Truthfully, Mahler used a lot of little things found in this symphony, and can be found in almost any work he did. For example, the third movement alone has some themes from Mahler's 1st, 5th, 7th, 9th, and 10th.

Rott was one of the most tragic figures of the late romantic period. This symphony is as good as the best written by any of his contemporaries, so similar to both Bruckner and Mahler. He destroyed much of his own work while in the mental institutions of his day. What he could have achieved if he had not been schizophrenic? We are so fortunate to have that portion of his music that did survive.

I was greatly pleased to find this live recording of what may be my favorite symphony. It simply amazes me how effortlessly Rott notches up the tension again and again without overdoing it, and how he writes extended passages without sounding long-winded. He is also a master of segueing around through tonal centers. Some of his wandering progressions resolve so perfectly, I can't help but smile. He writes well for all instruments. And such a masterful symphony written between about the ages of 20 and 22!

I think that (A.) Each USA and other worldwide orchestras and the powers that be should watch this video and learn this symphony and play its heart out; and, (B) this conductor should make guest appearances with quite a few U.S. orchestras, big and medium names, and perform this symphony. I have a feeling more and more orchestras will want to jump on the Hans Rott bandwagon. It is that moving, towering, and overwhelming a symphony. Cannot stop crying each time I hear this work.

Bravissimo!!!

I was entirely narrow minded and uninformed in my puny music education. At some level given what notes we accept as useful for music, the possibilities are broad for magnificent compositions. To believe that is/was limited to only a handful of "great" composers was narrow on my part. There is nothing wrong with this work. The only obstacle, whether one likes or not. I like it. It enriches my listening repertoire.

It wasn`t just your music education it was a general practice years back to virtually ignore many extremely gifted composers who were outside the ``accepted`` greats. I was looking at a ``Gramophone`` record catalogue from 1962 recently and was amazed at the omission of so many works that we can now hear and marvel at. The music world in those days was much more narrowly focused.

It is soooo obvious that Mahler knew well this work and got some ideas from the scherzo and the beginning of the 4th movement for his own first symphony :) And what a glorious music this symphony is! The scherzo, by itself, is one of the best quick movements I ever heard from the whole symphony repertoire! No inferior to Mahler, and sometimes even better than Bruckner or Mahler. A great loss, no doubt! And, by the way, a marvelous performance, full, of energy! The best music here, for me, is the scherzo and the beginning of the 4th movement, but in the whole is a marvelllous work. A little less triangle and some more intervention of the woodwinds, plus here and there some changes in the string writing, due to lack of orchestral experience, and this would be perfect. For the young age of Rott, make us dream what the music lost with his death at 26...

Amazing, amazing....as an imperfect work can become a masterpiece. Yes, mistakes of youth, material to polish, but what a material! No matter the influences, no matter what Mahler did with the infinite ideas here present (thank you Mahler), it does not matter the imbalance of some instrumental families. What matters is the emotion, the sense of wonder, and the experience in which this music becomes. Pity of brass section...and what a pity what the world of music has lost ...
@IFIP
@IFIP 6 ай бұрын
> it does not matter the imbalance of some instrumental families. I suspect that this is due to our modern instruments. Imagine this with historical brass and woodwind, gut strings, and someone really able to pull it off, maybe Jos van Immerseel. It may very well be that this symphony's instrumentation truly shines with historically informed orchestras. Unfortunatly, there are only a handful that play such a late repertoire.

In the first five minuets alone I heard a metric ton of Mahler motifs and liet-motifs from nearly every big work can think of. Rott was like a ghost stuck inside of Mahler's world of music, constantly poking it's head out.

Rott and Mahler were good friends and classmates at the Vienna Conservatory. In the Mahler biography by Kennedy, it says that Mahler greatly admired Rott, and took plenty of inspiration from this piece in particular. This piece was panned by Brahms however for being derivative of both himself and Wagner. It's a shame that Rott died so young. Imagine the music we would have if he had lived and been anything like how Mahler turned out.
