#hanoirocks #michaelmonroe #finland
Hanoi Rocks frontman Mike Monroe was born as Matti Antero Kristian Fagerholm in 1962 in Finland. His father was a famous radio and TV personality. Monroe would reveal in his autobiography thatsHis real first exposure to rock n’ roll was seeing Black Sabbath perform a show in paris on TV and that memory would stay with him for the rest of his life. Also influencing monroe at a young age was the first wo concerts he ever went to as a kid which was the band slade and sweet. And in 1976 Monroe would play in a band called Madness and he just happened to share the same rehearsal space and drummer with guitarist Andy Mccoy Who played in a punk rock band named Briard. It was there that the two met and started talking and started hit it off and Monroe at one point almost joined Mccoy’s band, but was told he had to cut his hair. While Monroe was against cutting his hair, the seeds of Hanoi Rocks were being carefully planted as he would tell Louder Sound “the punk thing was great, but you can join our punk band if you cut your hair. What? To be in punk fashion. Im not going to be a slave to fashion he’d remember so i said no and me and andy talked about putting a real band together the way we thought a cool rock band should be and that’s how Hanoi started. After skipping the army I wasn’t going to cut my hair just to be in a band he’d say
Monroe eventually left home and moved to Stockholm, Sweden and started another punk band called Nymphomaniac. The band would quickly fell apart and Michael moved back to Helsinki. By the summer of 1979 monroe was back again in Sweden and would meet future hanoi rocks rhythm guitarist Nasty Sicide through Andy McCoy. Andy was in a new band at the time named Pelle (pellay) Miljoona but was still interested in forming a band with monroe. Riding the bus one day Andy suggested the band name "Chinese Rocks" named after the Johnny Thunders song and then "Hanoi Rocks" and well the rest was history.
And Hanoi Rocks would be formed in 1979, but funny enough Mccoy wasn’t in the first incarnation of the group because he was still playing in his other band. But Mccoy did have an understanding with Monroe that he would eventually join Hanoi Rocks. The only members of the classic lineup who were in the first incarnation of the band were mike monroe and nasty sicide. The band soon hit the Finnish club circuit playing a mix of Cheap Trick, MC5 and The Police covers along with songs Monroe and Mccoy had written. At one of the band’s early shows a fellow named Seppo who was responsible for bringing iggy pop and the stooges to finland was in attendance and showed an interest in managing the band. We’ll talk a little more about him later.
When Mccoy was ready to join the group they would relocate to Sweden and have drummer gyp casino and bassist Sami Yaffa joining the band. This is where things got difficult for the band. Most of the members were literally living in the street as Monroe would tell loudersound
When we started Hanoi Rocks we were homeless. I had a few hundred Finnish marks, not much, when I left home and ended up in Stockholm. So me, Sami Yaffa and Nasty Suicide were living on the streets for the first six months, begging for change. We’d beg enough to get a hamburger to share, or a bottle of wine to forget about the hunger. We befriended other homeless people. We’d sometimes go to a bar and I’d chat up some girl, and when she’d invite me to her house, I’d say: “Do you mind if my friends come along?” Then when we got to the house we’d head straight for the fridge. He would go on to reveal that
Andy would live with his girlfriend during the time and Gyp had an apartment during their time in Sweden. It was life on the streets that would eventually shape the group’s attitude, image and sound. And According to Monroe, Sweden was merely a stopover for the band whose final destination was London, England because as he saw it that’s where the centre of the music scene seemed to be at the time. He would go on to reveal to Loudersound that the band got no love from their home county saying
Later that same year the band headed into the studio to record their debut record titled Bangkok Shocks, Saigon Shakes, Hanoi Rocks. Originally released only in the Scanadanvian countries, the album became a top 5 hit in their Finland

Thanks man. You did research and told their story very good. I really appreciate this because I were there when they started here in Finland. I remember first seeing them in TV and I loved it. My mom said to me "You better not become a punk like those guys" Next day I had Hanoi Rocks written on my hand with a magic marker and dyed my hair black. My dad told me that "Don't come home son until your hair looks normal" I was away about a week and came back home. I wore a Hanoi Ricks shirt at school and took a few beatings because of that but I never took my shirt off because of them. When they played their last concert in Helsinki, it was televised and my mom was watching it me and she cried when Michael Monroe burst into tears during "Million Miles Away" and I remember thinking "Hypocrite"lol. I was a kid back then. Again thank you for doing justice for the band that made me fall in love with Rock N' Roll. Cheers from Finland, Petri

When you deliver flowers in New York, you sometimes deliver to the famous or formerly famous, and they look at you in a particular way. If their fame is in the past, even if they are good with it, they look at you like they both want and don;t want you to recognize them. They don't want to be forgotten, but they don't want to be remembered. That Michael Monroe when I delivered him flowers in the East Village in...1991? I didn't know who he was, but looked up his name because he looked at me that way famous people do.

