Mads Mikkelsen's accent is Danish, since he's from Denmark, the character Hannibal is supposed to be from Lithuania. Mads Mikkelsen is so good. I love his version of Hannibal. He does this subtle face twitch when Franklyn puts his used tissue on a table, and you can just tell that Hannibal is LIVID, just from him flicking his eyes over to the tissue and a few minuscule face twitches and you can see how angry he is. Garrett Jacob Hobbs is a killer from the book, a very minor one, he is only mentioned like once I think, by Will Graham, who is the protagonist of the Red Dragon book. So GJH killed the girls and ate them, he then put Elise Nichols back into her bedroom because he was sorry he killed her when he couldn't eat her. The girl on the stag's head in the field was killed by a killer who hated her, thought she was a pig, so they are not the same killer, and then Hannibal makes a breakfast protein scramble with some lungs... :P You can pretty much assume any meal we see Hannibal prepare or eat, or feed other people is in fact human in some way. Janice Poon did the food design, and she did such a great job imo. She has a book, or two I think, at least one with recipes from Hannibal, as well as a blog where she also wrote some things about Hannibal. There are lots of spoilers though, so maybe don't read it until you've seen the rest of the show, but I do recommend looking her up once you're done. :) It's an interesting read, it gives a lot of insight on how food on TV or in movies works, stuff you can't actually make, but the characters do have to eat, like human organs, endangered animals, alien food etc. or when actors have to eat something they can't actually eat due to dietary restrictions or allergies etc.

Right, I always thought Will was quite manipulative from the get go. Usually appearing or acting weaker than he is so folks underestimate him. I think Lecter could tell from the get go, especially with Wills thinly veiled aggression when they first met. He’s like “I can work with this 😎”. Once Will starts to understand Lecters obsession with him inS2 he totally uses that and honeypots the shit outta him 😂

@AraClaire2 жыл бұрын
I didn't see it pointed out (could have missed it), but Will is not on the Spectrum (this was confirmed by Bryan Fuller). Will has Hyper-Empathy Syndrome (a neurological condition which is more closely associated with Synesthesia...I have this condition, so it's something I'm intimately familiar with and one of the reasons I obsessed over the Red Dragon novel after I read it in 1983 at the age of 10 [it was released in 1981] and the entire novel series followed. It was my obsession with these characters that influenced my Majoring in psychology and decades long scholarly interests in comparative literature and mythology and philosophy. For most, the novels were just campy crime literature...but they didn't quite grasp Harris' source material. Fortunately, Bryan Fuller did. What even long time fans of the novels, films, and even this show often don't realize is that Hannibal Lecter also has the same condition Will has, and not only that, Hannibal is quite capable of compassion. When Thomas Harris created the characters, he went a little bit further than the synesthesia experience of others emotional, cognitive, or even physical experiences. Will and Hannibal have the ability to not just to reflect the perceived emotional, cognitive, and physical experience of others which can allow for a deeper understanding of someone's experience, Will and Hannibal can imprint empathically on the psyches of others. This is what makes Hannibal and Will a frightening duo. Imagine having the ability to imprint on the psyche of others to such a degree that you can virtually become them to the extent that you know their thoughts, their motivations, and what they will do under certain conditions. I'm not going to turn this comment into a meta analysis and doing a deep dive into the resource material behind these characters (yet), but I just wanted to make sure that even though you are over halfway through this series already, that the whole Will being on the Spectrum aspect was cleared up. I know others have said that this series is pretty much open to interpretation, and while I'll agree in a general sense (because all fiction, regardless of medium, retains an element of being open to interpretation to varying degrees), there are very definite intentions and there were very specific applications of references to not just the source material, but to Thomas Harris' source material which inspired his novels. PS: Hannibal isn't manipulating Will into being a killer. As I said in the comment to your recent reaction, Will both is and is not what he seems. Everything Hannibal says about Will is the truth and while Hannibal is always doing things for his own amusement, when it comes to Will, there is also a genuine desire to help him. His therapy is just extremely unconventional lol...it doesn't help that Hannibal falls head over heels for his patient either.

As someone on the spectrum myself, I'm happy to explain the "quirk" aspect of Will Graham. Depending on how high or low-functioning you are, a person on the autism spectrum develops certain habits that make their everyday life familiar. Usually this is a result of nurture influence from early childhood, or specific events that lead to a person creating these habits; examples: watching a video multiple times, hyperfixation on specific colours or tastes/smells, stimming behaviours like rocking back and forth, rubbing your fingers together repeatedly, or (this is most common with Aspergers Diagnosis) hyperfixating on a specific field/topic. What you are seeing with Will Graham is not necessarily a lack of emotional attachment from him, but rather that Will feels too much. He feels for the victims, but as is shown in the show and the books, he can fixate on the details of each case so much that he relives not only the actions of the killers, but also the last moments of their victims. When your daily job and fascinations combine together without an emotional anchor to keep these thoughts into reality, a completely rational person can fall into a bubble where their fantasies seem real.

You know, I knew immediately that dinner scene where the man was eating a fancy meal was Hannibal Lecter, and not just because they were talking about a woman's liver being cancerous in the previous scene. I knew it was him because of the piano music in the background. That particular piece of classical music is called Goldberg's Variations. It's Hannibal's favorite song. They also played it on a tape player in the Silence of the Lambs during the scene were Hannibal escapes from that Tennessee prison. He had blood all over his mouth and was waving his arm to the music like a conductor. Edit: Mads Mikkelson, who plays Hannibal here, is Danish.

