The red bug with spots is a Spotted Lantern Fly. An invasive species from Asia that has been spreading around the eastern US. Last summer they were found in Ohio for the first time. They suck the sap out of the leaves of trees, which steals nutrients, stresses the tree, and can eventually kill it. I really enjoy your videos, especially this budget hike series. Hopefully it inspires folks who are hesitant to backpack because of the price of some of the gear.

Love the fact you notice those special nature moments and include them. Most people who do this just focus on the miles and doom and gloom. Great you have learnt what's important

What an adventure! Exciting trail, a little bit of rock climbing, plus a bear and a couple rattlesnakes! You handled it like a BOSS! Great job hiking, getting it on video, and staying alive!

That little pond on the AT is about an hour from my house. I've stayed there a few times. That water is absolutely frigid but its a beautiful spot

Good video. The bear was worrisome. PA is notorious for its rattlers. When I car camped cross country in 1973 and 1975, I used a 35mm camera to record what I could. Film and developing was expensive in those days so I didn't take as many pics as I should have. In those days you could mail your film to a developer(prepaid). I had them always do two prints and they were sent to my Mom so that she coud see where I'd been, two weeks before. Happy Trails. Good Luck, Rick

You guys are doing great! Here I am still planning a May 1 start next year, despite the anticipated frequent high temps. I’m much better at managing my body in the heat than in the cold and wet.

So proud of you!! Hiking in that heat it’s so hard, plus documenting it and trying your watch your budget. I haven’t seen any mushrooms lately… and next time you see that bug, kill it!! Byte.. the snakes and the momma bear with her cubs- whew!! That and dogs are what scare me the most, while hiking with my 2 pups. Stay safe!!

Ah man I know that swimming hole at the dam. We camped there on our AT thru last year and also took an impromptu zero. That water is COLD hahaha literally sucked my breath out. Also, I forgot about that crazy manifesto under the bridge. Its funny, we didnt see any bears until around this area in PA too, didnt see any after either.

I live about 30 mins from Lehigh gap and I love taking my friends from out of town up there! It’s an amazing short hike, but I can imagine how hard it is with a pack

In Norway, we have a whole national park that is only those rocks. Its called Rondane, and its where I started to hike. Needless to say, I am pretty comfortable with rocky parts.

i totally ran into half pint in mt rodgers/grayson highlands earlier this year...it was really shit weather, glad she continued the trek!

I ran into a young man on the Long Trail and he too used an old film camera. His trail name was analog. Going old school. Back in the day I used to fix production film equipment. I don’t even know where you would bring film to be developed today. Maybe she does it herself. You’re making good time. I will admit I have a fear of rattlesnakes mostly because of my dog. If I make another return to the AT I think it will be in the winter. I can’t take a risk with my dog. Take care

Love this series! My expectation when hiking in Penn in summer is ... I'm gonna get lyme disease. random path through difficult rocks, and straight up fall line of steeps = British columbia trail design

I spent a summer internship in Pittsburgh and went hiking/ backpacking every week. Was always afraid of Lyme but never got it. I did Allegheny national forest, McConnell mill state park, Ohio Pyle and some more I can’t remember. Throw that permethrin on and enjoy!

That's the trouble with bears on a populated trail. They just aren't afraid. In Wisconsin, they're gone like shot. I've only come across one bear that basically ignored me.

PA is bad for rattlesnakes I about stepped on one right past the beaver dam, they are thick there. Keep on skinning it back 😊

I have had the same thought about the rock piles! Why!!??!? Sure if you must, give a dry weather “challenge” route for those that want it and have a sane bad weather route like they have in atleast one place on the southern part if the trail. Thought the same thing in the whites hiking up and down waterfalls last week, but validating to hear someone who is younger and in way better shape have the same thought 😅

Nice thing about the Rattle Snakes , you leave them alone they leave you alone. They are some of the best rodent , population , controllers out there.

For those who do not feel safe climbing the rocks in Lehigh Gap there is a blue blaze trail that switchbacks. Noone will know, I won't tell. The "spiny ridge" is not for everyone and its ridiculous to feel you have to risk your life for a hike. I've climbed those rocks with no pack and its no joke. Same with knife's edge, I've hiked it and while to me not as dicey as Lehigh Gap, still a challenge. Hike your own hike and don't feel you have to be a purist if it isn't safe. And if you stop in Palmerton, Tony's pizza is the best. And no, I don't work for them. Just a fact.
