My channel contains videos on the enneagram, non-duality and creating our own reality, and to sum up the gist of my perspective: 'Life is a game, remember it and enjoy it'. Since making my channel my focus of attention has shifted to positive psychology, and helping build a happier, freer and more compassionate world. I also love Life Theming (www.theforgottengame.com).
I'm not a certified enneagram expert; making these videos was more of a fun project for me, so I can't promise that everything I say about the types is spot on! I hope they are helpful and enjoyable vids though.
This is part of a sequence of videos that demonstrate a way for each enneagram type to move back towards their natural state of being: joy, freedom and vitality.

If you look at all of the comments for this video you can easily see they are 5's! Just look at those grammatically correct and thoughtfully constructed paragraphs!

I'm a 5w4, and I think some fives disconnect from their bodies and feelings because there was no physical or emotional affection expressed in their childhood. There's an overwhelming load of grief in the body and emotions, so they have to disconnect -- for a time -- to survive. I don't know "why" this helps -- because it's not a word-based experience, it's wordless-- but when I do yoga or liturgical dance or brisk walking or just household chores, it's like I become whole, I find my lost half. Fear and sadness just evaporate. Knowing & learning stuff is *awesome fun, and I love it and don't plan to quit, but the other half of confidence is found in the body -- it's a different *kind of knowing, really, that doesn't "seem" like knowing because it doesn't come through words and isn't explainable in words. (Not much, anyway ;-) -- but being a five, I had to try and "explain," you see ;-) )

Deborah Nickerson I'm also 5 with 4 wing, and got a lot out of Riso/Hudson's books on this subject. Their take on Fives feeling overwhelmed by both parents, searching for my niche, etc.. I always felt like an outsider, observing etc. Then I realized I was obsessed with Understanding Things, and gradually learned that nothing would be off limits to my knowing. That led me to learning, wisdom, being artistic (reverbnation.com/stargazer21, etc.) and been happy ever since--understanding myself, and others, hence learning to love life. Cheers

There is a bonus for being an independent/loner 5 - when the going gets tough, we are survivors. We have learned to think independently. A skill set that is greatly lacking in greater society. I have seen countless friends dissolve into desperation when life handed them an inevitable "curveball". They need others to tell them what to do -- for approval. 5s have the fortitude to think inside the box and outside the box. Our minds are limber. We may not act in accordance with what is expected BUT when the unexpected arises we act. You definitely want us on your side during a zombie apocalypse. 😉

I'm a 5w4 and I don't get paranoid if I don't have all of these answers. When I was younger I used to but now that I'm older and have a lot stronger grasp on how the universe works I realized that I can let go and live in the moment. What I also really love about being a 5 is that you understand that all that you will ever truly need is already inside you. I instinctively know everything deep down its just whether or not I'm listening. What you're describing is a very immature 5.

Wow I'm definitely not as essentric as most 5s, but basically I am a 5. I especially can relate to feeling seperate from everyone else and being WAY too much in my head sometimes. I feel sad when I'm too much like this. At the same time I am interested in so many topics and things. But I am more self aware than some people you are describing, and am hyper aware of other people at times and their reactions to me

As I type 5, I'm glad I discovered this at an early age (23). It took me delving into the enneagram to realize that my relationships matter and that I do indeed want a romantic partner, something I had convinced myself I didn't need. I hope to translate what I have learned about myself into dating and hopefully find that special someone.

As a type 5 INFP this video really hit home. I have always felt very disconnected from society because I felt that a distant study of it would reveal an ultimate truth that would allow me to reason with logic the problems that people face in our society. I think this is driven emotionally from my dominant Fi and has led me to spend most of my childhood researching science and philosophy, eventually getting a masters degree in electronic engineering while doing a lot of psychedelic drugs. I have always been aware of this deep connection with the reality that we encompass and believed that sharing a sufficient understanding of the material world would allow me to communicate this but you soon find out that this is not possible. Now I am completely hermitized and have shut myself off from society which feels so bad when with Fi you want so desperately to connect with people. But in understanding this I am slowly reconditioning myself away from this unhealthy variant of type 5 which i suppose is a type 5 thing to do in and of itself and reconnecting with old friends and family that I shut myself away from for so many years.

