This really gets you thinking about how versatile quarterstaffs, shaolin staffs and bo staffs truly are, they're fast, resistant, unpredictable, they can incapacitate you in one strike if it lands in a specific spot, and in the hands of a proper wielder, it's impossible to get near them without getting hurt

My bojutsu sensei once did a striking power test on one of those precision force gauges, and although the bo staff broke, It exerted 3 tons per cubic centimeter. It doesn't even need to be in a specific spot, you get hit hard anywhere and you're out

Absolutely. I just practiced it with my mop and broomstick, and let me tell you. These techniques are badass.

I'm critical of some techniques, firstly 'telegraphing' moves and second the whole point of the Bo is its length, which they are not using. If its maximum reach - in their hands - is the same as a club then use a club. Using the Bo with 2/3rds extended takes more effort for control but then again it is known as the King of Okinawa weapons for that reason. Early Bo were heavy and cumbersome but they hold a modern lightweight with old hands.

Our organization does use the bo with 2/3 extended which we refer as the long bo format but usually in the middle to advanced kata and their respective sougou kumite. Here's a demo of the long bo format about 13:28 into the video - kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y2Knin6KYpV9baM

I feel you with the telegraphing moves. The primary reason why I am hesitant to practice martial arts is the fact that you know the opponent's moveset, the legal and illegal moves, and (in smaller schools) the opponent's style. In the real world, you know nothing about the other person's abilities and skills. Basically, most martial arts are poontless to learn if your primary reason to kearn is defense. They can now only help with discipline and physical health. It really is sad that it has come to this.

Are Bo techniques a separate martial art or part of existing one? if they are part , which ones? I would like to master the Bo.
