Good evening folks! Notice anything different? In this episode, we’re taking you deeper into our journey to Maine, making it feel like you’re hanging out with us. Do you like this laid-back style (longer video and more personal) or do you prefer the fast-paced, polished vibe? Your feedback is super important-let us know in the comments! Hi Hanks. I grew up in that area. Something i think a lot of people don't think about is that, when those roads were built, there was no such thing as cars, huge trucks, and fifth wheels. The roads were made for carriages pulled by horses. Also, there are a lot of amazing state parks and campgrounds outside of the most touristy town in the state. People who live there tend to camp in a beautiful, quiet area and go to a place like Newport for a day trip. Also, after Labor day it calms way down. And it's too bad you didn't tour a couple of the mansions. The town owns most of them, and they are really neat to check out inside. As always, thanks for sharing. Like this format.

Thanks so much for the insight! You’re totally right. Many of these roads that we have driven on in the North East have been the nicest roads we have ever been on. We’ll definitely have to check out some of those state parks and campgrounds next time. Bummed we missed out on the mansion tours. We appreciate you watching and are so happy you enjoy the new format 🙂

Another suggestion for a hike in the Newport RI area is Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge, if you like quiet. This peninsula has a trail all along the water's edge and is much less congested than the Cliff Walk.

I live in Mass. moved here 10 years ago. The people in New England area (including Rhode Island) are very protective of their trees. Around 1900 there were no trees; they had all been cut and used for heat and ship building. Some of the backroads around my area, have paved around trees. People go to town meetings to protest the town from cutting down trees.

Remember New England is very old and historic. Originally horses used to carry travelers hence roads were not required to be wide. Some roads were widened however not all could be widened due to private property.

I lived in Newport for a year - I’ve never seen so many cars with front end damage in my life. They park alongside the streets to the corner - so people pull out blind. My guess is many individuals at the campground are military attending Navy War College in Newport. So many military have campers and often when going to a military schools that are less than a year - they won’t move their entire families to the location but stay in the camper for the duration. Most military bases have campgrounds or campgrounds near them - it’s cheaper than renting an apartment.

I hope that you will do a video of your overall experiences with all the different parts of the country, The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly! Two years ago I took my 34 foot motorhome towing my car into Newport. I kept looking for a place to park the MH and explore in the car. A few bad decisions later I was on a 2 way street that was only one and a half cars wide. I got out of there unscathed but barely. It's a gorgeous place with lots of history. Smart move on your part to plan ahead and park the trailer then explore in the truck. I like this format but don't forget to be your own awesome selves. Safe travels.

My plan when I retired (14 years ago) was to RV to every national park and monument. But the more I read about traveling in the east, the less I wanted to go. The color change and historic places would be fascinating but the people crowds, scary driving and cost of RV parks are more than I want to take on. There is so much out west including BC and Alberta that I will never see it all. And the boon docking is great. Thanks for this video, it reaffirms my decision to stay in my own lane... The West! I'd love to see more videos like this one. ✌☮

One small comment on the RV park is that most of the sites you past on your walk with a lot of outside decor were seasonal sites, their not traveling like you guys. They park it once for the season and that's it. Many RV campgrounds are leaning toward seasonal sites and thus the rest of us can sometimes find little room to spend a night or two. Visit eastern West Virginia. you will find that most main roads here are very well maintained and trees are trimmed back so as to not create an overhead obstruction Always love your videos. You are the greatest.

You visited my hometown, born & raised, at the WORST possible time! The Season. This is when the locals sequester themselves until the tourists go home. You started the Cliff Walk at the wrong spot (should have entered at the Forty Steps) and I can't tell if you made it around Ocean Drive! You need to revisit at the end of September/beginning of October. It is a completely different experience, calmer and quieter. Visit The Breakers (you walked by it on the Cliff Walk) to understand why/how Newport gained its fame. Visit St. Mary's Church built by immigrants brought over to build the mansions and the place where JFK and Jackie O were married. Eat at Brick Alley Pub. Visit Touro Synagogue the first/oldest synagogue in the east. I could go on and on. There is so much more to Newport than what you experienced. Please don't judge based on this experience alone.

