Happiness is NOT the Meaning of Life - Alan Watts

Some of history's greatest philosophers have spent their entire lives writing about the meaning of life. Why are we here? Surely there must be a reason? Many people in western culture believe the meaning of life is to "be happy". Alan Watts has a brilliant way of eloquently challenging this notion. If we were to live in a state of eternal bliss, then bliss would become dull. Without darkness, there would be no light. Without pain, there would be no pleasure. Happiness is based in perspective. Embrace every aspect of life, the good and the bad, and learn to see the beauty in it.

The Meaning Of Life according to: Platonism - “learn more.” Aristotelianism - “be good.” Cynicism - “be self-sufficient.” Hedonism - “have pleasure now.” Epicureanism - “free yourself from pain now.” Stoicism - “be logical, don't suffer.” Classical Liberalism - “defend individual liberty.” Kantianism - “do as you’d have others do (your duty).” Nihilism - “do anything (life has no meaning).” Pragmatism - “bring the most good to humans.” Theism - “follow God’s will.” Existentialism - “make decisions and be positive.” Absurdism - “stop making sense of life. Just live.” Humanism - “Act in self-interest and common good.” Logical Positivism - “life has no meaning until you give it one.” Natural Pantheism - “care for nature.” Mohism - “love people impartially.” Confucianism - “Live an ordinary life.” Legalism - “learn practical things.” Utilitarianism - “you get what you give.” Cyrenaicism - “live in the present and seek maximum pleasure in the NOW.” Just to name a few. What else is there?

After Skool what if their is an actually goal for life but no one has obtained it yet.? For example what if life is like super Mario bros but you only get one life and one attempt and you get no instruction and zero knowledge of the game. I think everyone would die before they see the end. What if the creator of our universe (not God) is being imprisoned and he created us in a last ditch effort in hopes that one of us could save him.?

Christian: Love thy neighbor. Consumerism: Buy this. Capitalism: Free trade. Buddhism: Follow the middle way. Taoism: Follow the Tao. Nietzschean: One must learn to see, one must learn to think, one must learn to speak and write: the goal in all three is a noble culture.

That’s the trick, you know? The meaning of life IS farting. Who doesn’t fart? If you don’t fart, you’ll die. Swell up like a ballon and explode. If you’re farting on a regular basis, you’re a huge success. It’s an evolved thing actually. Most sea creatures don’t fart. Nor do birds. Even sloths can’t fart - getting gas is quite dangerous for them. Think of THAT next time you consider yourself lazy. At least YOU can fart.

Happiness isn't complicated. It's actually fairly simple. The problem is that people chase happiness as outcomes. When we don't get what we want, we feel unhappy. But you can be happy without those kind of conditions.There's the happiness that comes from getting what you want, but there's also the happiness in being content with who you are and what you have. Meaning is what we gain by the way we choose to engage with the world (goals, projects, relationships), and happiness comes from the contentment we feel for who we are and what we have have in the moment.

So where exactly did Alan deny that happiness is the meaning of life? Alan only says that fulfilling all our dreams and desires is not the meaning of life. Because in the end it would be boring, which I agree with. But I don't think "fulfilling all our dreams and desires" equals happiness. Infact I'd say happiness is rather the appreciation of every state of affairs. But yeah, I think we just have two different definitions of happiness. :) To me, happiness is the meaning of life.

I agree with your point of view. In the other lecture he(Watts) was talking about doing things you like doing in life because doing things you don't like doing just to keep on doing more things you don't like doing leads to spending life in a miserable way. So hapiness as a meaning of life means for me that you strive to make your life the most enjoyable to you. And you can achieve this by doing things that give you happiness, things that are deep in your hearth, following your honest and conscious choices. So I don't understand why is this short part of his lecture called "Happiness is NOT the meaning of life". Besides, you truly are the one that sets the meaning to your life and only you can give your life a meaning. You can make this by influence of other things or people but really it's up to you what you live for. This video propably should be called "Pleasure is NOT the meaning of life". Because you need the balance, but I think in the end you want to be on the happier side of life.

Try religion. This life is a test. Believing in a higher power is innate in everyone and ignoring the glory and justice of God will inevitably cause a hole in your life. This life is a test, so ask yourself and ponder over the important questions before its too late- Why am I here? What is our purpose? Who created the universe? What happens when I die? And do your research.

