I am also fron the Rhineland (Düsseldorf) and I happen to own a Hanwei Rhinelander. To my taste, the sword was far too blunt when it arrived and it feels quite heavy and slow in the hand.

@@bansheemopar this is Oberrhein calling; you DEFINITELY must own another Rhinelander sword - mine is quite light and agile, also good sharpness out of the box. I mean "sword sharp", not "razor sharp"... which no sword ever was in history.

Hi Matt, I actually stripped the grip on mine down and rewrapped it. The core on my Rhinelander was wood though I cant say for other hanwei pieces. :)

My William marshall pattern welded is wood and I found zero issues with it. But honestly their pattern welded models are their deluxe models so yeah they take extra care in them lol.

@@Plata-ori-plumbu it looked ok. The riser in the grip of the rhinelander is actually just carved into the wood for some reason, cord wrapped then covered in leather. My hanwei tinker actually had a cord wrap underneath the leather when I removed it (I seem to have an issue with hanwei leather. Lol) but I honestly preferred to the feel of the leather. Far as looks go, on the rhinelander I didnt like the shade of wood, and without the cord and leather wrap it had a very nasty ledge where the pommel met. I actually ended up using a rasp and sandpaper to remove the riser then cord wrapped it and put new leather on to get rid of the gap. Also I'd advise against taking hanwei swords down to the bare wood from a safety perspective. I've dismantled a handful of different models of theirs for various reasons and every time I was quite surprised with just how soft the wooden cores of the grips are. I think the material is adequate, but it needs the support of a wrap I feel for it to be used safely.

There was a period of time around 2015-2017ish where they were going off spec for their swords. I have a tinker bastard sword from that period and several from afterwards and the difference is night and day. The bad one has a smaller tang and an overly chunky blade. From what I understand they had some internal issues and Michael Pierce (guy who designed the swords) had to chew them out. The one from the Fiore film was probably one of those if I had to guess. I use Hanwei blades from the newer stock in my sword projects and they have held up to a lot of abuse. Not excusing poor quality control, just saying they are usually fine for whatever that’s worth.

They guys at Arms & Armor and the Oakeshott Institute said that many later swords, the slot in the cross guard is oversized. And they are filled with shims or glue to keep them in place. The famous "Moonbrand" as I recall is like that. The theory is that hilt pieces were being made in mass, separate from the blade. And so they were oversized to fit any size of tang. I seem to recall that they had one sword who's cross guard slot was so big it could slide down the blade!

Generally speaking whenever ressources and production techniques drop below a certain margin of cost there's an incentive to market products for mass consumption and produce them in the most cost-effective manner possible. I think this is why early European and traditional Japanese swords tend to be produced with religious-like attention to detail, while average late-medieval swords tend to follow the lines of "does it stay together? Is it reasonably balanced? Is the edge serviceable? Good, that'll be X, God save the King".

As far as budget swords go, the Rhinelander is my favorite in terms of design. It comes closest of pretty much any sub-500 sword on the market to what I would commission custom if I had the money. Though I would have loved a writhen-style/twisted pommel in place of the very plain “doorknob” look, like you said- like on the ubiquitous “Erbach” sword. I will say that both edges of mine sit down in the guard, and I see less of that lip between the pommel and grip. But that’s the nature of cheaper production swords- somewhat of a gamble. Agreed, rather a Matt(e) finish then the shiny leather. Thanks for giving it a look.

Nobody take this out of context. This is just personal opinion. In terms of pure aesthetics, this is my favorite style of double edged blade. The profile taper, the length of the fuller, everything about it is perfect. The only thing I don't like is the pommel. I'd prefer something a little less spherical and more faceted.

Great review! Hanwei does have several western blades that look great. This is one of them. Always nice to see good reviews on them, like yours! Well done! I believe the Rheinlander is one of the blades that's frequently been used by the Zombie Go Boom gang to "kill off" Ivan heads hehe. Personally I would love to see you do a review on the Hanwei Revolutionary War Hanger one day! It's one of their swords that I always wanted to get my hands on myself. It just looks nice and I love infantry hangers and short swords for enlisted men and NCO's. Cheers from Sweden!

I did near identical testing with my Windlass 'Scottish Cutlass' and was distraught that it started loosening up. One session, like you had done. It was my first real, modern production, sword. Luckily it has a threaded pommel, so I was able to repair it. One plus to threading I think. I can secure it near indefinitely with proper adhesive I imagine. If it was peened I'd still have a loose, demoralizing, blade that made me regret my purchase every time I'd pick it up.

