Through an emotional and inspiring speech, Sandra Meunier, art therapist in palliative care, raises questions about our ability to focus on what is positive and alive, when confronted to illness and end of life. Without denying our suffering , our painful experiences can also inspire us. Let's practice joy every day before it's too late!

Why are foreign talks not treated the same as English talks? It's a two-tier site which doesn't cater in the same fashion for English speaking foreign language learners. For example, an English learner gets audio in L2 and gets two-way interactive subs in L1 and in L2 on the Ted site. As English speakers, we get interactive subs in L1 & L2 but no audio on the Ted site and have go to YT where we get audio in L2 and one-way non interactive subs in L1 and L2. It's not really fair and I urge everyone to make this point to Ted. I contacted them about it 6 months ago but nothing has been done.

Craig H. No, try Rosetta Stone, it says the words clearly and right, use Rosetta Stone, if I were you, I would use Rosetta Stone, when I try it, i saw a big difference between the two, Duolingo doesn't say the words correctly many time and it says them too fast.

Pollyanna... I've always loved Pollyanna! However, I'm uncertain that we're all equal in our capacity to be Pollyannaish. First, I suspect there is some hereditary components to how we respond to stressors... we don't choose our genetic makeup. Secondly, I think to some extent no matter perhaps how you choose to look at things, greater environmental stressors likely will make it more difficult for many of us to remain positive and enthusiastic. There's also questions here concerning authenticity. Could it just be that some people are just simply miserable people? If being miserable is your authentic self, then... Further, although I'm not certain this is entirely inconsistent with her thesis, arguably sorrow is simply part of the human experience too. If the sorrow is authentic, then should one try to put a smile where a tear might arguably be more appropriate?

True about there _might_ be some hereditary factors, but then that's also true for other things, like how athletic we can potentially be. Not everybody of us has the genetics to be a world-class ballet dancer, but almost all of us are lucky enough to have a body that can be athletic, given the training. Same for being Pollyannaish.
