The Fan is a 1996 American thriller film directed by Tony Scott, and starring Robert De Niro and Wesley Snipes. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Peter Abrahams. The Fan is a psychological thriller that revolves around the sport of baseball, exploring the overt dedication of some of its followers.
Fan Poem (Speech by Robert De Niro):
Excited and anxious I await my dream
To escape, applaud And embrace my team
Opening day I always can trust
It's just for this high
That I crazily lust
Return of our hero
Does brighten the days
Just briefly, my troubles
Get lost in the haze
The grace from the field
Arouses the crowd
Reflects on the days
When I was quite proud
I'm more entranced
Than the average fan
I used to play, you see
And I know I still can
That time I drove the ball
With such loft
My exit atop shoulders
As they carried me off
This pastime and
I Just fade into one
Expanded upon From father and son
My boy is young
And awkward for now
I just need the time
And can show him how
I really am quite close
Just a break away
From straightening things out
And being okay
I can help my team
To regain its glory
With just a little twist
To the same old story
Players say now
They play for themselves
This causes a burning
Within me that dwells
The fan is the one
Who pays for the game
Which bestows all the riches
And welcomed fame
The players will listen
But really don't hear
All the while just hiding
Behind an invisible tear
I grow tired now of all this greed
And chart a course to set things free.

This music has had such an impact on me. Its an amazing movie, but it's this song that really takes it to a whole other level. This music as been with me in some hardest moments in my life, and it's message while it makes me sad, also makes me look forward. Because it's true, theres really no healing power like letting go. I remember crying on the train while listening to this music, I had just found out my granny had died. The other day I was watching this movie and at the end with this music I could hold the tears, all the memories came rushing in. Amazing music, and an underrated movie.

@@jaycompany4886 You thinking finding out Rayburn didn't care made him go mad? By that point in the movie, he had already murdered somebody and done numerous other self serving and awful things because of his obsession with baseball. He is already mentally disturbed from the start. That is the point. He loses his job and his son because he prioritizes baseball over them. Rayburn's comment about not caring merely triggers his animosity toward the target of his psychotic obsession. By saying that he doesn't care, Gil now views him as an ingrate. He viewed his erratic behavior as sacrifices for Bobby's cause. They were not. They were selfish moves designed to make Gil feel like he was part of something bigger.

Robert DeNiro may have played an overly obsessed character with sadistic intentions to guarantee success in the Wesley Snipes character. But when he recites that poem and concludes his performance with the words: "Now do you care...just a little bit...", I can feel a touch of love, admiration and sadness for 'Gil Renard'. Thanks to the foreboding background music, I was literally tearing up.

A great movie, with a great message around it. Personally one of my favourite films. I really enjoy how it shows the somewhat perspective of a "true fan" (not the messed up apart of it especially Gil's mental issues, true fans don't do that, those are for maniac super fans). Even though I'm not a giants fan, nor a baseball watcher, I follow this other club, and even sponsor/support it, and I could say I would feel like Gil sometimes when some players, would not care about its fan or the club, just the money part of the sport and the club. You can see this in many other clubs but luckily my club has never had that issue and were one of the most successful, & underrated team in European futebol ⚽, we may not be the biggest, but its what we are that makes us who we are. To me, a true fan of a club is a fan that supports from the start, never backs down, and always wants his club to succeed. A true fan doesn't care if his team wins or looses, and they are proud of its history. They don't wear the jerseys or badge to show off, but instead to represent the club, and show that they are apart of a family. It's so hard to explain what a true fan is to be honest because its not really something you can explain, but you feel. I've supported my club since the start, and I was raised around it. The club has given me so much, and I'm proud of it''s accomplishments. I can be judged for supporting it, but I'll never be ashamed of it. I wear the badge with pride. A true fan, such a hard concept. Now back into the movie as I sidetracked lmao. Great movie, with two great actors, definitely my top ten favourite actors and the movie as well. I don't understand its bad rating, but I think it gives a great message, about what fans give, and what players should think before playing as I do. "As it says; Without fans you would be fucking nothing, we give you your 40 million" -Gil. No matter what, a true fan always does stuff to support his club, and are not ashamed of it, but remember, to support your club legally. But yeah, a great movie, touching a complex topic of fandoms. To be honest, I would love to write a blog or a book about what being a true fan is to a club, and this will definitely be a touching point for it. Only thing is to exclude the illegal and gruesome stuff, which I totally wish Gil didn't have to resort too. 📌 1893 forever. I hope people don't think I'm crazy for writing this much. I'm just glad I get to be with such a great club and take part of it. What a great fucking film though, great sound track, actors, storyline and just overall a really really underrated film.

The fans, your team, and your family are very important. The most important thing to play for and look out for is yourself. Not in an arrogant way. Looking out for number one in life is what makes someone happy. As long as they don't disrespect others. This is why Bobby started playing better because he stopped caring about being the best/trying to live up to what the fans/press expected of him.

Chapters in life sometimes end, friends you adore sometimes feel as though they must leave you,or are taken from you. For those who tried to hold onto them, you are not to blame, and you played your part the way it should have been played. So rest in the comfort that you were there, and you did far too much anyway.
