I think the confusion about the terminology is that everybody having periods has ovarian cysts; just usually one or two at a time. Basically, during the process of ovulation, the follicles expand into a fluid filled sack which is technically a cyst and so often called an ovarian cyst (but, seeing as they're usually harmless, I assume this is why the nhs are moving away from that terminology), the cyst then bursts and the egg is released. Some people can actually feel this happening as a sharp stabbing pain on one side of their abdomen and can identify which ovary that month's egg comes from! Having additional ovarian cysts is a symptom of PCOS, but not universal (wikipedia tells me 15% of people with PCOS have them) and other PCOS symptoms can persist even if the ovaries are removed. The usual diagnostic sign they see on ovarian scans which they call cysts are actually immature follicles rather than actually being ovarian cysts
@tristanroberts

From wikipedia: In a normal menstrual cycle, one egg is released from a dominant follicle - in essence, a cyst that bursts to release the egg. After ovulation, the follicle remnant is transformed into a progesterone-producing corpus luteum, which shrinks and disappears after approximately 12-14 days. In PCOS, there is a so-called "follicular arrest"; i.e., several follicles develop to a size of 5-7 mm, but not further. No single follicle reaches the preovulatory size (16 mm or more). According to the Rotterdam criteria, which are widely used for diagnosis, 12 or more small follicles should be seen in an ovary on ultrasound examination.

I have PCOS! I don't enjoy the side effects, obviously, but knowing I have PCOS certainly explains a lot & it's been a relief actually. Trying to lose weight to no avail was SO frustrating in my teenage years - it's nice to know there's a reason why. I'm on Alesse at the moment and it's a low dosage (of estrogen) birth control pill, and it's been really helpful for regulating periods and reducing acne - could be a decent option for peeps with PCOS. Oh also: the science has definitely changed 😂 they're not cysts, just "dead" eggs that haven't been expelled with regular periods - they appear on scans as blobs that look like cysts.

Yeah my doctor suspects I have PCOS but I've never had a weight lose issue or an acne problem, I actually had the odd case of lack of acne. Never had acne during puberty and still have never had acne as an adult. It's strange, if I actually do PCOS my symptoms run counter to the traditional symptoms.

I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS AHHHHH IM SO HAPPY YOU DID A HORMONE DIARIES OF THIS!!!!! PCOS can be quite scary i'm nearly 16 and when i found out a few months ago about my PCOS i was relieved a little due to finally having a cause for the symptoms (after 2 years of investigations) but it was quite terrifying as a 15 year old hearing all these medical terms and all the weight gain has really lowered my self esteem and body confidence, i loved this video thank you for talking about such an important thing that can occur in so many women :) x

rach ome same here! I have it as well, I haven't been "officially" diagnosed but they are fairly certain considering I have a lot the symptoms and what not, but since I'm only 15 and some of the tests are quite invasive they prescribed me meds for it anyways, I'm very thankful to be saved from the insane amount of pain every month.

Regarding to the weight gain thing: So i was diagnosed properly when I was 18. One of the reasons being was me being overweight and they marked it as a symptom. Since then (I'm 23 now) EVERY SINGLE DOCTOR TOLD ME DIFFERENT THINGS "no weight gain is unrelated" "oh yes it is completely related" and honestly? I have seen so many doctors about this issue especially recently and honestly? It feels like no one actually knows anything about this and it looks like they don't care to know. The solution usually offered is "go on the pill" and that's it. In the past year I felt so lost in the system and it just felt like that the information about this condition is completely up in the air and no one bothers looking more into it and actually help people who suffer from it

Rachel Fraser I hope that knowing what you have means things make a bit more sense and it's easier for you to understand your body. I discovered I had PCOS six months ago and I feel so much better now because all my symptoms make sense and I can be proactive in sorting them out (Doctors suggested inofolic supplements, not hormones, and a low carb diet and I lost weight / my periods came back). I hope you find medicines/supplements/treatments that work for you and your lifestyle.

Fellow PCOS girl here and I want to cry with relief hearing your experience with it. I was diagnosed at 15 as well as I hadn’t started my period yet. Got diagnosed basically by being told to stand naked in front of a nurse so she could look at my body hair and tell me it’s abnormal. Then came the scan where they confirmed it, and I was assigned to a dietitian who told me to eat less and exercise more. I’m now 10 years older still working on loving my body and learning about how the condition will continue to affect me. It’s not a serious condition for many women but it does grind on your self confidence. It’s so refreshing seeing a beautiful woman so confident with herself without trying to hide anything or denying its existence.

