Happy 75th Anniversary to the Pikler®️ House!
In 1946, Dr. Emmi Pikler (1902-1984) founded a Residential Nursery (now known as the Pikler®️ House) in Budapest, Hungary to provide high-quality care to the many children in need of a home after the devastation of World War II. This home expanded on Dr. Pikler's previous work with families. She had developed the understanding that “the unfolding of a child’s autonomy demands both the emotional stability of a caring relationship and the opportunity for the child to experience his or her own competence through independent activity.” (Falk, J. 1986)
In addition, Pikler noted that well-adjusted infants derive joy from their own exploration and experimentation and that adult caregivers experience joy witnessing their harmonious and peaceful development. This pedagogical approach and the research conducted at the Pikler®️ House will go on to perform and transform the way we see infants and usher in a fundamentally new perspective to infant care and education. For 75 years, the Pikler House has continued to be a cornerstone of Dr. Pikler's revolutionary theories.
We present voices of colleagues from around the world that have made a difference in implementing good practices of care with children or have benefitted from them. Their dedication and determination to improving the lives of children transcends cultural barriers. Their humanity and purpose not only inspires us, but also offers us hope.