This is not bad. Near the end of this when saying "opening up" to the world is healthy, I quite agree. My tendency has always been to challenge and question nearly everything, because in my youth I realized how differently I saw many things from my peers, parents, siblings, seemingly everyone. I did not understand--yet--that I was seeing into things deeply, at times completely bypassing conventional modes of perceiving/conceptualizing things, and wondered why it was only me who saw things that way...it was gradually alienating until I grew into self-confidence in whatever direction my instincts directed me, and feeling more at one with the universe.

I love how you explain this. It's so easy to put type 5 into a nerd/scientist stereotype and completely disregard our eccentricities. Also, just "being in the moment," appreciating being an extension of nature and the universe, and not having to explain everything away is such an important lesson to learn. Although, we can go both ways. We can max out our obsession with learning and knowledge and really stubbornly hold on to it for some time, until we figure it out, and find this sort of transcendent level of deep understanding. The latter really sticks with you for the long run, but it's not always viable because it is very stress-inducing, so it depends on context.

+mechanesthesia As a Five/Wing-Four I'm curious about how the 'deeper level of understanding' for you is stress-inducing--I find it very comforting and consoling in the avalanche of phenomena I've attempted to be the eye of the storm in the midst of. Do comment..
@mechanesthesia
@mechanesthesia 8 жыл бұрын
Yeah for the most part it is comforting to be able to see things from a "big picture" point of view. But sometimes you just have to get shit done and there's no time to get lost in your thoughts analyzing, theorizing, synthesizing your thoughts and experiences into some gestalt... I see so many possibilities it's hard to really go through all of them and pick the best most efficient one... I notice I spend way longer than the average person to make decisions and just settle on something. The older I've gotten and been forced to deal with the mundane "real world" the more this has gotten in the way. But it doesn't happen all the time.
@KennethDonnellyStargazer21
@KennethDonnellyStargazer21 8 жыл бұрын
I've experienced the same for much of my life, and I've always been lost in the Big Picture, sometimes missing crucial details...but I've learned to embrace that handicap, since I can go laser-like into anything I focus on--If I choose to. Still, there's no other Type I'd rather be

+mechanesthesia I know exactly what you're talking about regarding being stuck in big picture mode, and having difficulty actually moving forward with practical matters which require dealing with particulars. I actually feel like I have trouble thinking linearly. I imagine my thought patterns as wavefronts, ie everything is happening all at once, which is just how my imagination describes being stuck in big picture mode. Writing instructions for others, for instance, is brutal for me because it's so hard to figure out where to start, because everything is interconnected. Gah!

5w6, I appreciate a lot of the detail you put into the video. One important subtlety I'd like to mention about our eccentricity, it often comes first from an interest in some odd thing, combined with a *lack of caring* about fitting in. To some, the perception by others as an eccentric is a bonus, but not the main driver. More "I like this, and I don't care who has a problem with it," less "What can I do to surprise others?" To your final point, I found Wei Wu Wei's philosophy of non-volition very freeing, even before learning about the enneagram. I am an investigator, and investigating things is how I have fun. But in knowing that nothing can truly be understood, I'm free to accumulate "knowledge" for enjoyment, rather than being bound to do so for protection.

Coming to grips with, "I dont have to understand this." is one of the most difficult obstacles to overcome. You keep looking for the pattern or the formula that explains WHY and the truth is it doest matter WHY it is. You just have to accept and adapt to the fact that it IS. Thanks dude. This was helpful.

