"Promise" was wrote and composed by Lay, with the Korean lyrics wrote by Chen (an EXO-M member) and rap by Chanyeol. It was created in 2014 after Kris and Luhan left and was released in 2015 right before Tao left. The song was meant to explain everything that happened to them in 2014 with the members leaving the company and "breaking their promise" to EXO-L to always be one. (EXO's slogan is "We Are One" -- one as a group and one with their fans. So, when the Chinese members left, the rest of the members felt like as a group they broke that promise.) It's an apology to the fans. EXO is saying they are sorry for causing the fans pain and for making EXO-L sad. Everyone had a really hard time during this time period because we all felt blindsided by everything that happened and by the members that left because none of them really said anything to anyone before they decided to leave. Lay, in particular, as the only Chinese member remaining, had an even harder time because he not only was the only foreign member now, but he had an immense burden with the fact that he had to straddle the line between his loyalty to his country and his loyalty to EXO and SM Entertainment. Lay has always been very grateful for all the opportunities that SM has given him in terms of his life and career, so he always wants to be loyal to EXO and the company, but he is constantly having to defend his loyalty and reassure fans that he has no intention of betraying them the same way they felt the rest of the Chinese members did. As the song says, EXO promises that they will always protect EXO-L and make them smile. And then with the rift between Korea and China, Lay has had an even more difficult road to navigate because he was no longer allowed to participate in activities with EXO. So he has been away from the group for more than 5 years now. However, he is still working really hard to make sure that EXO-Ls know that his separation is not by choice. The only reason he is keeping his distance from the rest of the EXO members is because of the rules of the Chinese government, and yet, many people still see Lay's absence as a betrayal of his loyalty as an EXO member. So he is constantly struggling to prove people wrong, while also following the rules of the Chinese government, which, until recently, discouraged him from even mentioning his relationship with EXO or anything to do with Korea. To navigate these roadblocks SM has found ways around them, for instance with Lay's solo promotions. Because Lay was not allowed to promote in Korea, as you have seen, SM found a way to promote him as part of EXO's storyline by partnering with him to release English songs and albums and to tie his MVs in with EXO's story. Everything EXO does, including several of Lay's solo releases tie into the fact that he is a member of EXO -- it's SM's way of making sure that even though he might not be able to work with the members right now, that they still make sure to show fans that his storyline and presence as part of EXO is still really important to both Lay and SM. But no matter what, Lay always makes sure to find a way to show fans that he is, and will always be, a member of EXO -- he is always supporting his EXO brothers, even from afar. Most recently we were able to see Lay back together with the rest of EXO when Lay came to Korea to be there for the day that D.O. enlisted in the military. (He literally flew to Korea the day of D.O.'s enlistment, filmed his "Honey" dance practice video, met up with the members for a couple of hours and then flew back to China.) He always works hard to remind everyone how important EXO and EXO-Ls are to him. However, as you know, in the last few months, the tensions between China and Korea have started to let up and the Chinese government has rescinded their ban on China and Korea working together, so we are starting to see our Chinese idols working in Korea again. For example, Lay has recently been talking more about EXO on Chinese programs and WayV, NCT's Chinese sub-unit has actually been appearing on Korean variety shows and doing activities in Korea. Before this, WayV as a group, was not allowed to be associated with anything to do with Korea if they wanted to be allowed to promote in China. However, WayV even released a Korean version of their song, "Turn Back Time," which is a first for them. Also, after almost 6 years, we have seen Zhoumi, one of Super Junior's Chinese members actually back in Korea working alongside his Korean Super Junior members and he has released a song, "Starry Night" with one of his Korean members and the song has both a Chinese and Korean version. And we have finally seen Lay working with EXO again on their song "Don't Fight the Feeling." So I take all this as a good sign. You should check out the "Promise response song" where some EXO-L fans took the melody of "Promise" and wrote their own lyrics that reflects the response to EXO's message in "Promise." I think Tao was there when they performed PROMISE on the EXO'luXion stage in Seoul. But he couldn't appear on the screen. He was about to leave EXO and his leg was injured. Halfway through the performance, Tao made an L sign. Suho hold back the tears before. But when he saw Tao, he cried so hard. I will never forget that day. I cry every time I watch it. We have passed through that difficult time, and it is strange that we still go through that fucking hard time. I am still here with them. And I will be here until I die. I really love Promise, it's so special. "We Are One" that's EXO's motto since OT12, but 3 of them left, they broke their promise of being always together as one. That's why in the song, you'll hear "mianhae" quite often which means sorry. They made a new promise though and the song Promise tells us to believe in them again. They know how broken we were when 3 members left and the hardship they've gone through. The song's written and composed by Lay alongside Chanyeol and Chen, Lay's the only Chinese member left and will stay with EXO until the end, the song that they wrote shows that EXO-Ls are very important to Lay. He made the promise through the song. They made a promise.

Yeah, live performances of Promise always gives me goosebumps, especially Chanyeol’s rap, that he wrote, and Lay and Chens parts since Lay wrote it and Chen helped with the Korean lyrics….That performance really kills me because that’s when Jongin starts crying and the fancams from next to him really kills me… I always assumed that Cosmic Railway was about being reunited with loved ones after death, but like meeting in the next life type thing too…. I've been a part of this fandom since the debut of EXO, and its really amazing how we've seen them grow up and become this amazing group of talented, kind and humble men but also I've grown up alongside them, back in 2012 I was only 13 years old, now im 22 and I still love them the same maybe even more. I truly believe the relationship between EXO and EXO-L is more than just Artist/Fan. EXO and EXO-L gave me a family, a safe space, a home. For me, I feel that the lyrics of Cosmic Railway can be related to Lay being unable to promote as actively in the group, having to go back to China, I'm not 100% certain of timelines, but I think that the album this is off of was released around the time when Lay had to limit his promotion with the group, so for me the lyrics, about meeting again someday, hits me hard cause I just think about how difficult the members must have found it when Lay was (if I'm to dramatise) 'locked away from them' cause politics ruins everything. I don't actually know what exactly influenced the song, maybe it was as simple as being for the Japanese EXO-Ls in a celebration of how long they had to wait before EXO could have a concert there, but for me I just think about Lay and the pain and frustration they all must have felt, not being able to be together as much! 🥲 my heart. Promise. This song will always make me cry and all the emotions come flooding back. Chanyeol's rap is so powerful and emotional it just makes me cry. Hearing I'm sorry just breaks me... they didn't have to apologize but they did... this song always reminds me that they are really like a home for me. I just don't think I'll have the same connection with another group - don't get me wrong every group deserves fans that feel like family but for myself I'm not sure if I'll ever find another group quite as family to me as exo.
