Es sollte in der Friseurausbildung definitiv behandelt werden. They're whispering or talking or laughing at you while they are chit chating with others clients. Once, when I was modeling in my early 20s, I got asked to walk in a runway show for a local designer. The designer's collection was very 90s grunge-esque, so he requested a smokey eye/brick red lip for the makeup and a straight "wet look" slicked back hairstyle. The show was later in the afternoon, so all the models were scheduled to come in earlier in the morning to get our hair and makeup done. (A couple of important things for context: At the time, I was the only black model signed to the agency/All the hair stylists and makeup artists were white.) So, I'm at the venue just chilling and reading a book--waiting for my turn--when a hairstylist finally calls my name. I walk over and plop down in the chair and, before I even knew what was happening, this girl starts dousing my hair with a water bottle. Mind you, the night before, I had spent hours blowing out/flat ironing my *natural* hair because I knew the designer wanted a straight look. I'd figured that the stylist was just going to use some gel throughout the front part of my hair to give it that "slick" effect. Nope. My hair started to immediately revert back into an afro--right in front of the stylist's eyes--and she just stood there, looking on in horror. She, then, called her other stylists friends over, so they could see what'd just happened. From there, they all proceeded to just stand around, staring at my head, like I was sprouting horns or something lol. Long story short, I drove all the way home to re-blowdry my hair and re-straighten it (none of stylists had any hot tools with them, just water and gel 🤦‍♂️). Luckily, I didn't live too far away from the venue and it was still early enough that I still had a few hours to spare. Oh, and while I was at home, I took the opportunity to fix my makeup as well. The agency had hired this makeup artist--who'd recently launched her own makeup line (which, surprise, surprise...had a very limited range of shades)--and the girl had basically turned me into a full-on geisha. So, yep, that was the last modeling gig I ever did lol. I'd only been modeling for a short amount of time, but I'd already ran into *sooo* many similar experiences that I just found it too discouraging. If you're reading this, I'm proud of you for sticking with it and not letting other people's ignorance stand in the way of your happiness!! ❤

I'm Eurasian with 2C hair and I'm also sick of stylists busting out the straightening iron the minute they see my hair because they don't know how to work with my hair type. An actress named Jasika Nicole wrote a whole post about this same issue on her IG where she talked about a hairstylist cutting off 4 inches of her hair when he was only supposed to trim it because he didn't know how to work with curly hair and her bad haircut had to be written into the show's script so the audience didn't think there was a time cut. Stop calling yourself a professional hair stylist if you can only work with one type of hair texture and stop calling yourself a professional makeup artist if you can only work with one type of skin tone.

I grew up as a model from a very young age and I remember whenever I went for a shoot my mom would ALWAYS have to straighten my hair the night before. They loved my skin and features (I’m mixed with black and puertorican) but didn’t like my hair texture. Luckily I have 3b/3c curls so they can be straightening really quickly and I had a lot of length but it was always such a hassle. Glad I quit, the industry was toxic af.

Thank you so much Hannah for sharing this and being brave, it is never right for companies or anyone to view others as less and treat them with less respect, it’s important people speak out so we can demand equality & progress and getting backlash is honestly grounds for a lawsuit. I’ve always enjoyed modeling but haven’t done it much professionally yet (mostly volunteer work), and listening to your specific examples is helpful. Just sharing this to help others: Once I was asked if I’d like to come to a hair school for a curly hair workshop and I gladly accepted as I had had pretty good experiences volunteering there for years and liked interacting with & supporting the students (but did end up doing my own hair one time before a show because they neglected me /didn’t know what they were doing, now I remember). The workshop was being led by a white woman who claimed to know curly hair. She let the student wash me, who of course proceeded to wash like she would any straight-haired person, resulting in my tight curls becoming unnecessarily tangled. Then while back in the chair under the teacher’s supervision, she began to timidly try to section and detangle my hair, and once I felt she was causing a big matted area to form, I stopped and started giving suggestions. The teacher kept trying to silence me and tell me she knew what she was doing, and I raised my voice and protested, which led to us arguing and I had to leave. As you note, curly hair is more fragile and I know my hair; once a section has tangles combed incorrectly into it, with my fine hair, sometimes there’s no going back but to cut it, and it was my body they were damaging. All they had to do was be humble and listen to me, and I would’ve saved them time & effort as they were doing my hair incorrectly. I had been natural for four years at that point and had modeled with them in shows about 5 times. And to make things worse, as I left, someone at the front desk asked if I would sign a form that I would not model there again. I was younger & didn’t know better, so I signed it. But I didn’t have to and should not have signed it, because I did nothing wrong, just stand up to being abused and disrespected. I’m looking back now and realizing how I encountered racism and bad makeup, etc in many cases, and plan to respond better in the future. So if this happens to anyone else, don’t sign a form or anything like that if you did nothing wrong. And yes I’ll name drop, because this is about calling for equality, and after visiting an AVEDA hair school in a different state for a haircut recently, I saw and heard from the student & teacher themselves that they still don’t prioritize teaching the students about textured hair, how to braid, etc. The woman who worked on me was so sweet and I was nice and supportive of her, & she admitted she was scared to do textured hair. Even the black woman who was the instructor working on me ripped my hair out unnecessarily, though, and would not listen when I told her my hair needed to be finger detangled before brushing. (It was very tangled after being washed in a non-curl friendly way). Anyway, the hair school that allowed me to be disrespected and abused and then asked me to sign a form not to come back was AVEDA Institute Chapel Hill, NC. But even in another state years later the case is still the same. AVEDA doesn’t bother to really educate students on textured hair.

