Don't believe the shed is large enough for a fur shed and if you were to put a stove in it, the doors would have to be open while it is in use. I'd be inclined to fix up the cabin, cut and peel logs, put in a good foundation and build a new cabin. Then turn the old cabin into that fur shed you want. A lot of work to be sure.

Happy new year kusk!! I must admit watching the content of you building a new cabin would be epic! And using the existing cabin as a skinning shack would give everyone more content of your skinning techniques. I see many upsides to you building a new cabin. Just the fact that you could use the existing cabin while you build the new one is a huge plus. Whatever you choose to do will benefit us! I’m so glad you’re increasing your content!

Regarding the cabin: If you are satisfied with the layout and design, then try to rebuild. However, considering that the walls, floor, ceiling, and more need repair. It might be better to just start over.

I’ll say that no matter your decision I’ll watch but from a logistical perspective and the shear amounts of labor involved, I think it’s smarter to build new. It’ll allow you to seal gaps and cracks, preventing bugs and air from easily passing back and forth. Easier to heat as you can insulate if you desire. Maybe getting a bigger saw mill type set up could help the reduce lumber costs. You may consider building on buried poles in the ground like you wood shed. Then insulate the space beneath with leaves and then the floor could attach to those poles. Lots of work either way. Sounds like lots of good content either way too. Enjoy the day👍👍

I’d go ahead and build the new cabin first. Your description of restoring the old cabin sounds like more work than just building the new one from scratch. Clean out everything and move into a new cabin, AND THEN convert the old one into the skinning shed. Leave the old wood burning stove in there and have a year round work shop that can be repaired as needed. As a skinning shed the smells will attract meddlesome predators you don’t want near the new cabin. Lots to consider, you asked for ideas and those can be like bodily openings, everybody has some. 😁

I suggest doing a bit of maintenance to the old cabin so it lasts a couple more years but start work on a new cabin that will last for a lifetime. If at possible figure out a way to have a solid foundation with a poured frost wall. If there is gravel nearby you can haul and rent or borrow a mixer to pour external walls. Then over the next couple years you cut logs to mill into lumber for a new cabin, no more log walls, no more rot, and no more heaving floors. Many people have portable band saw mills now so you could likely tow one in and cut on site or across the river. Over the course of a couple years, deals can be found on roofing and exterior wall board to keep the costs reasonable. All the best in 2025.

If you're going to spend enough time at the cabin to turn out 200 episodes each year, then you'll be needing a new cabin at some point. Patch up the old cabin so that it's good for another year or two while you get stuck into the new cabin. The old cabin might turn out to be a great skinning shed.

That was a nice talk, Kusk! You are wise to listen to the Lord, and allow him to direct you. You have a lot of skill with tools, plus imagination - so I personally feel building a new cabin would really make this channel shine. I have a 12 x 14 shed at our cottage that was built on the ground with the bottom sill plate rotted away. It was about 50 years old at the time. I ended up lifting the structure with timbers underneath each side and lifting with bottle jacks. I then built a square 12 x14 floor frame with 2x8 on top of concrete filled sonotubes dug in the ground (mixed in a wheel barrel) and put a plywood floor down and dropped the shed back down on it. Squared up the shed nice and more importantly got the structure off the ground and away from moisture. I’ve had no problems since. I would suggest doing what is best for you. You know what would work best with your situation.

Acknowledging God as first is without question the success to your life. Through God all things are possible. As far as possibilities go, to build new or restore is the question only you can answer to be honest. The goal is longevity as I understand it, keeping the old cabin is worthwhile as you could upgrade and live in it as you build a newer cabin for the future. Either way you go the journey will be incredible and maybe we'll be able to enjoy it with you. Thanks for the video and work, God bless and stay safe.

A new cabin build would allow you to take advantage of some advances in off grid tech (solar, batteries, composting toilets, etc) as well as foundation and insulation advances. Prep your logs this year, build in 2026. Refurbishment of existing cabin for guests or a better sized skinning shed sounds like a better longer term plans. Any plans for your bushcraft channel?

Depends on your time and money, if it were me I’d build a new cabin using rough cut lumber and conventional framed cabin. I’d rather spent my time in the bush than strip logs or remodel. Easy to mouse and fly proof. lol. Post and beam works to. What ever it takes to free up “time”. Log cabins look nice but Im for functionally.

Wow - its a big task with a new cabin - that would be terrific video series- but if you started a new build you could still use the old cabin as a base - seems ripping out floor and replacing ceiling and floors make current unusable for some time....I think effort on new build would be best and do the minimum to keep current cabin in use and comfertable. Can you get some help with the process - get the new logs mechanically strippped to save effort - I know its not you but would save heck of time - you can concentrate on the the other items whilst logs are drying out...good foundations and stuff to keep walls and floor off the ground. You could incorporate a little modern stuff as well as you say help up load video - solar panel to power internet.... whatever you decide will keep watching - thanks from Oxford,, England

Someone mentioned drawing a map of the cabin and traplines. Could be fun, maybe a good decoration for the cabin if carved out or done in other interesting way. If you don't consider that a risk of course, sharing it with us has always some danger to it. Happy trails

That would be interesting to draw up. My wife's a very talented artist. Perhaps she could come up with something. Happy new year!

Well either way its going to be lots of work. But ive done what your about to do and let me tell you fixing that old cabin is going to alot of work and you have lots to do already. With your age i would consentrat on building knew and eliminate the problems your old cabin had. Like a stipper slope on the roof for slow load and not building on the ground. For the work you have to do i would look into getting a sawmill you have lots of wood to work with your lucky. And then i would fix up the old cabin when you have time 👍
