6:14 it’s not that Hans forgot the importance of the diagonal. Here Hans simply misunderstood the position after white played c5. Hans thought that he was in trouble because he had a dead bishop. With his pawn on c5 his bishop had no moves. This is why he sacrificed the pawn back and put his bishop on the more active c5 square. Hans thought that white’s bishop coming to h4 was not important, because now the d file was no longer the only open file. However what Hans misunderstood was that when Robson puts his bishop on h4 the nature of the game changes completely. These types of Spanish games are typically slow maneuvering games where white tries to limit black’s piece activity, wrench a pawn away from black, and then win a favorable endgame. However, when Robson puts his bishop on h4, suddenly black’s king is in quite a bit of danger because white controls all of the dark squares around black’s king. Thus the game changed from a maneuvering game to an attacking game which Hans didn’t realize soon enough. What Hans should have done instead of sacrificing the pawn back on c5, is he should have gone rook d5 to protect the pawn and essentially said “you can win this pawn back, but we will exchange a lot of pieces.” Even if the endgame appears good for white, black’s ability to threaten repetitions on white’s king will always be a strong enough defensive resource to ensure a draw, even if white is able to go up a pawn or two.
