That's the whole purpose of this scene guys. His character is that of a detective that gets satisfaction from outsmarting his victims. (It's actually implied later that he isn't really even loyal to the nazis, when he makes a deal with the Americans) In this scene it's heavily implied that he knows who she is, but neither we nor Shoshanna know for sure. An example is how he keeps asking her questions about her identity, probing at her story. Tarantino did a great job with the whole cat and mouse concept. Even as the audience we can feel the crazy amount of tension building up... then he leaves and Shoshanna lets out a huge gasp.

+Derek Kudjer I completely agree. His character of Landa should of been turned into a series. Like HBO or something. And as someone who has WWII reenacting I can tell you the costumes in Basterds are flawless down to the detail of how the insignia is worn. Which is funny to me since this movie isn't purposely historically correct. But who cares, it's such a great flick.

@willmarsden76577 жыл бұрын
I'm glad they didn't; the Iron Side Sirens were great in Kill Bill because the Bride was capable of enacting swift brutal revenge on an adversary that wronged her - Shoshanna on the other hand can't; she needs to (as a Landa put it) be a hidden rat in a world pressing hard down on her, and the tension when that plan could come apart with Landa arriving was intense - this music was perfect ^_^

Guys, this scene is absolute genius. You see, Strudels, usually back then, were made with lard- pig fat and the creme has dairy, and these two are non kosher and Jewish diet consist of only eating kosher. Hence another one of the Jew Hunter’s tricks to test Shoshanna’s faith

Jewish people can drink milk, but mixing it with other animals is prohibited by Jewish law. "Most Jews do not mix milk or cheese or any milk product and meat together in the same meal. This is because of the interpretation of the command not to boil a kid in it's mother's milk."

+AntiTroll101 In the opening scenes of the movie, Landa was looking for Jews in the farmhouse; he asked for a glass of milk. Shoshana was hiding under the floorboards. She might have seen/heard through the cracks that Landa had asked for milk. For us watching the movie, we were left with the possibility that he recognized her and that ordering milk for her was his way of letting her know that he knew who she was. The creme scene has something to do with non-kosher food.. another way to test her to see if she was Jewish.

Christoph Waltz is a Supreme Actor, in spite of being average sized physically, he conjures up a monster through his acting skill and personality. The music at his intro is so high octane and fitting, that it makes you love the power of cinema and soundtracks. RESPECT for Tarrantino and his team.
@riazhassan65702 жыл бұрын
Size matters for some ‘tough guy’ roles, maybe, though some actors manage to be ‘big’ despite their physical smallness. Landa is an intellectual polyglot. His bigness comes from his sharp brain and his skills as a detective, somewhat like Columbo

honeykrisp/ I agree. And I remember the 'Ah, Landa, you are here' cut was also came out suddenly. That cut just came out abruptly like interrupting gesture. And right after that, soldier's foot stomp and salute, Landa's sudden appearance behind Shosanna, the beating soundtrack, so exciting. This style of editting or scene-showing(?) appears so often in Tarantino films, and I think it is definitely one of the things that make Tarantino's style distinguished from all other movies.

So many amazing parts from this scene alone. From his entrance, to him ordering her milk to how he pauses from time to time. I like how Waltz stops to admire his streusel before he begins to eat it. Then he stops to chew his streusel and stare at her before he continues his interrogation. I also like how they actually show the cream being scooped up lol. I was wondering if Waltz was testing Emmanuelle again when he stares at her for a minute while lighting his smoke and then says he had something he wanted to ask her and fixated on her before stating he couldn’t remember. Just look at his face lol.

I still remember the harsh gasps and “oh, shit”s I heard all over the theater when Landa appeared. That’s a testament to both Tarantino (for smartly withholding him from the story just long enough for the audience to sort of forget) and to Waltz (for being absolutely perfect for the part).

-- Note that Landa slightly mispronounces some words. Shoshanna is genuine.

I've always hated this kind of situations in real life - someone you know needs to have a bad conversation with you: but they rock up with smiles and candour. You lose your nerve because the issue is between you and the other person to the ignorance of everyone else, and you know that axe is going to drop the second the group disperses.
