Very nice. Great camera shot on that last one! :D Hello from Houston! I practice Kim Jin Pal Hapkido (same lineage as Jackie Chan), and we do all the same falling techniques, except the JUMPING back fall. I'd really like to do that one, but too scared to hurt my spine! :D You can see Jackie doing ALL of these crazy things in "The Young Master" (1980) at the end with the big boss fight. Jackie goes crazy, doing flips and jumping back falls and side (sky) flips, just to show the bad guy how much he can take it.. how tough he is.. i.e., how good his UKEMI is! For those who don't know, Hapkido is a eclectic hybrid mix of many martial arts, mostly Japanese, as the Korean founder Choi spent 30 years in Japan before the war. He brought back so much to Korea: Karate, Judo, Aikido, and more, and created Hapkido. These rolls and falls you can see mostly originate from Judo and Aikido. In fact, the Korean word 'Hapkido' pretty much nearly translates directly from 'the Japanese word 'Aikido'. The art of falling, rolling, or being able to take an attack or energy in a passive or an absorbing manner, and recover successfully unharmed from it, is called 'ukemi' in Japanese, and 'nagbeob' in Korea. Your partner in a technique training, practice or demonstration is usually called your 'uke'.

the techniques are not meant so that u fall and would not harm yourself. like come on, on concrete, it will definitely hurt. but the technique is to help reduce damage to ur body rather than free falling. this way you fall, but not damage your entire body and still be able to stand up. btw, on the soft mats, it still hurts as well lol

actually I think there are a lot of similarities between the falls. All martial arts that teach falling techniques, generally follow the same path. There might be more emphasis on some parts (softer falling ie. without hitting the floor or harder falling ie. with hitting the floor) but I don't think there is anything typical hapkido-ish or aikido-ish or judo-ish etc. etc. about falling. Clowns in a circus that take falls or stunt men also use the same techniques.

hmmm........I'm not sure. From what I see in your video, Hapkido has a lot of "High Flying" Jumping Breakfalls (because of your dynamic high-energy throws and pins), I practice Aikido and by contrast our breakfalls seem to be "Middle Standing" kinds of Jumping (because of our standing pins and thows that use very little energy while in a fixed and strong stance), while again in Jujutsu (or Judo) they do "Low Grounded" Breakfalls because of their ground-based pins and submissions that are fluid.

I think I'm with DanMartin on this one --there is a difference depending on soft or hard (energy/ki/chi) application/usage. Definitely. For example, Aikido use a lot less effort/energy when rolling. Heck, they use a lot less energy for MOST things such as avoiding, catching and joint twist/throws. :D But anyway, You will definitely notice a difference between the "high energy" jumping/falls and rolling when the Hapkido guys are contracting their body (almost into a ball like a somersault) as opposed to the Aikido guys maintaining form (and more soft controlled gracefulness as well). I'm a Hapkido practitioner, but watch Aikido ukemi videos, and I tried rolling like them in my class one day, and the teachers noticed and tried to correct me, saying "more power!". LOL!! In Aikido, a basic roll is making a slight curve with the body when leaning slightly forward with one arm/hand, and rolling in almost a perfect crescent moon like circular shape with ease and grace. Where in Hapkido we can adjust at multiple levels (high, mid, low) and roll/recover with any level of energy (hard or soft) but most of the time harder. We learn how to TAKE IT (ukemi) on a hard level, as opposed to evading or absorbing & redirecting the hard away so as to maintain soft control like Aikido. Hapkido is one of the most hardest, most powerful martial arts. We make it count. But it does incorporate a mix of the soft techniques, principals & philosophies as well. And it's a great mix. Remember, Hapkido includes the practice of Kendo as well, and we use the hamaka just like in Aikido, Kendo, the Samurai, etc... :) I really like the graceful AIkido ukemi. Here is a great short demo: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r6mXeH-frrWNsJI

@sregi22 As far as forward and backward breakfall rolls, I know from having done those on pavement that it's basically the same cuz you roll like a wheel and energy gets absorbed that way...as opposed to being concentrated on one part of the body when you hit the ground crashing on it flat. Not to mention the momentum picks you back up and you get to end up on your feet again. Just when you are learning don't do it on concrete obviously.

The technique on the side falls needs work... From my own practices the ankle is not supposed to hit the ground or it breaks if you do it on concrete.
