Perhaps the most challenging of all of beckett's plays. Almost anti-poetry. And this has to rank as one of the greatest pieces of acting on film. It must have been near torture for Ms. Worth. Thank you for posting this. Also, in it's way the most tragic of his plays, the most haunting.

Not many knew of Irene Worth except those "in the know". An actor's actor she joins the ranks of performers like Zoe Caldwell and Uta Hagen. I first laid eyes on her as an intense Goneril to Paul Scofield's King Lear in the Peter Brook film. Back in the mid 1970s, I saw a superlative production of Tennessee Williams' SWEET BIRD OF YOUTH. It captured much of the poetic / hallucinatory quality that is at the core of many of Williams' plays but is rarely adequately made manifest. This production really got it . . . in spades. It featured Irene Worth as Princess Kosmonopolis a fading Film star who has hit the skids. Accompanying her as her somewhat predatory, hustler / lover Chance Wayne was the then barely known Christopher Walken. He was great, too and unfortunately -- to me -- his career took his theatrical persona into a different direction then it was headed at that time. I could be wrong. But what a matchup between these two! After seeing that production, I NEVER forgot the utter stage power of Worth. Few performers are that potent. I am so glad I got to see that and I am so glad to have had the chance to see this as it is also beautifully performed. Thank you so much for posting.

I love her--even if I'm too young to have seen her on stage! She's a truly formidable Goneril and at least we have that great, great performance preserved on film. Thank YOU for sharing.
