I'm floored that you manage to forge a blade, film the process, edit the footage, comment on the result, and deal with all the other aspects of life every week or so! Good work, and thanks!
@JPsBladeworks

It used to be every week but now i take a week to a week and half because the builds are more complex and the editing takes a bit longer than before but it is very stressful but at the same time i enjoy it. So there is that 🙃

Been using epoxies since the early 1980s… 5minute epoxies tend to absorb moisture after a while. That causes them to swell and weaken. If you really want things to last, use slow curing epoxy and do other things while it cures. Also gives you more working time so you don’t have to rush your handle assembly
@JPsBladeworks
@JPsBladeworks 3 ай бұрын
I've switched over to G-flex epoxy and it's way better. I'm extremely happy with the results. It's a 10hr dry epoxy with a 75 work time and works great.

Run rabbit, run, man with big knife is coming for you! Being able to visualise the screw threads makes for a stunning visual and the different grinding levels shows off the handmade perspective of the blade. There is something tantalising about hand crafted knives.

Nice job getting the billet out of the can. I’ve never seen one pull out that nicely. Usually regardless of prep, the smith needs to put in some work to get it out of there. I also love that surface grinder. Nicely made.

I remember doing some carving in wood shop class. I got a little ambitious and over cut and area. The teacher must have noticed my frustration, said A man who has never made a mistake has never made anything. I think this is particularly true and people who work in crafts and art. There are the technical things that need to be learned and the muscle memory. No amount of reading and study can develop muscle memory. You just have to do it repeatedly. You are running a business so if you can save an hour using the press, I say do it. The other thing you point out is the stress on your body. It has to stay in good shape and last you until you retire. So use PPE, and use any mechanical method you can to reduce the strain on your body. I watched a video the other day of a guy who made bearing ball Damascus, without steel powder and he nailed it. If I can find the link I will post it, the thing I noticed was he spent a huge amount of time working the canaster before opening it.
@JPsBladeworks
@JPsBladeworks 7 ай бұрын
If im not mistaken Hans did the bearing balls with no powder and got a gorgeous blade from it but i think we are using different bearing balls or something because i was pretty sure the process i used shough have worked but oh well ill get it down someday or maybe ill have to get in contact with him and ask him how he did it.

10 seconds in & I'm majorly Impressed, as another comment stated, I'm crazy super Impressed the start to finish process. Being a one person show must be tough, but as I'm continuing to watch I'm just in awe. I sent a link to family & I said Wow! You have to watch this VID, it's shot & edited like a professional, you know Forged in Fire'ish. What's better is watching the process, each & every step had purpose & though I'm unfortunately not able to learn the trade I still find it absolutely incredible that something from the ground is manipulated by processing then physically by a human. It's a dense material to work with, anyway I probably sound goofy gushing. I enjoy what you're putting out to the world. I Absolutely Love to learn which is the icing on the proverbial cake, you....to me it sounds & looks like a production did all that. Watching you entertaining for all the right reasons. Thank you

Nice knife! I love the deep black core. You're right about those orange liners really popping. Would starting with a thicker core material have helped in allowing you to keep more of the pattern material on both sides? I'm thinking thicker core means better chance of having core material near the edge when you grind the bevels. I don't forge, but I do watch a lot of forging videos. I appreciate it and yes the tools make life easier but deep down i am also a child that wants to fill his garage with toys until i cant fit anymore in. Then i want a bigger shop to continue to fill it up.

It came out great! I am curious as to why you use white spray paint and not white out, but I guess they do both still have titanium dioxide.

White spray paint is easier to apply and its easier to give a thick even coat

My first time watching your video. I like to commentary and how you explain what you're doing. If you want rabbits, I have a few dozen running round my yard. I stand corrected, this is the 3rd video of yours I seen now.

What’s with coffee? Beautiful knife. Where do you get a small press for the forging???

I built my own but if your interested in a small one I'd check out coal iron works. They have a 12 ton press.

yes... the orange liner looks great..also it probably minimize 'vibrations' in the handle as you cut & hack on hard stuff..??..would love to own such knife..,i"m really into nasty knuckle protection integrated on the handle...US army knive style...

Does it have to be white spray paint or can I use and color? I was wondering I never did canister
@JPsBladeworks
@JPsBladeworks 6 ай бұрын
It has to be white. The pigment used to make the color white is what does the work. Its the same concept as the white out they use in forged in fire. I just use spray paint because it is easier to apply a nice and even coat.
