What would be your choice all round comfort from the Hanse 460? or fast cruising with style from the Dehler 46sq

I think it is very odd of Hanse to release the new 460 and the 46SQ at the same time. They just announced the new 510 so maybe it would have made more sense to release a new 420 Hanse instead of the 460 and then let the new Dehler 46 fill that size range. I guess the issue is that a new 420 will probably feel larger than the Dehler 46sq :) It also looks like the performance difference isn't as great now... in fact, if the speed polars are to be believed, the new Hanse 460 outperforms the old Dehler 46. And they didn't change the hull for the 46SQ. Especially in light air. Maybe that inverted bow and forward chine really does create a slippery wetted surface. Obviously not comparing the D46SQ Race version. :)

@@matthewholland5974 The Dehler range will always outperform Hanse no matter the models, a lot is to do with the difference in hull shapes but the Dehler's are meant for sailors who want speed and flexibility in their sail plan as well. I think that they are just working on making the Dehler range more comfortable and luxurious. I think the thing to do is for us to pester our man at Hanse so we can have a head-to-head sailing review with both boats, something I will put to them tomorrow it would also make for some great KZbin videos. What do you think?

@@SVTONICBoatWives Sounds good! Maybe too late but I would be curious to know why the H460 polar speed guides show better/faster performance than the old D46 (no polars not posted yet but I don't believe the standard rigging config changed). Thanks!

@@matthewholland5974 I spoke with them today, it is a bit odd but they do say the new 460 is faster and more stable than the old 455 not that that was a slow sailboat. It was unanimous though that the Dehler 46sq is much faster so I am going to nag them to do a head-to-head test;). On the question about the arch if you want to keep the traveller don't buy the arch as it will just give you a standard german main system and you will lose performance. I hope this helps and if there is anything else we can do just let me know.

I like all the safety , hand holds you show different features. attachments for sails. I like the way you do your walk around thorough is good

Would love to see more of both boats. We have a 2017 Dehler 38 and absolutely love it but would like some more room. Could you find out if the ‘arch’ option has an integrated traveler? That would be awesome to still have the performance with a safer cruising cockpit!! The renders seem to show a single point of attachment but the 3D configuration online tool clearly shows a track running across the top of the traveler. Looking forward to more!

Traveler on the Cockpit floor as an absolute liability people seem to be tripping over the thing all of the time. zsometimes with really unpleasant results - for example, rare, but it's happened, headlong down the ruddy companionway - thankfully not me, but I've been close. For a Cruising Boat, it needs binning. All the best. Bob. 👍

Thanks for the great walk-throughs. I was wondering if you could comment on the quality of the builds. I always thought Dehler was a bit better but are they about the same now?

Putting the hulls and rigging etc aside, my impression was the overall build quality of the Dehler was much better. They are made by the same manufacturer but there are differences. I will be posting a full walk-through of each boat soon.

We have a Dehler 38 and we initially were drawn to the Hanse features/space/value but we ended up going with the Dehler as we felt the build quality was substantially different. Plus we wanted more performance than the Hanse could offer. I haven't seen either boat in person but after watching a number of awesome videos, like these, it seems that the quality and performance gap has lessened. There are a few minor things that seem to indicate the D46SQ quality may have lessened... simple stuff like the engine side covers are now face mounted as opposed to being flush, like the old D38. They also got rid of the very cleaver 'Dehler Door' which allowed the sink to be separated from the shower/head. It really opens things up on our 38 and now you get to see a toilet facing you as you open the heads door. I guess it is a forward facing toiler, which is certainly nicer but I would have preferred the old setup. Same for the v-berth head. That just feels like a cost cutting change to me. Some of the grab bars are carbon (plastic probably) and some are stainless on the interior... see, like an odd choice. And what in the world are you supposed to store in the weird space above the stove? Is that meant for a microwave and if you don't get that option, you have a shelf that will spill everything out into the galley. Would a door have cost too much? This all may seem a bit harsh but we are in the market for a 46 in the next few years and I was pretty set on the Dehler 46SQ but now I might lean toward the Hanse 460. Again, I haven't seen them in person and I do know there are substantial difference between the overall assembly of the Dehler and Hanse but I do think there are some misses on the new 46SQ. Bummer. Maybe they will work out some of things in the next couple years :)

