Mike Monroe was a common sight in my hometown of Turku, Finland, even a couple of years ago. He could be seen riding his bicycle in the city center and along the river Aura with bags of empty bottles. Finland is among those very few countries where even a world-famous person can walk on the streets without anyone bothering him and living a rather normal life.

Such a beautiful chorus. For those saying Hanoi Rocks should've been bigger, you're right. But after reading their book, I don't think they'd have lasted long even if the Razzle tragedy never happened. They were a mess (except Monroe), with Andy and Nasty on heroin, and Sam and Razzle partied hard too. Monroe, who was a health nut in' 84, likely would've gotten fed up with their addictions. Those guys lived hard, living the Motley lifestyle. It's possible they could've gotten through it, but unlikely. Also, in the mid 80s, arena rock was what sold and Hanoi were more traditional rock N roll. They may have looked like the bands that copied them and sold millions, but their sound was pretty different. They're still one of the greatest rock bands ever, and fortunately they reunited later and also their side and solo projects are very good.

As a longtime fan, I never understood all the comparisons/connections to bands like Motley Crue, Guns n Roses, and ESPECIALLY Poison... aside from Vince Neil getting Razzle killed and a few very obvious, but superficial comparisons in the ‘looks’ department. Musically and attitude-wise, those bands were in a whole different universe from Hanoi Rocks. HR may not have been a ‘punk’ band, per se... but they were definitely punks, and that was their main influence. Those other bands came from a totally different background, and were much more metal-influenced. Motley Crue attempted to emulate their look (poorly I might add), but that’s where all comparisons begin and end as far as I’m concerned. GnR were a tiny bit closer to nailing the attitude, but not enough to really mean anything significant. I really have no idea whatsoever how fucking Poison fits into the equation, aside from wearing makeup. I know all those bands cited HR as some kind of big influence, but I just don’t see or hear it. Hanoi were true originals. Maybe the ONLY 80’s band to successfully meld 70’s glam with punk fire and attitude, and forge a new style. Too bad they never really got their due.
@azrailnone
@azrailnone 5 жыл бұрын
they influenced these bands, what are you talking about?? Even Axl himself told that if not Hanoi there would not be GNR...
@CapHowdy
@CapHowdy 5 жыл бұрын
Influence is not just about sound it is about attitude and style. Many bands will offer up bands like the Stones, Beatles and The Who as influences while sounding nothing like them. Influence can range from anything as simple as making the artist want to be in a band in the first place, to lyrical style or song structure. They do not have to sound even remotely like the band they influence. I do not really get where you think Motley tried to copy their image though. The bands started around the same time and Motleys initial image looked nothing like Hanoi, and probably owed more to the likes of Alice Cooper and Kiss than Hanoi. Then come Theatre of pain, every band and their mother were dressing like that.
@DaidohYuzan
@DaidohYuzan 5 жыл бұрын
@@CapHowdy Hanoi was mainly influenced music and look wise by New York Dolls, as was Sex Pistols. While Mötley was mainly influenced by Kiss and Alice Cooper. So they had pretty different roots, although ended up close to same result. Poison then again by Kiss, Alice Cooper, and Mötley and Hanoi. GNR states their main influence to be Hanoi. All four bands fall to Sleaze rock genre, but while Hanoi is in the middle and kind of the original. Mötley is mostly more Glam metal (like Kiss and Twisted Sister), not really punk oriented by any means. Poison is what MTV made Sleaze rock to turn to (pop "metal") and GNR was kind of a renaissance act, taking it more back to what Hanoi made (Pre-Punk + original Glam rock). To put it in other words, all four are kinda similar hard rock, but only two of them you can put to same collection with Iggy Pop.

Ashamed to say I didn't know about them. I'm from Scotland. I should have . Sayin that I was born in 86 .. raised on Alex Harvey, Bowie, pistols, n Sinatra. Just seen Motley's Netflix movie the dirt. Brilliant. Wish someone would maybe attempt Keith moon's movie biopic.

You are right about the death of Razzle. But when this song was recorded - and its promo video, he hadn't joined the group yet. The drummer here is Gyp Casino.
