HanRongDa HRD-104 AM FM Stereo Portable Radio Review

I got the grey version of the radio a few days ago. I am impressed with it for the cost. The AM reception is better than I expected for an inexpensive digital radio. I like the signal level indicator!

I recently ordered a HRD-104 from Walmart in what I thought was good, but the radio pictured was black. When the radio arrived, I opened the package to find a black radio instead of the gold radio I thought I was getting! Luckily Walmart refunded my money, so I’ll donate the radio to Goodwill. By the way the radio came in a HanRongDa box though their name isn’t on the radio. You’ll be happy to know that they corrected it to say loudspeaker instead of loudspeaer!

Todd, do you know whether a PDF or screenshots of the user manual are available online? That would be a big help for people who’ve lost theirs. BTW, a rare feature on the HRD-104 is the Micro-USB power input, which makes your power bank an alternative to AAA batteries.

Yeah I got one second hand and have no idea how to program different stations or set the time. So it's kind of annoying not know how to set it up.

I purchased the ZHIWHIS version from Amazon for $16.99, though I was able to get a 10% discount with a coupon. The nice thing is that the radio arrived the next day, unlike the cheaper radios that wouldn't get here until February! I'm not sure if the FM comes in stereo, I would think that there would be some kind of indication to show that it's in stereo besides hearing that it's in stereo....

There are various null zones on DSB radios, often around 860 to 900 khz. Probably the CPU operationg frequencies.

I'm not sure where I packed this little guy away, but I can almost make out in the instructions that you quick press memo, and select a position and press memo again to save the preset. If I find the radio I will take a picture of this page to help. Speaking of rebranding. I found a Bell & Howell radio at my mom's house that's identical to my Tecsun R-909. Right down to the "It's a world receiver!" printed on the top. It's scuffed up and the antenna's bent. I have to ask her, but I bet it's 10 years old or more.

i have a question on this radio if you hold down the scan button will it keep scaning as long as you are holding the scan up button or scanning down button if you physically hold it that is ?

Yes it does, but it mutes while tuning. My old Radio Shack DX-390 with the no mute on tuning mod lets you manually hold the button down and scan the entire band while being able to hear the stations as you pass them. It's a larger radio, but an easy mod.

yes when the radio is off hold down the memo delete button it will flash 12 or 24 hrs press the same button again the hour will flash use the tuning button to change hour press the memo button again do the same with the minutes when you know how it's really easy i hope this helps someone.

Andy Anderson There are reviews all over on it. I bought one a couple of Hurricanes ago (Jacksonville Florida). I fine radio compared to other “ modern “ radios. But I feel it’s just not up to Sony standards. They did give it a hinged battery door, and it takes headphones/ear buds, instead of a single earplug. Also quality is somewhat inconsistent. Walmart now sells it ,in-store now, instead of the trash they used to sell, which is cool. There are better, there are worse, and there are far worse. A fine radio, just didn’t impress me all that much. I really like my Tecsun R-233.

If you don't need pocket sized radios moving up to the portable sized class that can have larger antennas can benefit. I have the Sony ICF-F10 and the older version of the P26, the Sony ICF-S10MK2. The ICF-F10 tunes both AM and FM much clearer and on 2 D cells it runs about 1000 hours when used at low volume on one set of batteries. I used mine for years as background music doing projects all day long and it was amazing to just turn it on and listen with no regards for wall power or battery changing. I bought 3 of them (2 for my mom and uncle) and unlike other cheap radios they are simple and dont seem to stop working as all 3 still work just like the day I bought them. You can buy D cell holders that fit 2 AA batteries and use rechargeables also at the cost of run time. Sadly the F10 has become so popular the price is jacked up more than triple what it was 5 years ago. Its should be a $15 radio that is amazing for that price.

The 103 has a nice headphone experience, but if you need extra clarity you many have to spend more on a quality radio such as a Sangean.

@@todderbert thanks for the advise. I know FM can sound really good, almost like the original music but hrd104 flipped the polarity on one of the headphone channle making it sound like out of phase. Its a cool effect but not ideal for good listening. Sangeans is not availsble from where i am sadly.

They sent me a 9khz radio setting instead of a 10khz one. Are they permanently set, or can they be adjusted?

You can adjust it. The instructions are a little difficult to read, but you long press the M+ and Lock Buttons at the same time, 9 or 10 will display, then use the tuning up or down to change it. Make sure the power is off and the clock is displayed.

hey Todd, is the AM as bad as the horologe's? giant 750 AM. barely comes thru and WDUN 550 is completely absent. both are 30-40 miles from me. that horologe is the worst AM radio I own. thanks for the review.

@@todderbert Horologe is on AM and on late night I can pick WJR Detroit 760 mile and Chicago 720 , and 650 Tenn .(very clear and no noise) I live near the GA FL. Boarder this I was unable to pick up any of them. It barely picks up any stations during the day.

The FM was great however the AM was very poor it as could not even pick up 600 WBOB which all my radio could easily pickup. I used it for a couple month and the power no longer works !
