When I learned the fate of the signers of The Declaration of Independence it really gave me a whole new perspective on the meaning of that document and the sacrifice they made to ensure our freedom. They literally sacrificed everything. Nobody teaches this in schools.

Same. You don't appreciate how truly well....revolutionary it was, when you're a kid. Not only are they in open rebellion against their king, risking treason charges and being hanged, they are laying down the ideological and legal foundation for a style of government never before seen on Earth. There have been republics in the past, but none built on concepts like inalienable natural rights, consent of the governed, equality before the law, etc.
