We pronounce the j in punjab in india, for example you might say zeera for cumin seeds, we say jeera. We call it jarda and so did my grandparents 😊

I get what you’re saying, but as it’s a Pakistani dish, and the word is originally from Urdu, the correct pronunciation is with a “Z” not a “J” 🙂

You’re right, it’s Persian in origin, brought to both Indians and Pakistanis during the Mughal Empire’s reign. For the jarda thing, it’s zarda ( coming from the word zard) ie peela-zard meaning yellow which is the food color commonly used (innicially haldi / turmeric was used which is also yellow)