Probably already got this comment by now, but the term you're thinking of is "special interest". It's kind of like a hobby, but taken to an extreme. Though I don't know if dogs would be a special interest for Will, I think it more falls under the "connecting more to animals or people" aspect of autism. Will's dogs are more like his family or friends than his actual family and friends. His collection of strays is like someone who takes in a lot of foster kids to give them a nice home. If Will has a special interest, it's murder. Maybe fishing too, but definitely murder 😆

"I wonder how accurate that is" It is stated in the series that Will's ability of 'pure empathy' is one of a kind, and that no one in the world can do what he does. Personally, I have my doubts about anyone being able to tell so much about a person just from the evidence at a crime scene alone, though there have been cases in which the profilers were more correct than incorrect in their initial assessment. If you have not already seen it, I highly recommend the Mindhunters TV series. Unlike Hannibal, it is semi-non-fictional, following the FBI as they study, investigate, hunt down and document certain real-life criminals throughout the 1960s and 70s. Until the 1960s, the word 'serial killer' didn't exist, and I like the scene in which one of the FBI agents suggested that they should refer to this specific type of killer as 'spree killer', and the group eventually settling on and coining the term, 'serial killer'.

Congrats on your chosen field and being 2 years late to your comment, i hope you've reached your first milestone if you majored in psychology as i did.. and also went on to get both my masters and specialty in teaching DBT to Cluster B disordered people. It's a wonderful vocation. With that said, i wanted to add on and say you're right in that it's not 100% accurate, but a crucial point they can't waste airtime on is all the details that someone with Hyper Empathy/Intuition also happen to notice that most aren't able to. I always describe it as "most people see 7 colors in the rainbow, but someone with hyper empathy can see every pixelated different shade in that rainbow'. So although it seems Will is just 'guessing' correctly and slapping a label to why is a small shortfall of the script writing they could've fixed just giving an extra minute in the first episode so it doesn't look so paranormal, or made-up. His guessing comes from an infinite number of details he can see and feel that others can't just do automatically. The funny bad side to this gift is that it has roots in anxiety, so people with his trait can also overanalyse situations that are just obvious. Imagine that GIF of Charlie from Always Sunny going crazy connecting all the pictures he has on a board finding the strangest connections between them and thinking they're relevant when they're not. Basically, it can be both a super human gift but also a frustrating curse depending on situation. But overall, agreed with your comment b/c some people are just wired differently making them able to do extraordinary things if aimed in the right direction. 🤍

Autism is not what other tv shows or movies will have you believe. Will is very accurate to an actual autistic person. It's why so many people with autism like myself relate with him so well. The media's concept of autism is usually the super genius savant which is as rare as Stephen Hawking irl or the low functionIng high behavior autistic which is as common as special needs in non autistic people. I don't blame anyone for not knowing. It's a very twisted and skewed portrayal by neurotypicals. Eddie Munson is also highly accurate to an autistic person which is another reSon why the community often claims them. It's funny that neurotypicals write better autistic people when they don't actively try. Autistic people are just another kind of people like anyone else.

There's a fan theory around Will and his dogs. It goes something like each one represents a case, or a person, that he had previously been unable to save. So in this theory Winston represents Abigail, which informs a lot of how Winston interacts with Will since that relationship seems to be highlighted (high-lit?) more than that of the other dogs. Just something to think about 😀. I'm very much looking forward to your seasons 2 & 3 videos!

it's not 'super ableist' just bc you relate to it. i'm a therapist and many disorders overlap in symptoms, hence why "misdiagnosing" is a flaw that's not very unorthodox in my field. For instance, i work with strictly Cluster B disorders, specifically BPD, C-PTSD, OCPD which required me 3 more years of school just to learn how to train using a very specific form of therapy called DBT that's been shown to be one of the only therapies effective in such diagnoses. BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder) main symptom happens to also be Hyper Empathy.. it's so symptomatic, in fact, that a huge part of DBT is literally teaching those with BPD how to be selfish. B/c their levels of empathy for others is so high they completely dissociate from even being their own person bc they're constantly subconsciously placing themselves in others shoes who are suffering and having an OCD drive to "fix" their pain, but totally neglect their own well-being. Healthy dose of selfishness is needed to survive and thrive in this world. My point being, calling it "super ableist" is ironically "ableist" of you and your projecting just one trait you see yourself bonding with the character of Will, who's based on a book and only keeping the lore intact. Far as I've read these same comments describing how faithful the show portrays Will's personality in the book, I have to agree with them that he is not on the spectrum of anything but happens to have the unique trait of hyper empathy that many disorders share as a symptom, but Will only seems to have that unique ability on it's own. I don't mean to sound disparaging but as a practicing psychologist, i'm a bit sensitive to mental health comments when it comes to specific words such as "ableist".. along with other things such as self-diagnosing, armchair psychology or just injecting diagnostic words into situations they don't belong. tl;dr Hyper Empathy is not unique to just one disorder, and can also just be a unique trait one has.

episode 1 is very confusing. i've seen it 5 times and it still doesn't make sense. which is fine, i only watched up through season 2. didn't finish season 3. Mads Mikkelsen is super cute.
