Don’t show this to stew mac...they’ll turn that bar into a “useful jig” and price it up at $300

In our gun repair biz we cut a groove in a dowel then place the sandpaper in it and roll it around. Easy and the paper won't move.

Nice tip, I was going to suggest that he use the same size drill bit that the hole was drilled with (by hand). Theoretically, the bit would only cut the old glue.

Pretty sure Stew Mac has an appropriately price sand-papery thingy tool that is expertly crafted specifically for removing only the old glue from the truss rod hole-eeo.

From Leo: Good save. Here is a tip that does not cost anything. I hang a neck in a big trash bag and hang it over a cold air vaporizer from the drug store. After about 2 days, I clamp it up and leave it clamped, warm and dry for about a week. I have done this 6 times and only one re-warped.

I have one of those insanely made Cozart electric 12 string guitars with a Bigsby on it, and of course the neck is in the same condition AND getting the same treatment. Had it in traction overnight so far and will get back to it in a few days. Oddly enough, as if this guitar can't get any odder, it has the 3 pickup and 5 way selector switch like a Fender, but a truss rod access like the older style Fenders where you have to loosen the neck screws and pop up bass of the neck to do any work. Sigh, well, at least there are your videos to help with the neck straightening. Good on you!!!

My telecaster had horrible fret buzz out of the box, it has a small amount of relief in the neck, I only turned the truss rod about 1/8th of a turn and it's now playing well 🙂

Dave, back in the 90's Stew Mac sold a straightening beam that used heat and clamps to straighten necks. The heat was to soften the glue between the fingerboard & neck. The trick was to soften, straighten with the clamps and then let cool before removing. The shop I was in back then had one and it worked. Sadly Stew Mac did away with them.

One of the tricks knife makers use for hand-sanding fullers etc. is to find a piece of wood the same radius as the fuller, wrap sandpaper around it, and sand away. Maybe you need a dowel roughly the same radius as that hole and then just glue some 150~220 onto it. Hopefully you would never need that tool ever again hahaha

Here is my thought Dave (as if you need another opinion! lol...) I think it's valid since you are wasting a string set, and if it should come back to you (we all hope not!!)... Get a cheap set of .014 lap steel strings and overtune it. Put it in a "wood friendly" environment for awhile, monitor the bow as you go and see if that works... It's a more natural approach... It's like "you didn't get to be 400 lbs. in a week you know... (approach) 8)... Good repair Dave! Old neck was nicer.

I have fixed most back bowed necks by simply installing heavier (13-56) strings while letting off the truss rod tension. For the most stubborn back bowed necks I used a large C-clamp and clamped the neck down onto the bench top
@RayBecker
@RayBecker 5 жыл бұрын
If you were to string it with heavy gauge strings and tune each string higher than standard, letting the neck sit like that for several days, would that extra tension accomplish the same result? Good job saving that Tele. That neck is well worth the effort.
@guymandude999

That's a really good suggestion, adding a few heatlamps, but of course, the real solution is to let the wood settle to where it wants to be, then flatten the neck. Again.

Nice work as always Mr. Reaume. I am currently reminded of your moving/hoarding vids as I am currently in the same boat. The wife and I had to move our shit into storage while our “new” house was being built. “Building” went 4 months past scheduled date. Been living with her Dad since Thanksgiving and now we’re moving out of his house and out of 3 storage units, into the “new” house. The reason for the quotations is due to the fact that the various knuckleheads that “built” our “new” house, had zero pride in their work, such that the wife and I are moving into a “new” house that is fucking gooched! Such as life. So much poor workmanship out there. Goooooooooch! Cheers!

DAVE YOU ever HAD a fret board that was like a ski slope? Starts out flat, then tiny relief in middle. BUT at the END its a forward bow or like a HILL all the way to the end. Any videos on this problem or suggestions how to repair? THanks....
@kronos6948
@kronos6948 5 жыл бұрын
If it's as bad as you say it is, you'd have to pull the frets, sand the fretboard as flat as possible, and re radius before reinstalling new frets. OR....remove the fretboard itself, and flatten the side of the neck that meets the fretboard, reattach the fretboard, and then if there's still the same issue, then you'd have to do what I said the first time.

I took a shot at a Japanese made Gumiku Les Paul that had a back bow in it's baseball bat sized mahogany neck. It is tricky to do that sort of clamping with a set neck guitar. I had it clamped up with huge bend and thought the fret board would pop off. I left it like that for a month. I got it back to playable but it could use a little more help. For an ugly heavy guitar that nobody ever heard of it sounds pretty good.

Depending on how bad the scratches and swirls are, I'd return it. If that's not an option, you can polish it like you would a car. If the scratches are too deep, wet sanding with very fine grits before polishing and buffing.

Respectfully, low heat does work for either direction. You don't have to torque it nearly as much with heat. After the heat it doesn't spring back and you can be more precise in less time. I have fixed necks where clamping dry or with steam have failed. Cheers.
