Netflix’s The Dirt is a biographical comedy-drama about arguably one the most popular and controversial bands of the '80s and '90s, Motley Crue.
The movie does its best to depict the legendary rockers' rise to fame, their infamous offstage antics, and off-the-wall partying lifestyles. The band members were played by Douglass Booth, Game of Thrones' Iwan Rheon, Daniel Webber, and rapper Machine Gun Kelly.
However, although the movie did its best to capture the essence of Motley Crue, it didn't get everything right. Here are lies The Dirt told you about Motley Crue.

For anyone who knows what Mick Mars went through physically, then nothing but absolute respect should be given to him. Ankylosing Spondylitis is so incredibly painful & debilitating that I am not even sure how he did what he did for as many years as he did it. I couldn't imagine there would be enough alcohol and meds on the planet to get through it. Mad props to Mick Mars.

I agree Mick was in much pain. I saw Mick at the Omni Party, and he was still youngish, but he was not having much fun. He sat on a sofa, drank vodka as I recall, a LOT! He was stoic, quiet, people would come sit near him, try to talk, but Mick was not into it. I asked Mick, “WHAT ARE YOU DOING, DUDE?” that night. Two words…”PEOPLE WATCHING.” Mick was an island unto himself in a room a sex, drugs, booze, and he WAS rock and roll. I have not seen much of Mick, or Vince, only Tommy-Gun and Sixx. That was prepandemic. Have been in ATL and CHI-Town since then. Mick, if you get wind of GS LEE (the Novelist from ATL) you called me the “pen pusher” always, lol, take care, Bro. GS Lee, or G.

I Personally loved the film version, yes a lot was altered, yes a lot was left out but portraying 30years in hour and half I think they did just fine. The actors playing the band were brilliant and pretty much had them down to a T. All of the above differences however are mentioned in the book of the same name. The book is very detailed, it made me laugh, cry, cringe and feel utterly disgusted at times. I think the movie dumbed much of their journey down yet still managed to highlight just what an awesome band they are. The Crue are currently smashing their way back into peoples lives from the back of this movie and opening up opportunities for a younger generation to appreciate just how fine they are.

I studied music in the early 80s, played full-time rock and roll though the 80s. It was an interesting time to be on the road throughout the country. We were playing in Pasedena, Texas in 1984, and this couple came up to me and my guitarist (we are still friends today) and they asked us why we weren't spitting on them (we thought that that was so strange). We still talk about that story to this day. We saw a million things and could tell you 2 million stories.

@very droll and just like everyone else you have an opinion. If you don't like good music then why are you even commenting? Whores, so what? Every band from that era were whores. Get over it.

Mick Mars is always referenced as a dark, surly, angry and strong willed character, in the film and in real life persona. But in truth Mick was shy, reserved and avoided confrontation. The rest of the band constantly bullied him, as Nikki alluded to many times in the Heroin Diaries book, and Vince did in 'Tattoos and Tequila'. Mick was a man driven to despair by his younger bandmates. Often hiding out for months on end, trying his best to avoid contact with them. I also picked up on the Slash involvement in the first overdose. But nothing was mentioned about SIxx's second overdose, and the management's decision to cancel the European Tour (a tour I had tickets to, by the way) because they were afraid that one of them (ahem... Nikki) would never come back alive. Nothing was mentioned about Matthew Tripp (what a twat) that made headline news all over the world, Nikki's relationship with Robin Crosby, Vanity, Tommy and Pamela Anderson, Vince's war with Izzy Stradlin.... So much was missed.... But I guess I may be wishing for a four hour film.

@@daveglander1 Pamela may have opted out for legal/emotional reasons. Same with the family of Robin Crosby who died of heroin. Yes, Mick didn't get a fair portrayal and hearing what he really went through pisses me off. Without his skills, they never would have amounted to anything.

Mick went through that all and it actually made him that strong willed persona. This and other tough things he had to face in his life. But even though he's dark and mysterious, he's very humble, kind and nice.

2:52 making it seem like it's out of the ordinary for vocalists to read from lyric sheets while recording. Almost every vocalist does this in the studio at one time or another, whether they wrote the lyrics or not. Lots of the time songs are being "constructed" while in the studio--changes are made, lyrics are rearranged, and even if not the vocalist hasn't exactly sang it a ton until they start demos, and then after they hear the demo further changes are usually made...recording is an ongoing process and lyrics sheets are necessary. Accidentally replace one word with a similar word and the song can take on entirely new meaning, so it's important to get it perfect.

I just finished watching it and I thought it was well done. Yes, I read the book, long time fan of Crue. If the movie stuck to the book it would have been too much. Good job.

That's how movies work. You have to condense the story while telling the gist of the story at the same time. They did a good job of that.
