RoxiRoxi Me This would be interesting (especially Stalin), but actually I don’t think their characters are terribly complex or unusual. They had specific talents (Bonaparte was a gifted general, Mussolini was very good at motivating the masses, etc.), they were highly focused and competent, but more than anything they were lucky to be living at a time of revolutionary change. Without those external factors no one would ever have heard of them.

They were both exceptional in their roles. Anthony Hopkins really ‘digested’ 😆 Lecter’s character from the novel and brought it to life in the film. His mannerisms, the way he moved even his voice seemed to fit perfectly. In the series Mads Mikkelsen presented, dare I say, a far more sinister side (if that’s at all possible for Lecter); the way he meticulously prepped, cooked and presented his meals. He also brought a more physically stronger side to Lecter. I was dubious at first about Hannibal being played by anyone else, but now I don’t think I could choose a favourite. They are different but bring in true aspects of Hannibal to the role they play. Magic.

He might as well call himself Dr. Colossus. His feats of intelligence and cunning are more in line with Batman's enemies than they are with any real human being. Seriously, him and Bane are pretty much on par with each other when you consider their movie portrayals. Both have superior intellects, wear the same masks and display super human strength. Both are charismatic, evil geniuses who speak pedantically without flaw. The difference is that people believe someone like Bane can actually exist. And in reality, Lector has more in common with Magneto than he does with a real serial killer.

Such a great video, Dr. You did a spectacular job with the character analysis. Just my thoughts about a couple of things. I think many people find Lecter fascinating, because he was willing to help Clarice find the serial killer they were looking for, although he wanted something in return for helping her. And Also, I think that Anthony Hopkins' portrayal of him is probably one of the best if not the best acting jobs I've ever seen. In my opinion, if it wasn't him acting in that part, I don't think Lecter would be that fascinating. I've only read the book 'Silence of the Lambs' and seen that movie, and had no idea that Clarice and him lived together, WHOA. I was so excited when this came up in my notifications today. I'm a huge fan of the trilogy. I say "trilogy" because I just couldn't get on board with "Hannibal Rising" as a film. I enjoyed the book, though, as well as the TV series. Another fun fact about the series (that you probably already know) is that the character of Jack Crawford was based on John Douglas, one of the first criminal profilers and creator of the FBI's Criminal Profiling Program. Douglas's books make for an interesting read. Thank you for another great video!

Thanks so much for visualizing the bullet points you're currently talking about! It helps following the video a lot better! Hannibal was the book that raised my interest in psychological deep dives and fascination with those subjects. I've been watching you for the past two weeks and the videos are very interesting and informative. Your dry humour sprinkled in the analysis is great. Thank you for all your videos!

I'm always amazed by how seriously people take works of fiction as if the characters are real people. They're so concerned with how realistic a movie or book is that they fail to see the point. Entertainment. Escape from reality. My favorite genre is generally fantasy because there's no false pretense of realism needed. Another great analysis Dr Grande 👏 Edit: realized my comment isn't exactly on topic... but you get the point.

Aww Doc, your assessment of Lector has just blown my teenage sentimentality for the creepy character of Lecter right out of the water! But you are dead right... he is not a psychopath, I thought he couldn’t fit factor 2 psychopathy because he was too organised, too calm with no apparent impulsivity, and he didn’t seem to lie - he seemed happy to own what he did, and he didn’t engage in a parasitic lifestyle... I was excited to hear your analysis but as you you went through each point breaking them down I was sitting here thinking “damn, so what IS Hannibal all about then?” And there we have it - human eating super villian it is - mind blown! 🤯🤯 I wonder if Buffalo Bill, the other serial killer in Silence of the Lambs fits the psychopathy profile more clearly...? I read somewhere Harris based the idea for Buffalo Bill on Ed Gein... but who knows... I think I have asked you this before, but it would be interesting to hear your take on the Russian mystic Grigori Rasputin. Thanks for doing this vid.

It's interesting that Mads Mikkelsen (portrayed Dr. Lecter in the series) said '...I believe that Hannibal Lecter is as close as you can come to the devil, to Satan. He’s the fallen angel. His motives are not banal reasons, like childhood abuse or junkie parents. It’s in his genes. He finds life is most beautiful on the threshold to death, and that is something that is much closer to the fallen angel than it is to a psychopath. He’s much more than a psychopath, and there is a fascination for us. We can’t understand it, but we want to understand it." That about sums up the character for me.

Hi Todd, another good video! I just graduated with an MSW and when I took all those psychology related courses my favorite professors were good at doing what you do, which is providing examples of different disorders using well known fictional characters or famous people who had been in the news. It really helps people understand mental illness, so long as people understand that the diagnosis may not always be 100% accurate since we do not know all the facts surrounding their case.

I’m so glad you used the TV show Hannibal as part of your research! It showed a character with so much more compelling depth and intrigue. It’s so fun and entertaining to think that a fictionally prolific serial killer does not fit into either type of psychopathy currently understood by psychiatry. Probably not surprising with people who have the specialist education on criminology. One thing that makes Hannibal Lecter maybe the finest villain is he seems so skilled at what he does, he could effortlessly escape capture or detection if he really wanted to. That’s very compelling and scary. That and the intense paradox of being such an antiquated soul who engages in one of humanities perceived ultimate taboos, cannibalism.
