There’s this web series here on KZbin called Carmilla and I think it a modern kinda take on this story
@KiKiStarling Жыл бұрын
@@bozieduble8541 in answer to that: there's (relatively) recent scholarship that the book is based on actual letters a woman wrote a doctor about her desire for another woman. Yes, the novel has dubious vibes at times because the white dude who published it turned it into a vampire story, but in historical fact, it was probably just an experienced lesbian having some influence on a young queer's awakening. Any sexual vampire story (Dracula or Buffy included) has complex politics around sex, but I don't see that as a reason to disregard the overt lesbianism to this highly influential book. Or the importance of recognizing historic queer stories, even modified by non-queer tellers.

I actually don't mind this theory but the story of Dracula was inspired by a ruler "Vlad Drăculea" known as "Vlad The Impaler" he struck people on spikes for days and also was rumoured to drink blood He had some odd hobbies indeed... Anyways I never intended for this comment to be such a big deal and honestly, I don'y care which one was the inspiration foDraculala, if there's been multiplthenrn this one is the one I know best and the one I'll stick with. You're free to argue but at the end of the day, we have no proof of either as long as, Bram Stoker didn't mention it.

At lot of things inspired Dracula. While the name comes from Vlad the Impaler, I'd say most of the behaviour doesn't match at all. Most of that's coming from xenophobic stereotypes of eastern Europe that existed in the 1890's. There's also the question of how much of the theming came from Bram's own sexuality. But it's definitely the case that Carmilla has some impact on the story.

@birmagustafsson5807 Жыл бұрын
Yes, the author Sheridan le Fanu based the two women on his rather sickly and weak wife and friends of her. He loved her very much but she died young. Bram Stoker on the other hand had a very impressive and strong minded wife, so his female portraits were stronger and more independent, and he had a lot of show business tactics when writing that le Fanu didn't have. Camilla is more a parlour drama, where Dracula is like theatre, and both books mirrors their makers rather good. Varney the vampire came before them both, though, and was a series in a paper that went on for years, based perhaps on Byron, and very melodramatic.

Beautiful artwork but, the story doesn’t sound romantic at all, more like a tragedy. The reason why teens are ill-equipped for complicated romantic relationships in the first place, and some grow into adulthood objectifying love interests, believing they have some entitlement to them. I don’t play around with dangerous ownership themes (your mine forever) in relationships. It’s just a strange, and unhealthy mindset, regardless of gender of sexual orientation.

(I made this comment as a reply to another comment here, but I think it's interesting so I'll share it separately!) So, a lot of queer stories back in the day were only allowed to exist if they portrayed homosexuality negatively. What this effectively meant is that you could write the steamiest, most romantic gay love story as long as you ended it with one or both of the characters dying/being punished somehow for their lust. It MAY be the case (though I'm not 100% sure for this particular story) that it was indeed just meant to be super gay, point blank, but that it was forced to be "homophobic" near the end. The bury your gays trope didn't come from nowhere.

This is at least the second time I'm watching this and it took this second watch for me to realize that this is referenced in the game Destiny 2 with the Karnstein Armlets exotic (an exotic being a powerful piece of equipment that has a special perk not found elsewhere) - basically, they're life leeching vampire gloves. If you get a kill with a melee attack, they return health with a perk called "Vampire's Caress" (on the base design, it has glowing claws that appear only on activation of the perk), and the flavor text on them ? It reads: "You are mine, you shall be mine, you and I are one for ever."
@justasleebylilguylittlesle14962 жыл бұрын
Here's the attatched lore: As you test the armlet, a regal voice sounds in your mind. "Listen! I made this arnlet to help you in your quests. Will you help me in mine? "I remember a woman from my first life. I remember she was mine, my love, my wife. And I was hers, her love, her wife. I remember nothing else except the hole in my heart. I live in hope that she, too, has been reincarnated somewhere on this new Earth. "I built this armlet with a neuromech trawl. It will scour whatever mind it touches, flesh or machine, for any hint of my beloved. The trawl will drink power to feed you. And if anyone you touch has seen my wife, the trawl will know. If, only and ever if, I have remembered her truly."