Insulin allows cells to take in glucose, which is used as fuel and allows the cell to function properly. So actually, when your body becomes resistant to insulin (meaning that the cells wont recognize it, and therefore they wont take in the glucose), it produces more insulin to try solve the problem. And this leads to diabetes. Also all women have follicles where the eggs grow. Normally, an egg is released from its follicle every month (ovulation). However, in women with PCOS, if the follicle fails to open and release the egg, the fluid remains inside the follicle and forms a functional cyst (which is different from cancerous - is that the word in english? - cysts)

They really need to stop telling people it will make them infertile, it won't, it makes it difficult for SOME women to conceive, but they still CAN! They should have told you that you MAY have fertility issues and if you did you could have done IVF. All hope isn't lost even if it's difficult to concieve.

I am SO happy that you have made a video about PCOS! I am 22 and I was diagnosed with it at the beginning of the year and the doctors said I should take the Yasmin pill because it would reduce all of my symptoms (facial hair, thin hair, irregular period) but my mental health declined so much since being on the pill so I decided to come off the pill 2 weeks ago and I couldn’t be happier, I have more energy and I feel so much more positive and happy. The last sentence Leena said about doctors providing a solution is so true because we are the ones that live with the condition so if the solution that they subscribe to you doesn’t work for your body, don’t feel like you have to stick with it because that’s what I felt like for a long time! Great video Hannah! More people should be talking about this x

I'm currently being tested for PCOS. I'm 27 and it's taken 10 years to get to this stage, my extremely irregular and very painful periods were always blamed on being overweight. I had a scan and apparently don't have anything on/in my ovaries leading my GP to tell me I don't have it. However another GP at my practice told me I have all the other symptoms and the "cysts" are just one symptom. I finally have an appointment at the hospital with a specialist in November. Doctors drag things out and Ness you around so much. If you're even a little overweight that's all the doctors see at first, I've suffered for over a decade because the doctors didn't test me for anything. In fact this time I was told that apparently I had a blood test 10 years ago and the results were "iffy" but I was never told, it was never followed up and nothing happened about it. I'm just glad I've finally got some answers and can attempt to move forward with things.

I like this Leena, saying a lot 'I don't really think about it, it's become normal, I read it at the time' I've come across so many people who make such a huge deal about having PCOS, and I've never really understood that, I've developed it in the last two years because of badly managed chronic pain, adrenal dysfunction, hormone imbalance and Ive bled for up to 13weeks continuously.... But in general, the PCOS symptoms are NOTHING compared to the health problems that caused it at this moment in my life.

I also have PCOS that was diagnosed at 15 and I had a TERRIBLE male doctor that told me I was fat and if I didn't lose weight to where he thought I should be that he would fire me as a patient. This is the same male doctor that told me (at a later date) that I would just never be able to have kids. I eventually switched to a new doctor that was completely horrified by his behavior.

It is socially acceptable for a girl to have facial hair, I've head facial hair since i was like 15/16, no one but my cousin and mother commented on it nor do they act any differently toward me because I had it. This is a really important video. I've had persistent nausea for about 2 years now, and after 6 months of this symptom the NHS gave me an ultrasound to try to find anything in my abdomen that could be causing this problem (e.g appendix, my ovaries, etc). I was surprised when they told me I had polycystic ovaries and my parents got really scared because they thought it was a serious problem that needed to be fixed. The doctor mentioned my "facial hair" and it made me feel super self conscious. The doctor didn't even explain what having polycystic ovaries meant properly but just said it's fine because loads of women have it and there's nothing you can do to "heal" it because it's not a problem. I struggle with weight gain and still struggle with nausea. I have irregular periods and they make me feel really emotionally horrible whenever they do happen. I'm also struggling with gender identity stuff, which really doesn't help - because I could try the pill that Leena mentioned/others, but I don't want to have more "female" hormones, and I don't want to have a period. UGH I just don't know what to do. Sorry for the long comment. Just had to share because no one else talks about it and it's really hard.

