Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster is a post-apocalyptic role-playing video game originally developed by Atlus for the PlayStation 2. It was published by Atlus in Japan and North America, and by Ghostlight in Europe. It is the third entry in the Shin Megami Tensei series, the central series in the Megami Tensei franchise. Multiple versions of the game have been published: the original version was published in Japan by Atlus in 2003, while a director's cut was released in 2004 in Japan. The director's cut was localized and released in North America in 2004 as Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne and in Europe in 2005 as Shin Megami Tensei: Lucifer's Call. A high-definition remaster was released for the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 in Japan in 2020, and is planned for an international release in 2021 on those consoles and Microsoft Windows.

it did invent it but Pokemon is anything but the light version, it has more than SMT, more to catch, more to evolve, more moves, more storage capability, more plot, more characters in the game, more items. I'd love to have a more robust SMT mainline and I think SMT 5 will deliver

I found the battle system loop was not as fun as Nocturne Press Turn system with emphasize on buff, debuff with weakness explore with high risk/high reward rather than just a damage buff. Fusion mechanic made the system more robust compare to catching pokemon with different pokeballs. Also, the speed of the combat is way faster. Story of Pokemon game is not even Pokemon Adventure Manga of good at all. The fact that there is multiple ways to obtain demon rather than catch them all methods are way more engaging to me.

It's one of my favorites, too. A pity it's getting _Persona_-fied, judging by 4 and 4a and how the younger sentai-loving crew is taking over. But then, it's been a long time coming, judging by how long they've been fucking up Odin. (Hint: he's a _magic king_ who wields *ice*, physical brusier lightning wielder is THOR's schtick!)

This game is one of my favorite of all time. I've played only on PS2 though. I agree with the music thing being the best there and the battles. My fav song on it it's Amala labyrinth theme and Normal battle in amala. Both are haunting great memorable songs.

It's much harder than IV is (after you get into Tokyo in IV, anyway). A couple tips: - Use a build guide, as you can't relearn skills on the Demifiend after you overwrite a skill on him. - If you want the True Demon Ending, _especially_ use that guide for a physical build, as otherwise a certain boss is impossible... at least on higher difficulties, not sure about normal.

I cant believe that of the two tracks yall picked as your favorite neither one had any organ. The organ/electric guitar combo really set this soundtrack apart from many others. When i bought this for ps2 it came with a soundtrack cd and I would regularly blast it in my car.

I played and finished the game almost 1 week ago and I feel so empty ... I never expected that I would love the game so much althought it's not my first SMT game that I play. It's clearly one of the best games I have ever played and it's a must have in everyones collection. Damn I miss SMT Nocturne so much.

After playing (and loving) SMT 5, i finally tried 3 Nocturne - expecting it to be equally awesome in its own way. After beating Forneus however, I cannot force myself to continue. The absolute lack of ANY quality of life features, coupled with some very archaic design choices, was infuriating me to the point of quitting it after roughly 2 hours. 50 Euros down the drain. Let me elaborate: - (frequent) random encounters - unable to rearrange/sort my demon's skills - unable to see remaining enemy health - unable to view enemy affinities (even after discovering them) - unable to track buffs/debuffs - unable to recall to a save room - unable to teleport between save rooms

And SMT Strange Journey + SMT IV fixed all of those problems. Except random encounters in SJ. Nocturne still is not THAT outdated like SMT 1 & SMT 2 from SNES.

@@silverfox274 IV is f****** amazing!! I was scared of the difficulty at first too, but when you get the hang of it the game is not that hard. After you fight the 2 big bosses in Naraku (those are really tough) you'll just have to grind like you would normally do in an RPG. And beyond that part I only had problems with some of the later bosses, but not all of them are obligatory (I just wanted to finish all the quests). These guys will make you use certain strategies, which will demand specific demons in your party. I will warn you though, never take a battle lightly because with the smirk system things may go from 0 to 100 in a heartbeat. Especially in the beginning hours, when you don't have a variety of demons enough to counter everything. SMTIV it's a perfect way to get into the main series, and it made me enjoy it more than I did Persona. After it I played all of the ones available on the 3DS, Nocturne and now I'm going to try SMT and SMTII.

I played through SMT Nocturne and DDS side by side around the time they first came out, having never heard of the franchise before and just looking for a way to keep myself entertained as a single barracks dwelling soldier at the time. I quickly became obsessed with the tone and depth of the world. It was definitely barren, but I thought that added to the charm. I came to love Nocturne and DDS so much that I went back and played through the entire catalogue up to that point and eventually hopped on the persona train too. This series and this game is godlike.

