It turns out, Merriam Webster is exactly wrong about the origin of the yule tradition! Once again, Christianity shows up to rewrite the cultural history of a people group.

Live in Sweden. I celebrated Jul every 24th December since I was a kid. I never celebrated Christmas though. Hardly knew any christian kids. If they were they never talked about it. Nothing that I understood as christian connected to Jul ever in my parentes, grandparents home or mine. I'll try to keep it that way.

The Webster Dictionary in my phone gives both Christian and pagan reference, though obviously slighted towards the former it does list the origin as old Norse / Pagan winter festival.

❤ I wish I could call in. I had wanted to before about their perspective on the downsides of Stoicism. And what their take on it was. Because they had mentioned previously that they had some thoughts on it and the downsides. Im still curious you guys, if you read my comment. What are they? Love you! ❤

So Yule is an old Norse word for Christmas? Cause those old Norse are so famous for not having any other gods that anyone has ever made movies about or comic books or named days of the week after. Nope, good ol’ Christian boys, those Norse

In Scandinavian countries we don't say "kristmässa" (Christmas), but "Jul". Other fun facts: The Christmas tree is a 14th-15th C.(?) German addition, but much as it may make sense, the tree is not a representation of the world tree (ash) Yggdrasil. In Scandinavia, there were early so-called Yule poles and brooms, being a pretty old custom, probably as protection against evil forces associated with the darkness around midwinter. Santa Claus's look is our farmstead gnome (Tomten), Coca-cola'uped. We do not have Santa, but our gnome still, even if he looks like Santa. However, Tomten is also fairly new in some parts as we had the Yule Goat bringing gifts on the 24th (usually a guy dressed up with a goat straw mask: sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julbock#/media/Fil:Julbock_med_s%C3%A4llskap_tagen_vid_Bolln%C3%A4sstugan,_Skansen_-_Nordiska_museet_-_NMA.0048125.jpg) since at least the 1700's.

So from what I can tell, this comes down to two different words that are very similar coming together. Christianity came to Britain from Rome where the angles, Saxons and Jutes spoke a form of old English where gēol(a) was the word for Christmas day. In the 9th century, vikings invaded and conquered regions in the north such as Northumbria. This was followed by the French speaking Normans coming in who ended up being the dominant force across England. Due to the mixing of gēola and Yul from two different groups if settlers both sounding the same and both meaning a winter solstice celebration, it appears that through time both became Yule and Christianity became the dominant culture followed by the British empire conquering a large amount of the world spreading this form of yule over the pagan tradition to places like America