As a 5w6, I have never felt alone. I can just be on my own for week to month on end and just keep thinking and learning. And because there i nobody for me to focus on, I can really hone in and understand everything I look at. I get a solid 6h30m sleep and because i do it so consistently i never feel deprived. I have always had a brilliant mind (have never felt lost in any type of argument). I will always say my opinion, along with any requested proof. I catch on to things without any effort, and refuse to listen when something pointless is being discussed. I would much rather learn about something interesting and useful. I feel sadness when I am hurt, I just only talk about it to people who are willing to open up to me. The only way I will ever truly trust anyone is if they trust me. As a 5w6, I really see the worst in everyone, and am actively thinking up and preparing for worst case scenarios. I find I rarely try to avoid them, unless they can have horrible results. I have a strong will, and never feel insulted when people insult me. If I have to, I list off a dozen reasons and examples of them being a POS / imbacile. That usually shuts them up. I am open to new views, and I just treat others how they treat me. I really see no need to interact with others in person, online everything is easier.

Oh my god! That is soo amazingly ironic that you mentioned Mr. Scruge and related him to Enneagram type 5. When I found out Santa didn't exist in 1st grade, I was shocked and deeply bewildered by the fact that my parents could just lie to me so easily. I must admit it made me feel very unsafe and start to question a lot of things. More than anything though, it just made me feel alone cause it didn't seem to affect anyone else in the same way. I thought about it for a long time by my lonesome. Those are sad memories. Geez and to think I was having that level of thought in 1st grade. No wonder so many type 5s are psychologically disturbed! Tee Bee I wrote a 3 page letter to Santa Claus promising my loyalty and saying that my parents were conspiring to make me lose my childhood. I literally used the word "conspiring" although I misspelled it. I then went on to think further about it and came to the conclusion that Santa does exist but only as an archetype for the Christmas spirit. I think that I still sort of think that.

Wow, yes I've actually been told by ex-boyfriends that I'm "aloof" and have been made fun of in the past and called, "Data" and "Spock" by co-workers. I have a hard time figuring out when guys properly actually like me for who I am. Relationships are so complicated...that's why I love education, music, sci fi, etc...tends to be safer. I'm naturally analytical. I get that ur basically using an anti-anxiety type of cognitive therapy self talk to help us pull out of our anxiety & mind. -I'll try it out. Thank u for this.

Some thoughts: I agree with what you said for the most part Wearing flashy or strange clothing would be unusual for a 5 as most 5's are introverts Their view of the world is much more complex and inclusive imho, 5w6 especially study and question everything in order to find the underlying truth Subjects they are really interested in have great depth and complexity/are unending rather than fruitless and uninteresting Healthy 5's will be interested in a subject or subjects that can help everyone for the better, if there is a better way to do something they are always interested in doing this, developing new ideas or merging a combination of existing methods In time they can become masters in a variety of areas, they specialise in 1 or 2 subjects Historically 5's are the people that can observe reality from a different perspective, they will happily study a subject that interests them for very long periods and in great depth, sometimes making great discoveries that benefit all of mankind I think that early on in childhood they had the experience of feeling incompetent, and unconsciously adopt the 5's strategy of retreating and studying profusely/avarice not seeking material wealth but rather gaining knowledge in an attempt to feel confident/needed and respected Rebelliousness/"going against the system" is much more of a 6 trait Open minded 5's will gladly question everything eventually unearthing truth or new findings which is very healthy rather than accepting everything without question, 5's will most often gladly share acquired knowledge with anyone who is interested This is just some of what I have observed about 5's, and being a 5 myself I think a lot of this holds true It would have been nice to hear more about the positive aspects of 5's and examples of historical and modern day 5's such as Albert Einstein Charles Darwin, The Buddha, Stephen King, Eckhart Tolle, Jane Goodall, Mark Zuckerberg

The beginning of the video was quite accurate, but the rest half was a bit misleading. I think you start describing more type 4 rather than type 5; I am type 5w4, and I noticed some characteristics of 4 in my behavior, for example being in “character “ and subconsciously trying to be different from others. But most of the time, I stop myself with my rational thinking, that comes from being 5))By the way, you as type 4 was in a character most part of this video 😅.