This is the first sharp I ever got. Got it 6 or 7 years ago I think. It's still in really good shape. I used to use it at ren fest to cut pumpkins (big ones, thrown through the air in a nice arc toward me). Never had any trouble cutting really well with it. I always wiped it off and put a light coat of oil on it after use and it's had 0 issues. Definitely not the best sword out there, but I didn't expect it to be. I wanted something around $200-250 USD that I felt wouldn't fall apart and would be well constructed. It fits the bill. The scabbard is indeed cheap plastic but it is snug at the throat and protects the blade.

Just another view. I have this sword, had it about three years. Mine came sharp from about two inches from the hilt. The blade sits down in the hilt with no gaps, same goes for the pommel. So it looks like quality can differ from sword to sword, which I'd expect with a low to mid range blade like this. To sum up. Mine is nice and tight after a fair bit of back garden cutting.

I've owned a few Hanwei swords over the years, and like Matt says in his review, they have a pretty good price/quality value. My brother and I had a pair of their blunted longswords that we used for sparring without having to worry about accidentally stabbing or cutting each other, and they handled very well and were great for stage combat and the like. His point about the hilt is one complaint I do have about Hanwei swords. After enough contact in fights, one of them did end up with a cross-guard that was a bit loose.

For wobbly guards, tie a bit of string been the gap, really tightly, and it will cinche up the fitment. This works on peened pommels as well. My Hanwei Tinker has a wood handle and the wood compresses as the guard is hit, making it smaller and smaller. Eventually the screw on pommel doesn't tighten any more and the string works well to tighten everything. I use a polyester string wrap to replace the pealing leather handle wrap as well as tighten the guard. Cheap and quick.

Well I got one and I have the pommel issue but not the issue of the blade not being flush to the crossguard. Haven't done much stress testing but I'm guessing it won't have the lose guard issue. So there seems to be consistency issues.

So I have this exact sword which I purchased from Kult of Athena in late 2017. It may be because KoA does their own quality control, but my blade is actually sunk into the recession on the guard quite tightly. It also may have been hand-finished, because it is a smooth transition from grip to pommel (they abut, the pommel doesn't have a lip or cup shape) and the leather wrap doesn't sit proud at the seam as your sample appears to. Pommel peen doesn't feel rough, but brutishly executed. Fuller isn't even between sides, but less so than your's, and the grip definitely isn't great if you have large hands. Its a one-handed sword if I'm hearing gauntlets. Overall, it seems like they changed the way they manufacture the Rhindelander, as mine differs at several points, and the quality control appears to be slipping.

I would think the reason the lip or ridge is there on the pommel is because the grip is wood and when it was turned to size it was not dry enough. Then it shrunk wile waiting to be put on the sword. The only way to fix the production problem is to kiln dry the grips before turning to size. A less likely but just as possible is the leather was originally supposed to be thicker but they opt for thinner leather now and are not about to retool just for that. Matt now that your guard loosened up you should have tried peening the tang to see if you could fix it. The ugly and proud peened tang may be a blessing when you hammer it more yourself ? I would love to see an attempt at giving that tang a good whacking in a video. It is after all a type of abuse /maintenance these swords of lower price often go through. The crooked guard is probably a result of tang and blade shoulder grind accuracy which is very difficult to achieve without CNC I

I've read accounts of Cortez's conquistadors have swords that disemboweled & severed the upper arms of opposing Aztec Warriors in the. 1520 expedition. Most of the swords that I have tried to identify from that era (Rapiers, broad swords even the rather pointy arming swords) seem a little light in the cutting department for that. Could this be the type of swords the contemporary writers were referring to?

One specific question, Matt: Did you notice the Fiberglass-like scabbard core scratching up the blade? I know that Hanwei doesn’t use a really fussy finish on their steel, but I do notice new, non-uniform striations every time I pull the blade from the scabbard w/o special consideration, which has me resting the Rhinelander outside of it most of the time. Is it just me or does fiberglass, especially without smooth finishing, have the potential to do this to hardened steel? The scraping sound of the draw was what made me notice and learn the material in the first place. And does this have implications for difficulties keeping a sharp edge on this sword if it’s getting drawn & sheathed a fair bit?

I just wrap sinew into the gap between the grip and the guard to tighten up any rattle. Works for the most part, and is a good option for antiques I don't want to alter but I still want to handle.

I think the main concern with you getting the product for free is that the makers knew you where going to do a review on that instance. So they could easily have given that sword a lot of extra attention that they're not going to spend on the sword they send to other people.

