Hanoi Vietnam's Distinctive Shaped Tunnel Homes | Show Me Where You Live Compilation

Today he is heading to Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. On a journey to see its tunnel houses, these homes are in the heart of the old quarter and combine trade activity and a family home in the same space. Called tunnel homes due to their narrowness and depth, sometimes these homes can go up to five stories high. Next, Philippe heads to Kandovan, a village in the East Azerbaijan Province of northwestern Iran. Thousand-year-old volcanic eruptions created cones of rock that are now carved out in what is called a troglodyte dwelling, some of the oldest dwellings in the world.

that's true, i know that hanoi has had a few accidents with these houses. a few complexes have burned down and trapped some people. these houses still persist but they're not as dangerous as they seem. fires are rare, and when they do happen they don't burn down an entire street, not even close to that. vietnam just needs to continue developing to make these houses safer and find solutions to the housing issues.

New Orleans USA has "shot-gun" houses. Originally, the Mississippi River was like the street and the plantations were thin strips of land. Like the shops need to open onto the street, each plantation needed access to the river. This idea was translated from plantation to homes in and around the Central Business District. It's about the market.

As soon as I saw the inside of the Vietnamese house, I immediately thought of shotgun houses, which can also be found in Texas. Housing like this exists all over the world. As a kid I was told the name came about because a person could discharge a shotgun from the back door and the shell would exit though the front, which the adults seemed to find very amusing.

But they didn't. The houses are tightly packed with each others into a sort of singular structure. There is no gap between the walls of two adjacent houses, and each house is braced by three or four other immediate houses around it, so even if its reinforced concrete frame is deteriorating for decades the house is still standing. Those individual things became 'The Thing', possesses properties of a collective. And yes, we have comprehensive and up-to-date building codes for all kinds of residential construction. But this is Vietnam, man. You can either bribe the officials always, or throw tantrum until they yield and pretend none of your code violations happen.

The homes in Hanoi are very common in Vietnam. The Vietnamese like to live and work in the one place. I can’t imagine the heat on the higher levels though if they don’t have air conditioning. The long narrow ways are dark and claustrophobic, let alone seem very unsafe if there was a fire etc. There seems little light in the rooms unless you go right up to the top. How do you carry all your belongings up there? It must be tiring? I recall being in Spain and was at a friends apartment with flights of stairs to walk up. No elevator’s, it was tiring! Their homes were tiny & hardly any space as well, but they make do. The Vietnamese are used to this kind of living. I mean they dug out homes in tunnels during the war times to fight - being Cu Chi Tunnel. Amazing how they lived in there and raised their kids. They are very resilient people. I think the more higher you get, the more higher in statue you are in wealth.

Those house have it's history. In the beginning all those house in that narrow corridor belong to one single family, it's a long lot. The family would use the front for shop and the back is where they import material for the shop. Then the revolution happen, anyone own a house at old quarter would considered rich and a oppressor, every thing they have would be taken. Any family ,who still have their property, lost their wealth and mean of living, children of those family was denied university education . Therefor, their kid can not move out and they had to divided what left for their children. That is when those narrow corridor and small apartment appear.

it is not like they want to but rather have no other choice . would you believe if i tell you those house could cost you 400 - 500 thousand and when you get in the city city cost can be 3 - 4 time that amount . the cost of land in those city are very very high for that reason , they tend to build up to maximize their space . especially those house which face the road giving them the advantage to conduct business . let put it this way would you rather own a small home that bring you work and income or bigger space but have nothing .

But we don’t have to pay YEARLY TAXES PROPERTY LIKE US & WESTERN!! Example: my house is 50sqm2, we’re paying 5$/yearly property taxes!! You see the difference ‘ the house is ours for generations though generations!! It’s expensive because ppl want live in downtown or city. While city have only this land & land can’t breeding!! If ppl want cheaper house then buy in countryside or outside of city. IT VERY BASIC COMMON SENSE. I don’t get why ppl complain how expensive apartments & house in city. nope. lots of people own mansions or houses on separate pieces of land just like any other country. what you saw in the vid was the old quarter, the most rundown and historical part of hanoi's tube house traditions. i was wondering why it looked so old and poor like in the 70-80s but then they said old quarter and it made sense

If you must use the word “dark,” it also applies to the colonial period. I really don’t care for the way words like “dark” and “primitive” are applied to human history or consider it to tell us anything useful about that history. And last time I checked North Vietnam is still Communist.

It is indeed still communist, but only in the sense of being a one party state. Otherwise, capitalism reigns supreme. Everyone seems to be a mini entrepreneur. The 100 years of French rule was great for the French and their hangers on, but ordinary Vietnamese suffered terribly. The communist party, as in China, has lifted millions out of abject poverty. Speak to any Vietnamese and they support their government because they've all heard from grandparents and other older family members stories of how dreadful life was under the French. I agree with you, language is important, and is often used to convey opinion as fact.

Nice piece of film.. But "The dark years of communism".. erm not sure where you're getting that from. Communist revolutionary forces liberated the country from it's oppressors and the party still runs the country today. Also, there has never been communism here, or anywhere else, just state socialism first followed by a socialist market economy.

"Tunel house is the tradition" This sentence of the VietNam guy is a lie, His family must build the tunel house because of lacking space. Vietnamese always try to build a house like that to make use of all space sometimes they invade the pavement of a neighbor's land to enlarge their house. Especially in northern of Viet Nam, those who live there always do that. So it is not tradition, it represents the lacking of space. And he told that he must live at the same house with his parent to take care of them is not true, because maybe he do not have enough money to buy another house so he don't have any choice other than live there, taking care parent is a fake reason.
