What today's holiday mean for lovers of the theatre arts, and the arts in general....
Due to Congress's extension of copyrights for works long after the the creators are alive to benefit from such protection, a huge amount of our culture remains off limits to artists...
However, a critical grant of access to our cultural heritage is granted with the passage of each year, as more works enter the Public Domain...
At midnight tonight, all works originally copyrighted in the year 1926 will enter the Public Domain in the United States. As of that moment, here are some works that performing artists will be free to use without paying insane royalties to the estates of creators who have been dead for nearly a hundred years. Which classic works would you like to take advantage of their wider availability? What plays would you like to see staged by your local community theatre without bankrupting their tiny budgets? What might you like to see performed freely in one of those virtual online performances that really took off when the theatres were all close for Covid (and that this channel loves to focus on)? What musical compositions would you like to use in your KZbin videos without a copyright claim, or in the sound design of a play you're putting on?
Happy Public Domain Day, and Happy New Year everybody!
