The E-MOTION RUDDER DRIVE is a revolution in Yachting.
The Hanse 315 e-motion rudder drive was developed in cooperation with the partners Jefa and Torqeedo and has an electric engine, which not only replaces the diesel engine and its components but also the complete saildrive.
A 4 kW electric engine and a folding propeller have been integrated into the rudder shaft. The advantage of this system is the significantly improved maneuverability as well as the emission-free and almost silent propulsion.
The integrated engine in the rudder directs the thrust into the respective direction of the rudder. The extended rudder angle of 100 degrees in total allows the Hanse 315 with emotion rudder drive to turn from standstill on her own axis - forward and backward. When
docking and taking off parallel to the pier, the stern of the yacht can be pulled precisely to the dock, which is particularly advantageous in strong winds and narrow ports.
More advantages of the new Hanse 315 e-motion rudder drive are:
- 100 kg less weight
- No opening in the hull for the saildrive, less drag when sailing
- No noise
- No diesel smell
- Low maintenance (simple system, less moving parts)
- The batteries can be recharged at the dock
The system consists of two to four lithium ion batteries, which propel the yacht at smooth sea and 4.5 knots up to 30 nautical miles. At lower speeds, the range is extended significantly.
The maximum speed is 6.1 knots and thereby not much less than with the conventional diesel engine. With the integrated quick-chargers, the new Hanse 315 e-motion rudder drive is fully recharged in just 3 hours and ready for the next emission-free adventure.

Style, class and a certain degree sex appeal. Can we expect virtues like this from a sailing yacht?
In our opinion: absolutely! We focused precisely on these properties during the development of the Hanse 315. With high-quality equipment, a performance people have come to expect from a Hanse and with a confident style that leaves no questions unanswered. With you and most likely also among your jetty neighbours.

This shows promise. I like the fact that there is no through hull shaft or sail drive . I would still power this with a diesel generator but I like the maneuverability provided.

I am 71 years old and thru my life I have had motorcycles, cars, motorboats and sailing boats. Electrical components is what have given me the wast majoroty of problems on all of them dispite very good maintainense. Small diesel engines have been perfektly reliable and reliability is on the top of my list when it come to boats!

Pretty awesome! Integrate solar and wind charging, and additional battery capacity for blue water distance cruising, and you have a new customer! I hope this is a sign of things to come (soon)!

I like it. I wish Hanse or Torqeedo would produce a more technical video. Installation details. Access and maintenance. A video of a real motor, propeller, and rudder instead of a 3D rendering.

Having sailed quite a bit on a Harbor 20 with an electric motor, it was generally fine for getting in and out of the marina. In the H20 top speed/power lasted for 10 to 15 minutes or so and then the electric motor propulsion started to wane pretty quickly. In calm weather that's not a problem. The motor can push the boat pretty well for a while. Against a strong current or headwinds is another story. There were many times that the motor quickly became useless as the power dropped off. I would bet Hanse has thought of that and their system doesn't have this issue, but it is something that I would be worried about if I was considering a Hanse with this system. The maneuverability it offers looks pretty sweet though.

If you have to have a gen, all the advantages are cancelled out. Now you are paying for diesel, maintenance and wearing out a huge bank of batteries which cost more than diesel fuel ever will.

it needs two when sailing so the skipper can always be on the upper side when keeling, there are boats with a rotating one ,but its not that better ,it still takes much space because of the mechanism and you cant put anything else in that area because it needs space to move side to side

Sailing is all about using the clean power of nature for propulsion. For people who want to eliminate stinky, polluting internal combustion engines from their lives, preferring to use 'stored wind' to get their yacht out to where using 'live wind' is feasible, this E-Motion Rudder Drive system is brilliant. Drive to the marina in an electric car and then navigate out of the harbour with an electric drive in a clean-green yacht. That yacht is less costly, lighter and more spacious for not having a diesel engine or thrusters. Sure, it's not as practicable for blue-water passage making, but not everyone does that. :-)

Any idea of the capacity/construction of the battery? 4KW is quite a lot to power. Unless they are using "tesla grade" cells I'd be concerned that the cells might be a fire risk, if left charging while away. I'm assuming a pack of around 30-40kWh? So a $20,000 pack?

Lagoon catamarans tried e drive years ago for cruising , and failed miserably . Obviously this technology is great , for limited range cruising , on lakes , where You return to base marina , or port hopping .

I belive we have to clarify who this boat is made for . With a 30 foot lenght , it is obviously not an ocean cruiser , but it is ideal for lakes , especially here in Europa , where use of internal combustion engines are rarely alloved on inland waters ,with a 135 cm shallow draft , it is a go everywhere wessel . I own one here on lake Balaton , and it is perfect for this task . ( mine is diesel)

It would be great to know what the motor draws so you could plan on packing a portable generator for emergency power. Even if you could only run at a percentage of full throttle, you could still greatly extend the range by carrying a generator for that once in a lifetime emergency at sea. It would be beyond awesome if Hanse could integrate lead acid batteries into the keel bulb - cheaper than lithium and little or no weight addition due to the replacement of iron in the bulb with massive heavy batteries

Reading the comments is refreshing, this system will not work for over nighters or serious cruisers. But great for a small, light around the bouys racer. Maybe one day teck will advance enough for cruisers.

Im just wondering what the estimated payback time would be, given the price of other electric drive systems I would think that the payback time would be extremely long especially if you start adding renewable recharging. Nice gimmick for marina queens though.

Love it but wish they would life the steps and show the engine compartment without the diesel in it. I also wonder how tough the rudder is to hold up to forces after a long period of time.

One problem you may not have thought of is when you get back from criusing etc there is no hot water for a shower as the diesel heated up the water on many models. Is there any rudder judder?

I thought a catamaran with engines in each hull was the best thing, cause apart from unmatched maneuverability you also have a fast and flat sail boat :), did you say peaceful time on board. This is a good option for keelers though.

Without an engine driving an alternator and no visible solar panels - how does Hanse supply power back to the batteries?

I imagine that at the present time, you need to plug the batteries on the dock. However, 30 miles is more than what most of the boats will sail during a normal day of cruising.

I wonder if the Rudder shaft and bearings etc have been beefed up sufficiantly enough for the entire displacement of the Hansa to be pushed from that point! I'm quite frankly shocked that Hansa haven't fitted a skeg! ..and what would be the max displacement for this system to be of practical use?

The rudder shaft is taking on much higher loads while sailing. The 4KW engine is nothing against a reach course with gennaker and strong gusts.

It doesn't look like it. You can see at 1:00 that the blades appear designed to feather back when not under power. This reduces drag of course, but can't regenerate energy under sail.