This life obviously has meaning. God created us with an intellect, a moral compass, with belief and with temptations. With different religions and with good and evil. Our job is to submit to his will and believe in him and the last day, and to work towards the hereafter. The fact that we exist and the universe exists is proof that we have been created. The universe had a beginning and someone brought that beginning to life. God did. Take a poor innocent kid in Ghana that lives a life of poverty and suffering then starves to death. And take a rich mafia leader that murders tons of people, lives a life of satisfaction and wealth, then dies happily. How is that fair? It isn't. God judges us all for what we've done in this life on the day of Judgement. You should bear witness to the inner voice that tells you there is a God. And he sent us an instruction manual: his holy scripture, the Quran. It gives us hope and it explains all there is to life. It contains miracles so we believe with both our heart and our rationale. This life is too short to waste boxing yourself into one stream of thought. Once you die there is no return, and no, it doesnt stop there, however comforting it sounds. We don't just turn into dirt and bones. If you ever decide to watch this video, you'll be honored. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aZCtlJShd9WijaM

Three years ago, I had my first meditative "vision", after two years of consistent meditative practice. This was the first time I experienced the complete abandonment of my ego and the realization of what everything truly is. When I woke up, the first thing I said to myself was, "HOLY SHIT! That's what they mean when they say, "All is one"" Honestly, it was an overwhelming experience. I felt vulnerable and naked. I was too afraid to meditate again until half a year later. Mushroom World Love is just a part of our nature so we can reproduce & possibly get a small group of people to defend against predators. That is the whole point of feeling love, it’s beneficial to our survival. Society made the idea of love up because that’s what humans do, we make stuff up because that’s the only way we can keep a system going. You can’t keep a system going by telling the truth but by lying to people. Love is a trick of the mind to promote your survival. But believe what you want, I get tired of brainwashed people not understanding me. And yes, there are people who exist that cannot feel strong sexual love. That’s why they never date or marry anyone. They just don’t have that desire like other people.

Masjid H: Most people, especially this younger generation do not have a glue about what you wrote. Even born again Christian evangelicals think you need to be baptised. Saint Francis of Assisi's prayer includes "in the dying, we are born to eternal life" In this life the personal ego has to become selfless to be able to see and know things that the veil of life covers up. An Epithany. A waking up to see what is real and important.

That's a tragedy more than anything. Granted nothing really matters at the end of the day in even 200 years, so idk why I'm even fretting it, but... just because something seems to make sense doesn't mean it does. I feel more that the meaning in life is to enjoy the journey no matter what you're going through and not sell your soul to live better, because everything is already a curse and a blessing... so to say "I have to do this thing job I absolutely hate for X years to reach this goal that should make me happy" clearly isn't the way. It may seem more tragic that people die when life is still remotely worth living, but the opposite is much so more... Although without rigid expectations and worries, alongside self compassion, I'm sure it's possible to thrive through any tragedy

This life is a test to see who will believe and obey. This isn't our final destination, and I think very well you know that. We don't do whatever we want in this life. We prepare for the hereafter and open our minds to realise the reality coming for us, and to bear witness on the existence of God.

charliesgotaguitar because you would have tried all other kinds of pleasurable lives until you got bored. Perhaps we are talking of millions of different lives. Eventually the only exciting thing would be to live a life where you forget that you are dreaming, so that the stakes seem serious. Perhaps in this life there's no plot already written, maybe everything is left to chance, so you can experience all kinds of lives. Good and bad. Its an interesting thought experiment although it would probably defeat the purpose to realize the truth. Or maybe that is the point of the game?
@Ashiente
@Ashiente 6 жыл бұрын
The problem with that is that you're assuming that the life we're living as of now has about the exact amount of suffering, happines, joy and sadness. It's assumes that over the course of many lives this is the one that has finally ballanced the system. But in any case it's a lot more likely to be one of many iterations in between, not the last one. Also you're assuming that the person who's capable of shaping his memory wont take another course, wich is to erase his memories and go again and again about having a happy life after another. Also somehow he uses the first part of the video as a proof that free will exists, wich is ludicrous. This video is full of holes, if i wanted to keep writing i could go on and on.
@RazorbackPT
@RazorbackPT 6 жыл бұрын
Ashiente I didn't say this was the optimal life or that the dreamers are looking to find the perfect balanced life. The perfect life is probably one of the early ones, full of adventure and joy. Why not just erase your memory and relive the same perfect experience over and over? Because there's no growth there. I imagine that once a life is over you go back to the real world, you get all your memories back and you reflect on the life you just lived before going to the next one. Doing the same one over and over is pointless. And actually permanently erasing your memory would be the same as killing yourself, so it would be better to always remember each life. As an immortal being, after having experienced all the best lives out there, the only way to experience something new would be to try the other kind of lives. Mundane lives, boring lives, even terrible and painful lives. Not even necessarily human, perhaps some are experiencing what it's like to be a cockroach. Why would they choose to do such a thing? I guess that's the nature of infinity, you can either try every possible permutation of experience out there or choose to repeat old ones. I'm not saying I believe this, just that I can see how it would work. Like the simulation theory, there's no way of proving it, but it makes sense.
@RazorbackPT
@RazorbackPT 6 жыл бұрын
Ashiente I just noticed that Alan Watts does mention that we should realise how optimal our situation is. In that case I agree with you. I don't find our situation optimal at all. Only in the sense that I explained previously, it might be optimal only because its new. If we're maximizing novelty then it still makes sense. Not my idea of fun though.

He also doesn't explain why we have the power to change things. Before 1:50 he talks about the dream where we DON'T control everything and some things with risk. He says that could be the world we are living in but how does that make us in control. It's contradictory