Lots of respect for Hanoi from the beginning until the death of Razzle. We used to play their records when they would be released out here in Seattle. I was in bands and also a good friend of Duffs. Duff split the band and went to LA with our blessings. Duff called from LA and invited us down to check out his new band. In fact Guns n Roses first show was here in Seattle. When we would visit LA we got to know the rest of his Guns mates and West Arkeen their song writer. There were Hanoi posters all over the rehearsal room behind the Sunset Grill and they were aiming at Hanoi song smithing and look. Heavily. It was a lot of fun. I see Duff every so often and pick up where we left off. I like Guns but found The Dolls and Hanoi still the mark to shoot for. Allah you fucks that say sucked and Hanoi in the same sentence are filled with more seamen than a Russian submarine.

Razzle was laid to rest in a peaceful churchyard at Binstead on the Isle of Wight (off the south coast of England). I've been there a few times- his grave marker is always decorated with drumsticks and little trinkets. Last time I saw Michael Monroe performing live was a few years ago supporting Motorhead. There was the potential, but they were already too deep in the drugs and the members were already starting to be in bad terms with each other. They would have disbanded in a way or another before the big break, unfortunately.. They were just couple years too much ahead of their time.

It's worth mentioning that Michael Monroe has had a great run with his new band from 2010 onwards. The new band also got Sam Yaffa of Hanoi in it and revolving guitarists including Ginger from The Wildhearts and Dregen from The Hellacopters depending on which album you listen. I totally recommend checking that stuff out (especially the first few albums). I prefer it over most of Hanoi's discography and in general it's really cool punk-ish rock.

You cant get life for vehicular manslaughter unless you're a repeat dui/dwi offender. Money buys you more prominent defense. That kind of attorney plays golf with the judges and prosecutors, and when he's paid well he calls in favors for his clients. Then when he works a pro bono case (court appointed), they'll all work together to throw the book at that poor bastard. I caught a felony and since I'm poor, they offered me 3 years.. I could have gotten 20 so I signed for it. It was a simple robbery. Young and stupid.. in a capitalist country it's hard to become rich unless you're extremely talented at something, passionate about it and relentless. You have to be ready to destroy everything in your path. That's why psychopaths are usually the most successful. They dont care whose lives they destroy to obtain their goals. That includes lawyers, judges, rock stars, CEOs, politicians, bankers, you name it.

They both were partying together and didn't think twice about driving. So yes, he should've done prison time, but believe me he had demons fro. It, and he didn't 'kill' him on purpose. In a world where gun -nuts are always intentionally shooting people, because they see them robbing a tv from a neighbor, ect... tbose are true psycho's who are just waiting for any opportunity to kill someone w there beloved gun!! We should be more compassionate to people who accidentally kill a friend by living reckless, it would be hard to live with that on your conscience

True story, went to the Michael Monroe gig in London at the time of Not Fakin It with my full-on make-up, peroxide blond hair, and gold jacket (circa 1989) and the very next week there was a personal ad inside the back page of Kerrang! asking for "Stuart, Gold Jacket" to get in touch. Needless to say, the girl got exactly what she was after ;-)

Hanoi Rocks are one of the ultimate examples of the "pave the way but get no credit" phenomenon. For the early 80's, Hanoi Rocks were really out on a limb doing their own thing. They didn't fit into the punk scene, didn't fit into the metal world, and were generally too dangerous for the standard rock fan. They had a sound that celebrated the best of punk, glam, hard rock, blues, pop, and straight up rock 'n' roll. Like Motorhead, Hanoi Rocks are one of those bands I use as a barometer of taste. Almost always, if a person is a fan of H. Rocks it's almost assured that they're probably pretty cool...In my realm, H. Rocks are one of the most under-rated bands in rock history. They totally laid the groundwork which much lesser groups like GNR and M. Crue would use as a stepping stone to superstardom. H. Rocks were simply too cool for the masses and too ahead of their time...

A drink driver killed my uncle at 10am super bowl Sunday in 1990. My uncle was a highly decorated marine corps Vietnam vet. The guy that hit him was an unemployed drug addict who was on a 3 day speed binge and his blood alcohol was .24. he stumbled away from the crash uninjured and wouldn't acknowledge the crash happened until 3 days later. He was sentenced to 8 years for vehicular homicide and was released from jail after 18 months. 18 months... Why? Because his father was cheif deputy for the sheriff's office. He's still around and had never once apologized to my family or my grandmother while she was still alive. That's how small town politics work.

Seeing Andy McCoy playing with Iggy Pop's band on TV, back when there were decent musical slots on a lot of British TV shows and a lot of decent, dedicated, music shows on the TV schedules in general, performing Cold Metal from the Instinct album, is a terrific memory. I felt quite cool because I recognised, straight away, who he was. Ha. It was either during Jonathan Ross's UK chat show (on which Nirvana definitely appeared one night, famously smashing their instruments at the end) or Channel 4's 'The Word' (on which L7 definitely appeared, one night with the singer Donita Sparks, famously, dropping her jeans exposing her big, unkempt, hairy muff at the end).