You mentioning the possibility of getting a remaster of the :Digital Devil Saga" duology on modern consoles has sold me more on a game I was already going to get. (I still have haunting memories of going to the last Gamestop in my county that had a copy of those games back in the mid 2000's to get them, only to be told as soon as I asked for them, "Sorry, but someone literally beat you to them seconds ago, and they just drove away as you got here." The devastation I felt in that moment will never leave me.)

SMT became one of my favourite series of all-time and easily my favourite RPG series. Persona's great, but there's something more substantial and thematically interesting about the SMT titles to me. I mean when you think about how the demons are tied to real-world mythology and folklore, or how certain world philosophies are represented, and the different ending paths - definitely one of the most interesting parts of SMT 3. Beat it a couple times on PS2 and that True Demon Ending never gets old! Nothing like struggling through to fuse Beelzebub for the final boss. Because why not. But honestly it's the battle style that gets me most; Pokémon's Super Effect = more damage is great, but the way you get an extra turn here feels more rewarding and strategically interesting? Unless Mot spams Beast Eye, but hey...

But every once in a while I see news of new patches and I think I might get into them at some point soon. In particular Megami Tensei II, which just looks insane for NES/Fami. Love the physical carts for them both though, came with really cool booklets and stickers.

If you want a turn based rpg with some quirks, you can start with Nocturne. If you can handle first person turn based rpg, I recommend you to play SMT Strange Journey and Devil Summoners: Soul Hackers for maximum enjoyment. If you want to enjoy hybrid of third person map with first person combat, go with SMT IV and IV Apocalypse. Be mindful that all of these games will punish you hard if you let your guard down even a bit. Oh yeah, like DQ, you can collect the demons too, or not, you must recruit them as your allies.

SJ Redux was my first MegaTen game. I loved it! I grabbed this game and most of the rest of the series after beating that game. Hopefully the series picks up in the USA before too long as the games are both fun and challenging. Maybe add Demi-Fiend, Space Marine, or Flynn into Smash to boost popularity? Haven't played much Persona (besides Innocent Sin) as I don't really do well in social sim games.

The horn on his neck is supposed to represent the Kagutsuchi they used on him to make him into a demi-fiend. Also, funnily enough Pokemon is a kiddy version of SMT, it predates it and they basically "ripped" it off so it's the other way around.

I remember getting this game and being really intrigued with the dark tone and heavy metal soundtrack. I never could get past one part though so I stopped. It is very grindy as well. Also very different from the final fantasy mechanics that I am used to.

Strange Journey is part of what people call nowadays wrongly "mainline." It was going to be SMT 4 at one point, no it's just one of seven Shin Megami Tensei games: 1, 2, 3, If..., 4, Strange Journey, and Apocalyse. What people call mainline is actually SMT, everything else is one of the Megami Tensei series, collectively called MegaTen.

Advice to new players: the first major challenge is to get dekaja (null enemy buffs) before the Matador fight. Prepare to grind for that.

Thank you so much HappyConsoleGamer for review SMT3 Nocturne HD Remaster. I really want to play this game because I missed out a lot on the SMT mainline series and would like to get in to it. I've played Pokemon which was inspired by SMT and the SMT spinoff Persona series so to play those two JRPGs and not play what you could essentially call the godfather of JRPGs is a big mistake on my part and I hope to get the game next week for the Switch.

I remember the constant random encounter was monstrous and nearly killed the experience for me, few steps random battle, few steps random battle, also after each battle, what was I doing or where was I going?

Turning the difficulty to easy in this remaster greatly lessens the encounter rate (or so I've heard). Useful when the random encounters start to annoy you and you just want to continue the story.

Hope this sells well. Any sort of success Atlus titles have on the Switch means a tiny bit more probable that Persona 5 will release on the Switch too! 😢

On a console that had an absolute metric shit ton of great RPGs (and great games in general), Nocturne is probably my favorite RPG on the PS2.

Got a lot of SMT games and only SMT 3 Nocturne (Lucifer's call here in Europe) got me hooked. I think I should give those other SMT game a second try after I'll complete Persona 5 Strikers.

About the lyrics in the battle themes somebody was able to find out what the vocals were saying :D Also im with Kim, ever since i heard the boss theme i was like "FUCK YEAH". Never played the game but heard some of the music waaay back from Blue Laguna when it existed :) My daily video game side for getting OSTs xD
