Our Salmon Faverolles are almost like dogs-talks to you, follows you everywhere. have also found they are super curious, and pretty smarty-one day forgot to open pop door to run/nesting box and big coop door had blown shut-she couldn't get in to lay her egg-raised a ruckus and when we took too long to investigate came and raised a bigger ruckus at back door and pecked door-when I went out she ran to coop! smart girl knew she needed her human!

It’s interesting hearing other peoples experience with different breeds. Our Easter Eggers are not a bit flighty at all and lay nearly daily. I’ve heard other folks say Rhode Island Reds are aggressive but we had a flock that were as friendly as could be. The one consistency seems to be Speckled Sussex. Always friendly and relaxed which has been our experience as well.
@HappyWifeAcres

Absolutely! We've found that EEs seem to get friendlier with age. And so many say RIRs are aggressive, but we've had several roosters who have all been sweethearts!
@CFarnwide

@@HappyWifeAcres I’ve wondered if localities could affect breed traits? Most of the aggressive RIR I’ve heard of are from the East coast. Here in the west they all seem to be very docile. I don’t know, I just find it interesting 😎

My Easter Egger is a good layer, but so flighty! I had six, one of the six was extremely smart and friendly. She figured out if I was working in the yard I would uncover bugs, and she would come running and stay right there all day. She was very flashy colored with a great crest. I named her Trumpy.

Thanks for that. Good idea. For now, I’ll describe what we did. We physically picked up the every bird to look them over. Some got sprayed with an animal friendly mite spray. We separated out “old hens” for processing a few days later. Roosters got spurs removed (and the hen too!). We checked for foot infections. We removed poop stuck to butts or feathers. Each one got counted. With help, it took about 4 hours for 325 birds.

I found the best way to tame the flighty ones is remember why they that way it is simply fear, just sit with them feed them just hang out with them over time they will initiate contact with you. never force a interaction, that just scares them more. my hamburg I had no idea how to tame so I didnt try,now she is way more trusting of me, and sometimes jumps onto my shoulder and looks me in the eye. she is so cute. my others are the same the more you interact but dont force it the tamer they become.
@bradpayn8058
@bradpayn8058 3 жыл бұрын
Yet flighty birds will still be flighty. It's not that you can't tame a Leghorn or Easter egger just as you've said, I've done it too, it just takes more of what you said and for longer with certain flighty breeds. You can tame a wild Pheasant or a cottontail if you spend enough time with them, but they'd still be flighty as compared to something like a puppy. Then you have to consider the value of your time, and how much time you have to convert your most flighty egg producers into pets or how much time you could have saved if you wanted pets by just starting with Orppingtons or Australorps
@motogem1408
@motogem1408 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with you! I have 2 Easter Eggers and they are so sweet! One is certainly the top of the pecking order and layed her first egg at 4mo. She is very smart as well as my other Egger. I also have 2 silver laced Wyandotte's which one is flighty and the other will jump on your shoulder whether you are ready for her or not. The one that is very friendly is another one who started laying 2 weeks after my egger at 4mo. Then I ended up getting one Rhode Island and a black sex link/ black Star. They are 2 weeks younger then the other 4. They are both flighty and stick together. But everyone of my girls follow me everywhere I go. They even try to run in the house with our dogs. I watched one of my wyandotte's running back and forth with my dog(doberman pinscher). So I think every chicken is different and it absolutely helps when you sit with them and have a little time to hang out with them.

It depends on the hatchery line you have for the general bird temperaments. My Easter Eggers have always come from Townline Hatchery, have not been flighty, have the most curiosity and personality, are not bullies, lay 5 or 6 eggs a week from February through November, rarely go broody and molt fast. My Wyandottes have never been flighty and are always friendly. They are poor summer layers, but phenomenal winter layers.

The solution in the bottle is a Permethrin solution. We use it to control mites and other parasites. Permethrin is commonly used on farms and can be ordered online or found in farm stores. Chickens regulate their temperature when their feathers are dry. Wet feathers trap heat and will kill your chickens in hot weather. The Permethrin spray evaporated quickly and it was a cool spring day. We use fans in hot weather, and make sure there's plenty of shade and placed to dust bathe. Definitely don't wet down your chickens!

Congratulations on your show-quality chickens. We raise chickens for completely different reasons: eggs and meat. The majority of our followers do the same. We attend the annual Ohio National Poultry Show because we love seeing all the different poultry. We wouldn't know the first thing about how to show a chicken. We don't control breeding and we let our chickens roam where ever they want to go. The intent of the video was to show people different chickens and talk about general qualities of temperament, color, egg quantity, eggs size, egg color, and bird size.

@Happy Wife Acres I'm sorry. I'm not trying to be rude .I had buff Orpington chicken and Rhode Island red , even brown leghorns and other breeds of poultry hatchery mills. Even president of Murray McMurray's hatchery, none of the so-call dual propuse chicken breeds are not a good meat birds .Also look up exhibition Rhode Island red from Cackle hatchery has poor quality Rhode Island poor quality birds. Look up Sustainable Poultry Network KZbin videos and Responsible Poultry breeding . Even APA judge Jim Atkins say poultry hatchery birds are not really good dual propuse chicken breeds. I butchered some so-call dual propuse chicken breeds. Not again, I finally found exhibition buff Orpington chicken and exhibition Mottled java chicken breed for my small homestead. Only thing poultry hatchery birds are good for laying eggs, and you barely get good 2 yrs eggs production. I had 9 yrs old Silver Sussex hens laid eggs for my family. Every other day . I been raising poultry since I was 5 years old. I'm 55 yrs old. I had a guy in middle Tennessee use someone's else's exhibition Rhode Island red for hatching eggs. I had sent me real a real pictures of his Rhode Island Reds. They were poultry hatchery birds .

No doubt that a lot of quality of lost in the mass production of backyard chicks. But our humble little farm appeals to backyarders getting started and raising food for their family. We teach the full life cycle from hatching to processing. We don't raise chickens specifically for meat, but because of our education programs, we hatch hundreds of chicks each year, so we have to eliminate the roosters and old hens. And that helps pay for their feed and lets us teach. We admire the people like yourself that meticulously work to get stronger lines of chicken breeds. By the way, you were right; that was a Wellsummer. We watched the video again from 2 years ago. We had both at the time and I just didn't notice the earlobe.

Why spray them?
@HappyWifeAcres

Some of the chickens get scaley leg mites, which get under their leg scales. This happens more as chickens age, sort of like us humans have a harder time fighting off illnesses. We spray them with a permethrin solution to kill mites and other parasites. We spray throughout the year as necessary, but during health check day in the spring, everyone gets inspected and treated.