First thought, this would make a terrific cavalry sword for my own mounted training here in Colorado, but you put paid to that. Can battlefield armor levels have slightly decreased per capita in the period due to increased overall size of armies?

The gradual decrease in the prevalence of armor was a multi-faceted development, but the armies being larger was not the issue. The prevalence of armor actually increased throughout the middle ages and sharply so in the late medieval period, which happened concurrently with the increase in the size of armies, but was not related. The introduction of relatively cheap plate armor became possible with the invention of blast furnace whereas the increase in the size of armies was consequence of feudal realms slowly beginning to consolidate into pre-modern nation states which had better economic capabilities of fielding and campaigning with larger forces and were less reliant on the personal relationship between the vassals providing the army and the liege to whom the service was owed. Indeed, plate armor was standard issue for cuirassiers, pikemen and shock infantry in the 30 years war which was in the 17th century which was pretty much the most massive conflict in the entirety of Europe since the Roman empires height. Rather, the development of musketry tactics and lighter muskets was what ultimately begun to suppress armor. The Dutch and the Swedes were in particular responsibility of advancing these exact developments.

I just bought one of these from a friend for $50. Some edge damage due to having probably been used for Ginsu-type testing, some pitting toward the point, cross guard is a little loose but the handle's okay. I got it to use with my backyard pell because for $50, it's a lot cheaper than the average federschwert and may last about as long. Dunno. Time will tell. I do hate that stupid ring on the guard. Matt, I appreciate what you've said about the blade's quality and about the sword's potential for customization - your review influenced my purchase - I feel that I have not thrown away my money.

As to it not being a replica, it kind of is a low budget one of an original. I know of one existing antique, one could argue this is based on. Though the original is a bit more ornate. The original has a "fluted" scent stopper pommel, and the side ring is "fluted" in the centre as well. Though I cannot remember how similar the blade is, as it is quite a while ago that is saw the "original"

Matt, I'd recommend a 1-1,5 inch thick wooden ring to place on top of logs/tables preventing bottles to fall off before striking them. Easy, cheap and works like a charm ;) Thanks for this review- just got one of these -starting my work on the grip and new scabbard (core seems plastic, and blade keeps jamming going out and in - rubbish)

Absolutely brilliant review! My only concern with hanwei swords is that quality control issue. The guys making those swords have to do it quickly so some details get overlooked. But the plus side is that these blades are great so can be upgraded with better handles and a little bit of filing and fitting. But hanwei are pretty good and I'd still recommend them

This is why Archeologists love bored people with a tendency to write everyday occurrences down. One journal entry from 1510 about an argument between a freeholder and a servant about the shape of a blade, written down because that was the only thing to happen to the person that day, could offer so much insight.

A way to get a nice edge polish for cheap, if you aren't doing a lot sharpening. Go to a thrift store and pick out some high grain ceramic dish. The plate won't hold up super well, it won't be the highest polish, it won't be very easy to use, but for a dollar and a bit more work, you can get a pretty nice result.

I am curious what your opinion is of the Hanwei Tinker Pearce line of swords? I have their sharp Norman sword, and I have no major complaints about it at all. It handles very well, cuts nicely, and in the testing that I've done with it, its held up beautifully. It would be interesting to compare that series of swords to the regular Hanwei's.

Shame about the crossguard loosening like that. Would something more flexible like hot glue be better than epoxy which might crack? Would a quick etch with vinegar take the odd color difference off the guard? Just a thought.

I wonder would it be better to have a narrowing hole in the guard, that way it would be always well fitting. Afaik ill fitting guards are not that uncommon in the originals. If I understand correctly blades were often made my professionals and transported, but the guards and pommels were ill fiting as they were mass produced or made by those locals who put the sword together. Are you sure the fullers ending in different point is a durability issue. I would say that is likely rather going to increrase the durability as there is 2 smaller stress point than one big. (I am a recreational bow maker, so I assume I do know something about stress points, that being said, I am not sure about this myself either.)

Very nice sword. Do you have any experience with swords from Armour Class. They have an at least superficially similiar 16th century hand-and-a-half sword on their website that looks interesting.

A question for Matt. To keep costs practically identical, would you rather they pay someone hand peined the pommel, or hammer guard on and have a screw pommel?

I don't know about Matt, but unless you intend to replace the blade often a screw-on pommel makes little sense.

Shame about the fit and finish on your sword, Matt. On the Rhinelander I own everything has held up with no gaps after 4 years of use. Perhaps they’ve cut corners on newer models?

My bro owns this sword, the tip sucked and it would roll in the scabbard. So we had to file down the tip and and redo it, plus it was dull so we fixed that.