I’m originally from New England. Went camping as a child and took my family as an adult. Choosing to take a huge 5th wheel along the coastline will be an exercise in frustration. These state have very little actual coastline and real estate is precious. Roads are narrow, trees are everywhere and no one wants to take valuable land to make a campground that will only be open 6 months of the year. Find campgrounds inland and use the truck to sightsee. This is also the same when you get into Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine. Get away from the coast and enjoy the beauty and history of New England. (And by the way, Boondocking is NOT acceptable, so don’t bother trying)
@HappilyEverHanks2 ай бұрын
Thanks for the advice, Dianne! Navigating the narrow roads and limited campgrounds along the coast can definitely be a challenge, especially with a big rig. Though I get that your rating system is specifically particular to your sensibilities, I will ALWAYS rate the Newport Cliffwalk a 10! Part of this is likely nostalgia related to the fact that prior to the site becoming a tourist attraction, it was a fabulous hidden gem that wasn’t overly regulated by safety ordinances. My favorite memories include heading to the feature known as the 40 Steps to dive off the rocks into the most perfect cooling waters of the bay!❤️

Thanks so much, Paula! It's awesome to hear that you love the format and our videos! We totally get your nostalgic connection to the Newport Cliffwalk-those memories of diving off the rocks at 40 Steps sound incredible! Thanks for sharing your favorite memories with us. We truly appreciate all your support in watching our videos 🤗

Hey, Kyle and NayNay! We met you guys at Tri-State RV Park in Matamoras, PA. We had the New Horizons 5th wheel across the road from you. Dawn and I grew up in Somerset, Massachusetts and understand your feelings about Newport. When you go back in the fall for leaf peeping, check out Fort Adams State Park in Newport. I think you will like the vibe and stroll along the ocean much better than the crowded Cliffwalk. Enjoy your New England adventure! Can’t wait to see more videos!

Yes please, keep posting these videos of your northeastern visits. Hubby and I are originally from those areas and are planning to full time RV for a year, next year. We have family to visit up there and you’ve given us food for thought on our maximize rig size. Also your channel would transition great to sailing and travel. Gone With the Wynns did it and it’s one of my favorite channels F/T Sailing is our next adventure after RVing. The thought of running into the Hanks on the high seas sounds fun! If it’s in your hearts to do it, give it a try 🙂

Hi guys, I love the longer format videos. I also am very familiar with Newport my wife and I go there all the time we’re actually going again in a couple weeks. I would definitely agree Newport as beautiful as it is , is definitely not RV friendly. You didn’t mention any of the bars and restaurants down there. Can’t wait until next Thursday. 😀

Yes, this video has more deets. Thank You. Sailing is an *on your toes and being extra alert,* while moving through the water and especially when the weather turns stormy. I follow a couple sail-folks that gives it to viewers straight, (good and not-so good events). These type of YT sharers are the best, like you two. (Solo opinion here). 🏆

I prefer the more personal video where you show the campgrounds, the surrounding areas along with their history and explore the cities you visit.

The state itself is beautiful and the whole south coast is beaches. Newport is really busy with tourists so if you were looking for quiet that’s probably not the place. Prices for restaurants and bars reflect this popularity. Not sure when you were there, but the traveling elephants were there in the latter part of summer right on the cliff walk. Narragansett, Galilee and Jerusalem are also nice areas to visit.

Life long rhody res here… you went to the worst possible and most expensive town in our tiny state during the worst time of the year. The last place you want to stay or even visit in RI is Newport during the summer. Everything is a tourist trap for ppl like you who didnt “do their” homework. There are many way nicer parts of RI then newport and yes while still crowded cause it is tourist season still here for another month or so you should have checked out campgrounds near wakefield or westerly which is still right on the water and watch hill has awsome historic mansions… most famously taylor swifts massive one. The northern part has the better campgrounds with nice lakes and ponds… you def missed out on what our tiny state has to offer. Too bad.

Looks amazing to me! I was once in RI for a brief business trip. Flying in over rolling gray ocean. Would love to go back! Keep in mind, these are towns settled before vehicles. Founded in 1639. Walking, horse, buggy are best!😂

So fun to see Newport! It's been 20 years since I was stationed there (spent lots of time at that Walmart, being right outside one of the base gates). I miss surfing at Second Beach there! The mansions are truly impressive. I wish I'd toured one while I was there. It's such an expensive place, especially in the summer! Thanks for sharing your time there! Glad you got to go sailing- it really is THE thing to do there!

You have to check out the Water Fire in Providence Saturday night. You would need to get their early as there is usually a lot of people for the event. You might also want to get some of the best Italian food in Providence's Atwells Ave. (Federal Hill). "Providence, Rhode Island was ranked among the Top 5 Little Italy neighborhoods in the country along with Boston, San Diego, New York, and Philadelphia. " Travel & Leisure on September 1, 2023