Hi there Joshua! When I first started investigating my enneagram type (now a few years ago) I stumbled upon your video's and I just would like to mention that they've helped me understand what enneagram is all about and I would like to thank you for that. I don't know if you're still 'into' enneagram or if you've moved on to something else but when I watched the video's by Russ Hudson (via The Enneagram Institute) I thought to myself: put those into a blender with the ones Joshua made and; you've pretty much got the bigger picture. It's just a thought I wanted to share. In any case: thanks for making & sharing these! Very much appreciated ;-)

When you were talking about at 18:30ish about not needing to understand breathing. I can't exactly relate to that. I know I'm a 5 wing 4. But but at the time a few years ago when I was at my rock bottom I'd be more at peace laying between railroad tracks, feeling a train scream along above me then to tell myself I didn't need to know something or have someone tell me "You don't need to understand". Not rebuffing, just adding a personal.. internalization of that thought.

What I was thinking when you were saying it's good to tell yourself "I don't need to understand it" ... another useful pattern I find for myself is also telling myself "I don't have to find the solution for it" (cos I might understand it) AND also "I don't have to be the one to implement the solution" (if perhaps I was able to see the solution). It can work really well to rationalize it in this way. Thanks for your video. You're a sweetie.

lmao that one political coment u made really resonated with me. Similarly, i often say to myself, "why do i have to abide by the constitution when i never signed anything stating i'd agree. and even if i had, i never signed anything stating my signature meant anything = P" great video. good acting too. i do wonder tho if i true five would sort of actively dress differently to distinguish himself from the rest of the world b/c to do so would be, in a round-a-bout way, another method of conformism, imo. CHEERS josh, totally would hang out with u gangsta, seem like we'd have good conversations

Yeah this is good. One thing I could NEVER relate to with the stereotypical 5 description: being a "weirdo" in an external way... like having bad fashion sense and being socially awkward/talking about topics people don't care about. I've always been extremely aware of my image and how I come off, my clothes are expensive and look really good on me, they are subtle but bold all at once, my vibe speaking for itself. They encompass my individuality perfectly. And this is probably because I'm an average/healthier 5 but I can talk to anyone about anything, small talk, shallow things, deep things, philosophical things, scientific things, daily events, gossip etc (could be my INTP chameleon abilities and female socialization at work, which I'm weirdly thankful for). It's easy to tell when people are bored. Usually if I have a story to tell, I make it interesting... there's a climax and a point, lots of facial expressions, an assertiveness to it, people are drawn in.... it's not information overload. It's more like "energetically penetrating". Some people like it, some people don't. The ones who don't get tired more so than bored. As far as growth goes... it's not so much being in the moment as it is having and asserting boundaries, and expressing your feelings and needs. It's VERY hard for me, but I've made a ton of progress this way.

As you mentioned, you seem like a healthy 5. You probably have a heavy 6th wing, which makes you more social than a typical full on five, or a 5 with a heavy 4 wing; Artistic, eccentric, emotional and more sensitive.

One of my relatives went crazy because of lonliness. He tried to kill himself like 10 times and now he's over 60. And another is over 50 and has never had a real job, he lives in a house with my 97 years old great grandma. There are about 10 of those people in my family, but the other 8 can gladly call themselves.. "eccentric". Did I mention that 2 of them wrote books?

Im a type five, its not dressing or acting eccentric because we want to stand out from the crowd, its more that we don't care what we wear and don't care what society thinks of us. we research things to prevent our fears of the outside world and the future. research gives us knowledge, which we feel is a parachute in a way for us. also, us being hermit like doesn't make us want to turn to drugs or suicide. the research we do saves us from this as having the useless knowledge we have about anything and everything helps us understand the world and helps us have a mental safety blanket for our fears of failure. the first few points in the video, I related to greatly, but I feel this is not a type 5 video, more of a mixture of a few different types.

Well done. I think I am a type 1, but I could also be a type 5. INTJ PS: Oh dear, the fanciness of style that you just described it is me! Lol. Maybe I am a 5 after all. I research and study models of human development and I love to compare the systems of understanding our psique in connection to the high levels of awareness. These systems are truly my identity rock and nothing gregarious as uses and costumes, families and their activities and so on.

