Your musings of the 3 general zones of Florida got me thinking about Washington State. We have 4 basic zones, so in general make four somewhat equal north to south strips, west to east in the state. West to east, there is the Olympic peninsula and the Olympic mountain range, which from the top of the peninsula all the way through a good chunk of the Oregon coast is wet and rainy. The Olympics are a temperate rain forest. Then the second quarter is the Puget Sound, which is a strip of the state running from the Sound to the top of the Cascades. Rainy and wet, but not nearly as wet as the Olympics. These two zones are what gives people the idea that the state is wet and rainy, but that isn't entirely true. Then the state changes in a big way. From the top of the cascades to a point about midway from the cascades to the Idaho border is incredibly dry most of the year. Central Washington has desert plateau, and most of the land is a semi-arid desert. The last quarter of the state is basically also semi-arid, but huge chunks of it have sparse forest, and other parts have dry-land wheat farming. In the winter that last quarter boarding Idaho gets a lot of winter precipitation, mostly in the form of snow, and is often very cold, getting what we often call Canadian weather. Robert, I hope you are able to visit more of Washington farther north of the Columbia, not just visiting us when you are on the Columbia Gorge.

Greetings from the Calif Bay Area. Forget Santa Cruz Calif, it got hit very hard by the Dec 22 & Jan 23 Calif storms. The boardwalk damaged severely and beaches to the south, Capitola, damaged even worse. Enjoy your vids & music. My parents had a 15’ Shasta trailer in the 60’s we’d do beach camping in. Stop in Cayucos if your on the west coast. Calif’s best kept secret, (not now though !!! ) I’m 77 and we’ve been visiting there since the 60’s.

Hey Robert, happy Sunday (every year I'm reminded of the U2 lyric, "nothing changes on New Year's Day") Looking at your 2022 travel map I'm super impressed. I've been to many of those places but not as a single themed journey as you did. I drove the Natchez Trace this year too, but in the spring--it may not have the mind-blowing vistas of the west, but it has to be the most relaxing 400+ mile drive in the US. If the stars align maybe our travel paths will cross sometime this year and we can share some stories and an IPA. Happy trails!