@@matthewholland5974 Both had fallen right off my "might buy" list, but the changes to the Hanse may have sneaked it back on. Though the, the Customisations available thanks to Clipper Marine, the UK Agents, have oretty much glued a Bavaria C45 to the top of the list so far. seeing a close look at the below waterline Hull having such a nice design, it isn't a hard Chine Flat bottomed punishing Slammer, and the Halcyon Yacht delivery of one from the South of England to Cardiff, confirmed everything implied by that below waterline design, and have pretty much clinched it for me as a good liveaboard Ocean Crosser with my Customisations and Sail Plan- radial Challenge 9.11 battenless Main with 3 reefs and full Blue water bells and whistles, 3 row stitching Seams with UV proof thread, Lighter Cloth but similar spec 125% Furling Genoa, plus a Polyester laminate, no blowing up Mylar membrane, plus Furling Offshore Reaching Code Zero to fill in the wind angle gaps. From Ullman Sails, actually a Lot Cheaper than a good Suit of Quantum Sails Purchase option from Hanse for their 418. A lot of the Hanse Options are Very expensive, surprisingly. Of Course skip the Challenge sailcloth, andvyou can get massive savings on Triradial Dacron Main and Genoa for Bluewater sec, that with regular valeting, should hold up well for 20 years or so. I like the look of that Offshore Cruising Laminate Reaching Code Zero though. I only Cruise though, the 1979 Fastnet Teagedy finished me with Racing, just as I was starting. I've fallen for the Dehler if removing the track from the Cockpit is an option. I've had a couple with that before, plus been on other boats with it, and for Cruising the Damned thing is an absolute pita. Sharp 90 degree corners on the Hanse Ouch ! Hi Bob, if you have the arch as an option it replaces the main track so you then have a german Maine system. Thank you for watching and there will be a full walkthrough of both sailboats coming soon.

Small suggestion, please less focus on storage/stowage. We all know that there is storage. What we often don't know is the more technical stuff, sailing ratios, how is the wiring, what is redundant, what are safety features and show them and so on.

Dealer great be,ow deck on deck too much Racer Racer, no Cruiser should have a mainsheet track in the Cockpit, and the Shoal Draft is an absolutelutely insane 7ft 1". Goodbye getting close to huge areas people want to cruise to, hello lots of unnecessary keel grounding. Frankly they're bonkers, for only marginal at best tracking benefits for tracking when cruising, and maybe a slight advantage when Racing. The Hanse 46 is a much improved cruiser with a safer Cockpit, and the great reduction in sharp 90 degree furniture corners below deck not wild about the galley, but the Island position is a bit of a help, and the Shoal Draft is a fairly acceptable 5ft 9", though an inch or two less would be even better. Why any Cruiser would think Deep Keels help them in any way, Frankly beats me.Insight- a Macwester 26 Bilge keel has a Draft of 2ft 9" , and we never had a problem tracking across the Irish Sea and Back, we always got where we wanted to go on it. Sailboat Racing has a bloody lot to answer for in my honest opinion. If I could get a 45ft Bilge keel version of that boat I'd buy it like a shot, probably with a 5ft Draft, and cheerfully Cross Oceans in it - but not with a linear galley(on the 26, I got to dislike a Linear galley very much). sorry for the rant, but important Cruiser needs are being forgotten by too many builders. ☹️

Nothing wrong with a good rant, it's refreshing. On this occasion for cruising, I am in total agreement with you, the Hanse 460 has been built for holiday sailing in the med and after walking around and breaking many bits on this brand new boat just by having a look I was very disappointed, as I think many new owners will be when their boats show up. In my humble opinion, this is a charter boat through and through, the Dehler, on the other hand, is much improved the quality of the finish is still there and I think it makes a great racer/ cruiser. I wish like you that boat manufacturers would make these boats a little more long-term cruiser friendly but I think we will just have to pay more money to buy a good second-hand HR oyster etc.
