WoW!!! First, to Lisa: what an amazing generous person you're are. I am a bead lover / hoarder, and you've set an incredible example for me... If / when the time comes for me to stop beading, I will look for a worthy person to pass my stash to. Speaking of worthy... Alishia, I've been watching your videos for 2 years now (since I started bead weaving), and I love, love, love your tutorials. You are so talented in both designing and teaching! Your generosity of spirit and your humility makes you so deserving of these wonderful gifts. Thank you to both of you for being in this world!

I have been on both sides of this. My late husband was in the hospital for @ 3 months before he died, and I told 1 of his nurses that I made Christmas ornaments that I give as gifts. Well one morning , went to his room, and there was a TON of heading stuff waiting for me! I thanked her profusely for the gift and told her I would pass on the things that aren't my style. Well a young lady I met at a bead store where I shopped, had recently gotten in to counted cross stitch. I packed up my cross stitch patterns, canvasses, and embroidery supplies and loaded up my car to take it to her and took two trips to gift it. Mainly because it was heavy, and back could only handle a few boxes myself! Receiving is nice, but to be able to give is the best! The look on her face was all the thanks I needed.

Aleisha, I've only now had the chance to watch this. Those wonderful gemstone collections at the end were most likely from faceted gemstone parcels that JTV used to sell. These were their signature items for many years, though recently (the past couple years) they have not been able to offer them, as worldwide gemstone demand has changed (more competion from overseas for colored gemstones). This competition has increased the value of your collection! JTV sold these gemstones individually, or in small parcels of a single gem, but when inventory time came around, used to gather up whatever small quantity of each lot was left over, take it out of the individual packet, and dump it all together in a big bin. It literally looked like a pirate's treasure chest! They would then gently mix them up, and scoop out a mixed parcel---a treasure hunt!---weighing (usually) 50, 100, or 200 carats. I bought a few of these parcels from JTV about 10 years ago, and those gemstone trays as well. My collection looks a lot like the one you inherited! The wonderful person who sent them to you would have gone through her parcel (or parcels, probably more than one there), and separated out by color, and perhaps size or cut as well. She placed them in those trays, labeling those she was fairly sure of. (By the way, the only way you can TRULY know is by testing with gemological equipment, such as a refractometer, and various other devices.) Some of these collections were better than others, with a higher proportion of higher-end, larger, specialty cut, or unusual gems (relative to common quartz-family gems, such as amethyst and citrine). You may be the recipient of such a parcel! I noticed several containers that might be tanzanite (or, it could be iolite, still a lovely gem). If it's tanzanite, wow! Despite having the deepest mine in the world for colored gemstones, production has fallen severely, and good quaility stones are just not found the way they used to be. Tanzanite is only found in that one location, and it's practically mined out. Some of those tangerine orange stones could be spessartite garnet; spessartite has been found in a few places in the world, but the original German source is mined out, and I think the Nigerian material as well. I saw that huge tourmalinated quartz, and a rutilated quartz, and some (probable) London Blue topaz, which takes nearly two years to heat-treat to that deep color (hence in jewelry, you see more light blue and medium Swiss blue, which are less time-consuming/expensive to produce; JTV also had a very pale Glacier blue, which I think they used as a bargaining tool with their supplier, as in, 'Please make us some nice dark London Blue, and we'll also take a proprietary pale variety, to help offset the cost of tying up your kilns for two years"). You have plenty of your birthstone (peridot); JTV used to get really nice, clear, bright, large stones from China, and (usually somewhat smaller, perhaps a bit less yellow/more green) from Arizona. Some of the large pale yellow stones might be Mexican yellow labradorite---usually we might think of labradorite as blue/gray opague with a blue sheen, but these were clear, facetable, and a huge surprise when they tested out as labradorite. Gemstones are so interesting---I hope you learn a lot from this wonderful gift!

For settings, look up online for silver "snap settings," those are the easiest to set. I do Lapidary work when I can - use an 8" lap, facet semi-precious from .25" to about 2", on the avg. I have a few indexes. I like the cut stones Lisa gave you, for they were nice & clean, & colorful. "Tourmalinated Quartz" is what that one label said, which is tiny sticks of tourmaline, size of hairs, running through the quartz matrix! Nice Ametrine, looked like different shades of Topaz, running from Swiss blue to London Blue. Wondered if you had some white Sapphire or Moissanite. Garnets can also be green. Prasiolite, is green Amethyst. Some nice cabbed Lapis Lazuli, etc. You have a bang to a start of a collection, congrats!

Blue-gold stone. It has Cobalt & Manganese, instead of Colloidal copper, which makes the gold version. Just a slightly higher Manganese content, will give you a pretty purple color. You'll often find both blue & purple goldstone mixed on strands. I use a flashlight, to obtain more purple ones!

Wow, you received an amazing amount of amazing items! I just wanted to make a simple cord necklace with a cool looking metal pendant or charm to sell them in my $1 vending machine. And $300+ into so many different types of cords, chains, fillings, assorted charms and pendants, and all the different colored basic metals. It’s unbelievable how much it is to buy enough of a mixture for beginners. I’m so far over my head yet I can’t stop trying to make necklaces and watching to make wire wraps, different stones and all. It’s amazing watching you and others create such amazing work. I just get frustrated when it takes me so long to make a piece and feel like I can’t price it because I don’t have any silver or gold in it. Even though I’m using beads and pearls that are not cheap, and I don’t do anything acrylic. I’ve bought jars from goodwill and if I get an awesome necklace and there’s any plastic beads, I’ll take it apart and swap out the plastic.
