I’ve owned a couple of Hanwei swords that were very well made for the money. This particular sword looks to be extremely well made. The thought of using powdered steel to forge a katana, and then folding it, is pretty exciting.

Recently bought a secondhand Kami katana from an iai teacher, the tsuka had been rewrapped by Fred Lohman (RIP) a while back in black tsunami ito, and I think it was also given a full wrap of black same. The original owner also had the upper 1/4 of the saya wrapped in rattan, so it's definitely been fussed with. Didn't cost me much though, and overall I'm happy with the blade, it's a cool model from many years back (even if the hamon etch is a but rubbed off/there's a tiny chip in the kissaki, I'll probably polish that out and give the blade a hybrid polish at some point).

Awesome, I've been hoping you would get around to making a video about the Kami as it is one of my absolute favourites in the Hanwei catalogue. I managed to snatch one of these for around 1300$ a couple of years ago. I remember seeing it for the first time around 2009 and fell in love with the red Saya, but the price tag of and I do believe it was 2000$ was scary at the time. The diamonds on mine are done worse sadly and theres some rattle which boggles the mind considering the price but it's still a fine Katana and I am so happy to own it - it's my highest end and the pride of my collection.

Just followed the link in the video description, and I dunno about this one. Although it's not currently available, for a $1500 sword, I expected a better looking Saya, and I think the ito could've been wrapped a lot better too. The tsuba, though, looks great, and the habaki is awesome too.

If you were considering testing some cold steel swords I'd like to see the cold steel competition cutting sword. It's a great cutter but it's durability remains somewhat unclear.

I was never a big fan of this looks wise, it gave off a bit of a cheap s/s impression. The only Hanwei I have left from that era now is the Bushido, it's a pretty beautiful package but I've never liked it's weight so it's not had much use; that's no bad thing though. Sadly it's the only sword I have left from a much larger collection but life priorities change!

Oh sweet! This sword definitely has the it factor. Very impressive appearance, it would probably look badass displayed with your armour. Quick question for you matt, I got myself a hanwei Raptor nanbokocho but it came without a saya... (I got a good discount) I was wondering if you could recommend a vendor? I only managed to find a place on Ebay so far, yanli sword. Any experience with them? Or can you point me to a good place to pick up a saya? Yanli seems legit but I have a 30" blade so I would have to customize. Any advice would be appreciated. Get well soon brother! EDIT: yanli sword not yinli