Just in case anyone here is thinking “why is it a big deal if they want your curls to be looser or if they want it to be straight, that’s part of the job. White women get their hair curls that don’t have natural curls and straightened who have natural curls.” First of all, in my opinion, if a white woman loves her natural curls, she shouldn’t be forced to get her curls straightened either. But as far as I’ve SEEN, white women’s hair is closer to straight hair than a lot of black women’s hair. And because of that, and other reasons, our hair is more susceptible to both visible and physical damage. So it’s not the same. They can do hair styles that don’t alter curly hair

Speaking as a white woman with type 3b hair, you're right-- the way our curly hair is, is much closer to the straight European hair standard in form and function. There is always potential fragility and damage (especially in the parts of the strand where it's thinnest, with the curl), but it is nowhere near to the same extent as type 4 natural hair. It is not the same. I also agree that there should be no need in the slightest to alter hair for a "look" or aesthetic -- the hair is part of the whole package; it is not an optional feature! I'm hoping we can get to a point where all hair, and especially Black hair, is treated with the respect it deserves.

Rachel Fox beautifully said, however, white woman need more attention to their curly hair as well. At least where I live, I don’t see white women embracing their waves or curls either. Honestly, the whole system is messed up and biased against all forms of natural curls and waves. Even the hair typing system doesn’t do curly/wavy hair justice. We have a long way to go🤦🏽‍♀️ and the one thing that can help us (the media), is often hurting us.

Had similar experience at beauty school. Was the last to leave that night around 10:30. It was like owner was mad at me. Before even starting my hair she complained of volume and density. I just wanted a set. It turned out pretty but I wouldn't go back. She kept saying oh I'll do your hair again. I have a lot of hair but it's manageable and as a hair school owner I provided a very teachable moment.

I have naturally curly hair and I have anxiety anytime someone straightens it because I have had my hair damaged from it 😭 it too so long to grow out and to have some one who is supposed to know what they are doing damage your hair is painful. this is sooo important. this is also an issue with makeup artist in the industry who barely do makeup, if any, for black (especially darker skin tones) models because they aren’t prepared with the proper shades. Once I was doing makeup for a fashion show and all of the black models gravitated to my station (bc i was the only black MUA) and they expressed all of the instances they’ve experienced where MUA’s only put eyeshadow and no face makeup bc they didnt have their shade or couldnt color match them. i even had a MUA ask “do you have a color for her?” bluntly in a models face with no shame.. The model industry is evolving but theres still a lot of things that need to be addressed

Girl, I hardly know how to do my own hair and I have very coily/curly hair. I wouldn’t expect someone else to know how to do it. Especially when curly hair reacts different no matter if it looks like another head in the room. BUTTT the “modeling” or “beauty industry” could hire more diverse stylists who know how to do natural hair. 🤷🏽‍♀️ just a thought. I understand the frustration. I can hear it in your voice. This is a more universal question for like actresses, models, etc.. why can’t the models do their own hair? Why do they HAVE to have a stylist?

Why can't a director also produce? Why can't a drummer also sing? It is all up to the skillset of each person, the professionalism of the environment, and what each project requires. However, a professional shoot should accommodate for their own vision. All makeup/hair must meet some standard for each shoot so it'd be far more reliable hiring a professional makeup/hair stylist then leaving it up to the models, who might lack a makeup/hair skillset but have the perfect look. Makeup and hair is the least a professional gig can do, and to lack training in black natural hair is a huge oversight and slap in the slap in our diversifying world.
