It's not super difficult really, just time consuming. You have to careful and know the schematics for your engine so you can find the easiest way to disconnect everything. Honda's and Toyota's are generally designed as "an engineers car" because the frequency of maintenance intervals regulated by the Japanese government, everything is designed to be well built but also relatively easy to service. The engine bay tends to be smaller on an Asian import vehicle (skipping Hyundai and Kia, both with quality and longevity issues) but almost everything else about them is better designed for servicing than a European vehicle. I HATE how Ford builds their cars nowadays. Chevy is almost always known for being the cheap man's cop out when it comes to ride and vehicle quality, and nothing will convince me that both manufacturer's don't place their O2 sensors in weird and tiny (read: almost impossible to reach) places for no good reason. (i.e Engineering students who have rarely had to take apart their own cars from top to bottom BEFORE they've ever had to design a new vehicle for the masses.) If you want your mechanic to stop hating you, don't get one. Or maybe DO. That's probably how they stay in business.

Brovo nice job! black bolt for tq was to be installed and "torqued" first; and there is a second coolant bleed valve on top of thermostat housing. But im impressed it was done with a few jacks and jack stands!

Following this now for my ‘09 Highlander. This has been a huge help, thanks! Interesting difference.... I don’t have an oil light on the cluster but a low warning light in the center stack. No big deal, I’ll hook up a gauge to prime it. Also, if I remove the IGN and Fuel pump relay, It won’t do anything. Do you have keyless start on yours? I had to reinstall the IGN relay to get it turn over. Just an FYI for anyone else. I originally had the factory oil cooler which I didn’t swap over. If anyone is looking for that complete setup or Avalon wiring harness just hit me up.

Nope, there was no keyless start on mine so that may have something to do with it. Pulling the fuel pump relay should be enough. Hope it works out for you!

In the future I think it would be cool to see a prius C made into a hot hatch by swapping a sienna hybrid drive train. In a car that's a ton lighter I bet the prius C would at least run high 5s to low 6s in 0-60.

Thank you for both great videos, you present such a wonderful chuck of knowledge between both of them. Could you estimate approx how much time it took to break down the engine and pull it out and then how much time to reinstall the new RAV4 engine? Why would put a RAV4 engine instead of getting the exact engine for the vehicle? It was amazing how you were able to lift that Sienna that high to pull out the engine. Good tip for the radiator refills with the breather valve. But did you know that there is a proper way to fully bleed the radiator/heater system to remove all air bubbles? I didn’t but found a very helpful video about how to do it, look for “The car care nut” here on YT, a Master Toyota Technician named AMD. Last question if you don’t mind, without taking out the engine would it be possible to replace the cam cover gasket and spark plug valve seals on the back of the engine? Thank you very much!

Great Vid! I want to know what your opinion is of putting the 07-10 2GR-FE engine into a 04-06 3MZ-FE equipped Sienna (I have the 2005 XLE model). It appears that the transmission is that same, right? Would the exhaust, fuel, coolant, wiring, etc mate up? Would this be possible but a lot of work, like making adapter wire harnesses, aftermarket exhaust etc. Thanks

when you uncouple the tranny from the engine, the torque converter will remain attached to the flex plate; then you will be able to remove all the converter bolts and the converter itself

I have a 2004 sienna that has no rust at all but needs a new engine it has the 3.3L V6 ENGINE 3MZ-FE and I have one Toyota Solara that’s has the same engine with only 25000 miles, I can’t find any information on what needs to be transfer over, do you know what different between those two cars when it comes to engine swap?

While I can't say for certain what needs to be transferred over, the general rule of thumb when manufacturers use the same engine, is to swap the long block and reuse all of the accessories - engine mounts, fuel lines, AC compressor, PS pump, exhaust manifold, etc. What I like to do is to go to rockauto.com, look at various parts for the year of the car and when clicking on the part number, they list all of the makes and models that the part is compatible with. If both cars are on the list then its most likely good to go.

I like this question because it comes up a lot and the bottom line is that it's not as simple as replacing a computer and tune. You will need to swap the engine and engine harness, computer, transmission, transmission computer, axles, and potentially the sub-frame. I'm sure there are more parts but in the end it will be too expensive.

I get this question a lot on different videos and its hard to answer since I film the video and that adds to the time. I spent 3 weeks working evenings to get this completed. I'd estimate around 35 - 45 hours of wrenching.

Looks like both use the 2GR-FE engine so I would say yes. You will probably have to reuse the sienna engine mounts, fuel line, and I'm sure other items.

It’s not so bad to do. You just need something to push the fluid into the transmission like a hand pump. Also you need a tool to read the transmission temp. You drain the oil with the car running at a certain temperature range. You can trick the car into telling you when the temp is in range by jumping your OBD port. There is a video of Tundra users that do this. Can confirm it works on 3G Sienna.

I start by looking at online dealer parts websites and compare part numbers for major engine components. In your case, the 2008 and 2014 3.5 engine has the same short block, same cylinder heads, etc. Then I move on to eBay and compare photos of the two engines. Again, in your case, looks like there are 2007 - 2011 engines and 2012 - 2015 engines. The most obvious difference seems to be in the wire harness (which you will need to swap). Keep in mind this was a quick look but I think the 2014 will work with minimal part swapping. Note: the AWD and RWD 3.5 engines have different oil pan setups, so watch out for that. The engine in the video was listed as not compatible but in reality it was the same engine but needed a few parts swapped over (harness, fuel tube, and engine mount).

+427 Elevating Productions There were a couple of problems - it had a huge oil leak at the timing cover which requires the engine to be removed and cover resealed. It was also knocking very loudly. Decided to just replace the engine.

oh okay we got a 137000 on a 2009 sienna with a 3.5 only knocking tapping it does is the piston slap or whatever you prefer to call it that Toyota assures is normal no oil leaks so far that I am aware of.