i was diagnosed about 4 years ago and my doctor explained it to me like the NHS explains it, and she did add a bit of "history" saying that some years ago doctors did though they were actual "classical" cysts. so thats probably why lena was so confused at the beggining. xx

Wow! Its like you could read what's on my mind the last few days. I've known about the cysts on my ovaries for a while, but nobody made the connection between the hormonal-inbalances and (facial) hair, etc. Just a few days ago my dermatologist told me about the connection and that I should go to a different doctor to check it. Now I at least now what it probably is and can ask the right questions when I go see my new doctor! Thanks so much for this informative videos! 😘

I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 14 (I'm now 23). I was put on the pill (Dianette) too. I have excess hair and weight gain but didn't know about the other things (insulin etc). Good old NHS choices. This video was reassuring! Thanks for talking it.

I have PCOS but after this video I feel like there are things about it that I didn't know, i had no idea about it being linked to insulin! I'm definitely gonna do some more research. Leena seems like the coolest person ever and I have immediately subscribed, thanks for the video gals! :D

I have PCOS. I’m eighteen and was diagnosed almost a year ago. I had the same primary assumptions and this completely changed how I think about it. I had NO idea what was up with my body. Thank you!

I was diagnosed at 19 and it's been such a battle for me. I'm a UK size 10 and have never been overweight so it's so frustrating to still hear some doctors saying that losing weight will help or even worse, that being overweight causes PCOS to develop. I've tried everything in terms of diet to help and nothing seems to work, if anything, extreme low sugar, low carb diets have made my symptoms worse. I could write so much about this and how frustrated I am with the lack of knowledge on this condition that affects so many women.

I'm currently being tested for PCOS and as I learn more about the more things in my life make sense. Obviously I haven't been diagnosed yet, but I'm pretty positive that I have it. I'm glad that there is more awareness!

Frank Rizzo first of all my profile picture is of jenna marbles not me (and jenna doesn't look like a dude). Second, you clearly didn't watch the video and hear what she had to say about her weight and health issues so stfu. And third, wtf does her being fat and me looking like a dude have to do with leena being funny and relatable the actual fuck

One thing we don’t talk about enough is losing pregnancies and babies. My sister is 7 years older than me, which meant at a young age I saw her and her friend falling pregnant and starting their families. It actually makes me tear up just thinking about how many people I know that have lost a child, and the struggles so many went through falling pregnant. My misconceptions of how easy it is to fall pregnant was quickly squashed, and how mentally and physically stressful, emotional, traumatic it is put in its place. Sending so much love to all those struggling right now 💕

I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 11, I’m currently 20 and have only now learned about those little sac things that are surrounding the eggs in my ovaries!!! That’s crazy. I also thought that I had cysts growing on my ovaries but alas I guess not! Love these videos ❤️

Thank you for making this video! I was diagnosed last year at 20 years old. I didn't get my period until I was nearly 17 and they've always been very irregular, but I was missing other common symptoms like insulin resistance, high androgen levels, and being overweight, so none of my doctors checked until I was 20. They did change the definition of PCOS recently (not sure how recently), so now you only have to meet 3 'criteria' to be diagnosed (acne, irregular periods, and ovarian cysts were mine).

Oh my God I was 18 when I was diagnosed. Leena's story hit so close to home I wanted to cry a little. I'm so glad we aren't alone. Love it when the doctor's say "just lose weight." Like we don't try. Also totally had that moment with the childbearing. I had always assumed I would have kids my entire life; then at 18 when I was told by my doctor that I probably wouldn't be able to have kids, I had a 5-6 year span where I told myself I didn't want kids (I think because I assumed I couldn't have them). Now, only in the last year or so, have I started wanting kids again, I think because I'm in a relationship where I feel loved and supported no matter whether we have kids or not. It's very weird.

I have endometriosis and adenomyosis very different to PCOS but they suspect I could also have that. I have tried so many different hormonal treatments and it has left my with horrible side effects from bloating and weight gain to hair loss and acne. I now have a horrible relationship with my body because it has changed so often and I don't understand it. I know that not your experience but it's nice to hear someone talk about things openly. Thank you for always teaching us Hannah

This video has made me realise how uneducated I am about my PCOS. I was diagnosed 2 years ago and given a pill to take. When I found out it was just this explains everything and then carried on. I don’t know if this is just something I’ve just experienced, but I never really knew anyone else who had it so it wasn’t something I really talked about.
