The cartoon that approximates this comic-book the most, is Spectacular Spider-Man from the mid-00's. A Great Cartoon, and keeps the Ditko/Romita vibe and characters. Def worth your time.

I don't know if you've discussed it on the channel before but from this same time period Marvel Ultimate Team Up had some really interesting artists on for one off issues. Along with stuff like Richard Corben on the Banner miniseries and Morrison/Jae Lee doing Fantastic Four 1234

It’s interesting to compare Cooke’s DC to his Marvel work. They feel different in a way I can’t quite put my finger on.

Always great to see more Darwyn Cooke under the hot lights! Looking forward to you breaking down some Parker which is a storytelling masterclass. I genuinely think he was the best comics storyteller of the 21st century.

The Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon from like 2007-09 had an art style similar to Cooke's. Its consider one of the better Spidey joints

So refreshing. Clean line work & flat colour versus pointless over-rendering and bad photoshop effects.

I can't agree more with you guys, there are some real hidden Marvel gems in the early 00's! Gonna find this one asap

whenever you hear "Darwyn", it ought to be "Darwyn & J.Bone" - the spidey issues were really collaborative.

This reminds me of the Jim Mahfood spidey stories and that everyone should check out the Spectacular Spiderman cartoon with designs by Sean Galloway. Great stuff.

Cooke is one of my favourite artist, definitely a source of inspiration, and I didn`t knew this book existed. Gotta find a copy ASAP, this is cartooning at it`s finest. BEAUTIFUL stuff! Thank you guys for showing this.

I found this meme post on a media that inspires the others, it reads: "J. Jonah Jameson: If you aren't happy single, you won't be happy taken. Happiness comes from *Pictures of Spider-Man*, not from relationships." Very inspiring ❤

I love this issue. It’s my favorite Darwyn Cooke story and I own three original pages. I believe Scott Morse regards Maurice Noble as his primary animation mentor.

The early aughts really were a great time for Marvel... and as for people not supporting this type of work, I remember working at a comic shop when the original issues of Cooke's New Frontier were coming out, and I don't think were selling more than 20 copies each! I would recommend it to the Wednesday Warriors and they would scoff in disgust! Anything like this was largely dismissed by the comic store regulars back then...

As someone that was really starting to dig into comics Tangled Web introduced me to a lot of creators I had never heard of. This issue open the door to Darwyn Cooke and was immediately hooked.

Darwyn Cooke was to develop a kids line for Marvel at that time. Apparently it fell through. He provided all of the artists and was somehow left out of the final product that eventually became Marvel Adventures. I remember him saying that due to this experience he would never work for Marvel again. Would be interesting to dig into that further. Was around the same time as that whole NYX debacle with David Choe. Would be interesting to dive into that.

Loved this spotlight on Cooke! Question though at 18:46 you mention Jim's not using the black line to create an older look. Can someone explain that further? Thanks!
@thetonycanepa2 жыл бұрын
To create the look of comics printed on newsprint, the black plate should not be be 100% opaque. The depth or opacity of the black should vary and the texture of the paper should come through it. This also allows other color plates to trap (overlap) the black for additional variation. I believe Jim developed this technique (or at least used it to great effect) on his book Afrodisiac.

I get the feeling that the irisless eyes comes from Iwao Takamoto, the character designer at Hanna-Barbera. If you check out Iwao Takamotos character designs, he always drew eyes as a circle without an iris. So I think that was Darwyn Cooke influenced by animation rather than comics at that point but then it works with this Not-Archie crossover with Spider-man because the style is super clear and cartoony.
