garments out of pieces with lots of fabric. This summer I'm taking it apart to make the skirt a separate i can wear on more occasions. I wonder how thoughtful I could be in purchasing formal wear with the intention of refashioning myself in the future or having it refashioned. Def not a normal consideration, but the idea of rewearing formal wear is one i feel so committed to haha.

Great advice, "how much will I use this?" is one of the first things I will ask myself when deciding on a purchase. I realised this year the areas in my wardrobe that are lacking are shoes, outerwear and bags. I would frequently put together a cute look then "ruin" it because I needed to wear shoes, jacket and bag and while I like all of the few I had they didn't fit with all of my clothes (I am a lot more maximalist than Hannah when it comes to colours especially :)). I realised the answer to complimenting a maximalist wardrobe with a budget for only a few new items is choose "minimalist" or "classic" shapes and colors that go with everything (I know, genius, lol). Shoe problem is all but fixed now. Life is too short for shoes that hurt your feet, so good quality, sturdy leather and comfortable soles were the most important to me. My solution for bags: I have one nice leather bag that I love (polêne numero un in sandalwood, thank you HLP for introducing me to the brand!), and I realised for summer I favor something light and uncomplicated, so instead of investing in another expensive bag, I just got a fun canvas tote. They are cheap enough that I could easily get a few to switch it up, they are washable and don't take up much room, and they can still look classy if they are well maintained. My only problem now are jackets. I am too choosy with outerwear. I like cozy wool coats, can't wear those now, too warm. Literally most of the warmer weather jackets I see, instant dislike. Blazers? Hate. Trenchcoat? Nope. Workwear? too boxy... it's a problem.

Maybe you can try finding a nice leather jacket in your best neutral colour? Not too bikey and a bit classic. Goes a long way in spring and fall ( at least in our west European weather). Although tempting ( price/animals): dont get a vegan leather, they dont last. After a year the coloured top coat starts to crack at the areas where it touches the skin. ( Very obvious at the thriftstore).

I understand the principle but I also think that you can find really good budget options for a lot of the items you mentioned. For example, I’m always surprised by people thinking that places like Zara is fast fashion when those pieces can last years if looked after. With underwear I shop for M&S, an often overlooked store because it’s associated with older people but it’s precisely because of that that the underwear is always really well thought through.

Like when I watch these videos I have to be alone and in my own space because you really make me think deep about the way I interact with the spaces and things I have curated for myself and how to simplify and recognize some of the chaos that naturally occurs and accumulates around me. I love what you said about touch. The things that are with you every day. Like an extension of your soul. It so exciting to wear in your clothing. I love putting on a shirt that is worn in and stretched out in all the right places just from wearing it all the time. It’s like you have imprinted on it. I think that why we like to wear our lovers clothing from time to time. You can feel their body and there impression. There is a sense of comfort and personality. I have some lovely jackets I’ve collected over the years timeless and fit well but I never reach for them. I’m always drawn to my thrifted denim jacked I found in my home town antique store. It was a random day I was spending with my mom. It’s fits perfectly goes with everything and it’s a brand I’ve never heard of and doesn’t exist today. Just pure magic. To anyone else it’s just an old jean jacket but to me it’s home. Anyways, thanks for letting me rant. I really connect with this video and I think it’s time I go through my closet and touch everything and see what makes me feel most like me, things that up lift me and bring me confidence. Thank you!

Okay I agree about formal wear EXCEPT for a good suit if you like the style of suits. A good, new suit can function as separates and also is really amenable to tailoring (because it's not been tailored before). Suits will never go out of style and the statement pieces with them (ascotts, jewelry, blouses) can be easily changed out and gotten secondhand.

Yes to all of the 'yes to invest' list! Haircut and shoes 100%. Bras and undies - whelp, at this point comfort is paramount for me, especially for bras (since I'm a 38D with breast that really need support). For fellow broke subscribers, I've found that felina underwear ($30/5 pack all cotton) and Third Love wireless and brooks bros wireless sports bras are both affordable (especially on sale) and durable. Shoes DEFINITELY - my instep is very wide and I have to be very specific about my shoes - must have a wide toe box, if it's a high shoe it can only be a stacked platform, must be comfortable, must look cute and not orthopedic. Bonus if the lining is leather. Just a note the price point for these shoes is usually between $100-200, not more. Designer shoes, the ones in the $400+ range, are not made for my kind of feet (unless, I guess, they were custom made to my measurements). The one clothing item that I spent a lot of $$ on ($800 for Caroline Bessette-like bias cut 100% silk ivory slip gown with train - cheap by today's standards) I will never ever regret. It was magical, incredibly comfortable, looked beautiful, felt amazing, and I never wanted to take it off. There's investing in utilitarian items that is worth it for looks, durability and comfort, and there's the investing (that is far less frequent) in something that is part of a special experience...

On the swimsuit… i think that is swapped. It is all you have on. If you wear once twice few times a year do invest in a classic well made suit so you wont need to rush to buy one for a situation. On the opposite side, if you swim daily or often in Florida in and out of a pool, then pick up the cheaper suits because you will go through them really fast. Maybe invest also in a better one. But I will not wear a $200 bathing suit when I hop in to the pool for five minutes. Frankly, I wear my Buckees one piece (lol) or Costco or new thrifted. I pick them up on sale when I see them and throw them into a basket. But for occasions, where I am going to be in public, definitely invest during the season in a better bathing suit. If you have to do it every two years, guarantee, they may not be any regret because you have that and feel good in it, and confident with your children and family, and loved ones.

I appreciate the mention of Negative, I've been really struggling to find something that meets my needs since my favorite brand went out of business.