PS2: Definitely I must be a 5. I am in love with my life style more secluded now a days. It is frightening though. But I planned my financial life to be independent like I am now. VERY SELDOM people attracts me. This is a constant report of all INTJs - not liking small talk and carefully choosing with whom they want contact.

I had recently taken the Enneagram and came up with type 1 with balanced wings, BUT I then found that the Tritype existed which made much more sense seeing how I wasn't exactly 100% 1'ish because my type 1 was only two points away from my type 5 answers (with an 8 coming in closely third). I then took the Tritype test (actually while I was very tired, which seems to create an unbiased approach in my experience). My results were 5w6, 1w9, and 2w1. I am also thinking because of how close my 1 and 5 are, they are almost interchangeable from time to time depending on the circumstances of the day in my case. I am also an INTJ. I have to say that I highly relate to the eccentricity (see my photo and my drawings that are my cover photo), but because of the 1 and 2 elements, I tend to have people feeding off of me instead of the other way around. My simple Enneagram results: Type 1 - 13.3 Type 5 - 11.3 Type 8 - 9.3 Type 7 - 7 Type 2 - 2.7 Type 9 - 2.3 Wing 1w2 - 14.7 Wing 1w9 - 14.5 Wing 5w6 - 13.8 Wing 8w7 - 12.8 Wing 5w4 - 12.3 Wing 7w8 - 11.7 Wing 8w9 - 10.5 Wing 7w6 - 9.5 Wing 2w1 - 9.4 Wing 9w1 - 9 Wing 9w8 - 7 Wing 2w3 - 3.6

Out of all the things people have said to me the stuff you're saying is most aggravating. I immediately wanted to reject what you were saying because I need to understand EVERYTHING. WITH MY MIND. Wtf is inner knowing when I can have analysis? Wtf is stepping into my senses when I can live safely in my head? Wtf is fear when I never really notice it? And wtf is love when it always ends in heartbreak? My understanding of the world keeps me safe. So of course I need to understand it.

I'm probably exaggerating. I'm a 4w5 but still. I feel tenderness w/ my 5 b/c I've always felt a need to understand and share these understandings but not many people know what I'm talking about. I've tested as a 5 before, but more recently (after being in a very toxic relationship) I've started testing as 5w6 and even 6. This only happens when I don't have my emotions under control. I feel at my best and most confident on my own. When I begin to become emotionally attached to someone all bets are off. I become an emotional anxious wreck. I am a fearful person, I've had GAD my entire life and I'm prone to panic attacks. I don't know if this makes me more of a 6, because when I'm not having daily panic attacks, I feel so comfortable and I don't feel the need to find an answer, or to over-analyze everything.. at least, from an emotional standpoint. I tend to like to mull over rational things, but the only problem I have is when it comes to my emotions because they're completely irrational and I can't wrap my head around them. I guess I'm both lol. Of course, I won't be satisfied with this later and start to study myself again.

Wouldnt this meditation practice be equally valid for all of the types? In truth, this meditation practice IS understanding, you said so yourself. That is why I cringed when you suggested that we say 'I don't need to understand' as a way to heal ourselves- that is not true. We DO need to understand them. But not through our minds, through feeling them in our body while concentrating on the breath. The practice you described is the same as the one taught by Thich Naht Hahn, but it is a walking meditation. It is used to soothe emotions. I see that as useful for all of the types.
@JulieOwl

What I would say is: I can't soothe this emotion of (fear, sadness, loneliness, anger) through thoughts about it. Soothing and healing of emotions must be a physical process rooted in the body. But during this process the physical mind learns the message behind the emotion and also the solution. That is why the whole practice is a form of seeking to understand.

OwlJulie Hi! You say that you can't soothe your emotions through thoughts about it. That it must be a physical process rooted in the body. That is not my experience. I have found that for me the "soothing" comes both through thought processes and through physical processes, just in different ways. But the end is the same, a feeling of connection with the world around me. Peace
