This video completely records the entire process of making the dagger. The steel plate forged from countless steel balls, I call it Dragon Skin Damascus. Under the reflection of sunlight, this dagger can reflect colorful colors. This is my favorite work and the most complicated dagger to make. Thank you for watching.
This dagger was designed by Neels Van Den Berg (ABS MS). You can find the drawings on their website.www.blackdrago...

How many people are here because of an interest in bladesmithing, and how many because it's so satisfying to watch the superheated steel get squished by the press? 😁

The key to this was so simple, yet imperative. Vibrating the canister to allow the powdered steel to sink in the canister to fill the spaces in between the ball bearings was genius. Well on you good sir!

It's because most of the time, people keep pressing it to draw the desired length, in this case, I bet he carefully chose the tube length to not press more than the forge weld would require. You can even see that he cut off a lot of leftover, thick wise, from the forged tube.

@JoshuaBerner

The knowledge of how to form a blade was handed down to man by the fallen angels with the specific intent of man killing one another, which makes it anything but "holy." Ascribing divinity to instruments of war is similar to telling kids they can get gender reassignment surgery if they think they should have been born a different sex so they can feel better.
@gamedokter
@gamedokter 2 ай бұрын
@@JoshuaBerner I would argue that there are many uses for blades apart from killing people. Cutting food and plants are both very important. If you wanted to make a basket out of reeds or something it would be much better to have a sharp blade instead of trying to tear everything yourself. As humans are by nature sinful, I feel the use of knives as a weapon most likely developed later after it's invention.

I think I like everything except the handle of the dagger. Mostly because I'd functionally want a dagger rather than awkwardly shaped handle. Things that would have made the handle better: Reverse the direction on installation. Narrow end towards the blade. Incorporation of flats on the handle so the blade can easily be indexed in the hand.

it's a beautiful blade, beautiful craftsmanship and it looks incredibly amazing. The only thing I'd nitpick as someone who's been using blades all their life would be that the grip is round. That isn't nitpicking your craftsmanship, it's nitpicking the standard design itself of such a dagger.

@graboidgang9077
@graboidgang9077 2 ай бұрын
Nah you missed his point. He's not saying the round grip is innapropriate because daggers don't have round grips, obvs they do, he's just implying that he prefers more ergonomic handles. I agree with his gripe tbh, round handles kinda suck. You lose a lot of non-visual feedback relating to the orientation of the blade in your hand when using a round grip, meaning keeping proper edge alignment requires you to check visually or thumb the crossguard. This is annoying when chopping through foliage in thick gloves for example.
@volkardlokisson6292
@volkardlokisson6292 Ай бұрын
That and the handle construction overall is prone to damage. I got into blade smithing because I got tired of purchased knives breaking on me. A better approach would be to have the tang go all the way through the pommel or at least 80% through it. Thread it on with a very strong epoxy or have it go all the way through with a concave conical space in the tip of the pommel for you to peen the tang into the space so when you grind away the peen it will still hold. You can still get the same shape of the pommel even but with a construction that will never come apart no matter how roughly it is handled.
@IIIAnchani

@@graboidgang9077 What I actually wanted to say is that I'm too lazy or incompetent to use daggers with round handles as well as daggers with more oval or even polygonal shaped handles. But then agian I'm not expecting the dagger we saw made here to be used for any kind of bushcraft. So in this case, indeed design (which is absolutely flawless!) can be prioritized over function.
@IIIAnchani
@IIIAnchani Ай бұрын
@@volkardlokisson6292 I absolutely agree on everything you said here, and still, we probably need to take into account the intent of the piece. This would be used to open letters from nobility or to be passed on as an heirloom for ceremonial purposes, most likely, and not as a weapon of combat. Still you're absolutely correct and functionality is the utmost key aspect for probably both of us when considering blades, yet I think the piece we're priviledged to admire here is in all likelihood rather to be considered art than tool.

Amazing pattern! Just a little advice for your lathe to serve you longer, keep it away from the sawdust, it absorbs moisture really well and gets really well under the carriage. It is possible to just cover the ways and leadscrew with something but I generally avoid abrasives and wood near my lathe. Worst case you can actually make a wood turning fixture with your lathe, probably the motor and bearings will be the only things you need to buy

One little point of criticism: The dagger looks amazing and I couldn't make it better, but the handle is very round. As far as I know they should be more of an oval shape to make edge alignment easier. I don't know if that's relevant for daggers but I thought I should point it out

I have always had an idea for a Damascus billet. Never tried it dont have a forge. Fish hooks and ball bearings in 1095 powdered steel. Forge welded. Can stripped off. Then forged round. Then cut diagonally half way through very inch or so then twisted one fourth turn. Forge weld. Then repeat by drawing out round with the diagonal cuts 1/4th turn. Repeat this 2 more times. Then forge into a blade.
